How to use a paint spray gun: cup, distance, clean

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on the patio with a tin of fence stain and a mains spray gun. The usual failures are thick paint, a first spit on the timber, and a nozzle left wet overnight. How to use a paint spray gun is that sequence: time the cup, try the distance on card, then clean before the coating skins. The twelve-row table is the [paint spray gun comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-spray-gun), with GBP prices from amazon.co.uk. Peter F. did not spray these guns. Limits come from Wagner’s UK guides and listings captured on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase through those links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Thin with the cup, not by eye

You thin against a timed cup, because a puddle in the tin does not tell you whether the nozzle will atomise it. DIN seconds are the time a sample takes to empty a 4 mm DIN 53211 cup. A higher number means a thicker liquid. Wagner’s UK page for the W 100 stops at 90 DIN-seconds and excludes wall paint without the Perfect Spray logo, plus flammable materials. Stir, strain, fill the cup and time the stream until it breaks. If the time is slower than your gun’s maximum, thin only with the liquid the tin names. A 25–40 second target from a US blog is not a Wagner UK limit. Spray the mix on cardboard first. Which tins a fence will accept is on the paint spray gun for fences page.

Distance, fan and the first burst

On Wagner’s UK fence project the gap is about 15 cm. You are already moving when you pull the trigger, you release it before you turn, and the coats run top to bottom then left to right. That figure is for Wagner’s wooden fence. Your manual can differ, and wind throws the fan further. If the card looks dusty, move in slightly or open the flow. Set the air cap so the fan lies across your stroke. A horizontal fan suits a post, a vertical fan a rail, and a round pattern a bolt or a cut end. For overhead work, align the riser so the pickup still reaches the paint. The first second often spits, so aim at cardboard until the spray settles, then move onto the timber with the trigger already open.

Duty limits and the wrong class

DEKO’s warning is a duty limit: both saved DEKO guns say 20 minutes maximum continuous, then a cool-down, and a long terrace is several short spells. If the motor smokes or will not switch off, unplug it. A clog from unthinned paint is a different fault. These steps are for an electric gun. The compressor-fed BENTOHKLE still needs about 3.0–3.9 cfm at 2.0–3.5 bar before they apply. Where a fan gun is the wrong class is on the HVLP paint spray gun vs airless page.

Clean the same day

Clean as soon as you finish, before the coating skins in the nozzle. Wagner’s UK cleaning guide uses warm water and a little washing-up liquid for water-based paint, and the tin’s solvent for solvent-based paint. Those cleaners do not share a session. Empty the cup, flush the paint-carrying parts, and spray into a bucket until the stream runs clear. Leave the turbine out of the liquid. YFFU says clean within 15 minutes and test with water first. TOPALL and Kynjet say immediately. The DEKO 20-minute figure is a motor rest, not a cleaning deadline. Two-pack isocyanate is outside a weekend garage. HSE guidance MR2 calls for a booth and air-fed respiratory protection with an assigned protection factor of at least 20. Call a sprayer in for that coating, for a whole flat of emulsion, and when a mains gun smokes or will not switch off.

Common questions

How do I use the viscosity cup?
Stir, strain, fill the cup from the box, and time the stream until it breaks. Match that time to the maximum for your gun. Wagner’s UK page for the W 100 stops at 90 DIN-seconds. A 25–40 second figure from a US blog is not that limit. If the flow is slower, thin with the liquid the tin names and time the cup again.
How far should the gun be from the fence?
Wagner’s UK fence project uses about 15 cm. Move before you pull the trigger, and release it before you turn. That gap is for a wooden fence, so your manual can differ, and wind carries the fan further. Try it on cardboard before a panel. If the card looks dusty, move in slightly or open the flow.
Which way do I set the spray fan?
Set the air cap so the fan lies across your stroke. A horizontal fan suits a pass up and down a post. A vertical fan suits a sideways pass along a rail. A round pattern suits a bolt or a cut end. Wagner’s fence project still wants a cross-coat, top to bottom and then left to right. For overhead work, align the riser so the pickup tube still reaches the paint.
When do I clean the sprayer, and with what?
Clean as soon as you finish. Wagner’s UK guide uses warm water and a little washing-up liquid for water-based paint, and the tin’s solvent for solvent-based paint. Keep those cleaners apart, and keep the turbine out of the bucket. YFFU says within 15 minutes. TOPALL and Kynjet say immediately. Paint left in the nozzle overnight still blocks the gun.
Why does the first second of spray spit?
The first second often throws a blob before the fan settles. Aim at cardboard until the spray evens out, then move onto the panel with the trigger already open. Starting the trigger over the wood puts that blob on the board. Grit and paint above the gun’s DIN-second limit make the next pass worse. Wagner’s fence project starts the arm moving before the trigger and releases it before the turn.
