Paint spray gun for fences: sprayable tins and wind

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are looking at garden panels, a shed, or decking, and at a tin that went on with a brush last year. A paint spray gun for fences is worth filling only when that tin is allowed in a sprayer, the air is still, and the pot lasts longer than a few boards. This page is that check before you fill the pot. Peter F. wrote it on 21 October 2026 from maker pages and amazon.co.uk listings, without a lab spray test. The twelve listings are ranked on the [paint spray gun comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-spray-gun). Prices here are captured shelf prices. Sprayable tins and the ones to leave in the shed

The tin decides before you switch the motor on. Ronseal’s FAQ says standard Fence Life must not go in a sprayer, because it can clog and damage the gun. Sprayable Fence Life or Fence Life Plus is the maker’s alternative, and you still match it to the gun’s viscosity limit. A review of the ordinary tin does not overrule that. Cuprinol writes Garden Shades spraying for its own sprayer: dry weather, above 5°C, surfaces covered, and wet overspray wiped with water and household detergent. That does not clear Garden Shades for every electric gun here. One Coat Sprayable is a different tin, at about 15–30 cm, and only in still air. These sources do not show a spray approval for Ducksback. Gritted anti-slip decking paint clogged the Wagner fence gun until it was cleared, so brush that tin. Thinner the instructions require still counts toward the VOC limit for that wood coating. Thinning for a permitted tin is on how to use a paint spray gun.

Wind, shield and distance

Wind matters as much as the motor. Makers treat a breezy day as a mistake, because mist travels further than a brush flick. Plants, patio slabs and next door’s washing are the usual victims. Wait for a still, dry spell. Cuprinol’s Garden Shades note also wants the air above 5°C. Wagner’s UK wooden-fence project uses a cardboard shield, works at about 15 cm, and asks for a cross-coat. Cuprinol’s distance for One Coat Sprayable is about 15–30 cm, and only for that product, so keep the two figures separate. Too close and you flood the board edge. Too far and the mist leaves the timber. Shield a uPVC sill, the shed window and the boundary post. Wet water-based overspray wipes off with water and household detergent. Dried mist on a sill means scraping.

Cup size on a panel run

A calm day still stalls when you refill every few boards. In this batch, 600–800 ml means more stops, and 1200–1400 ml is heavier while you hold the motor. Reviews of the Tilswall Alien 500 treat its 600 ml pot as a short run, at about £39.99 with 4.4 from 28 reviews. A shed door and two panels suit that cup. Wagner Fence & Decking puts the motor on the ground: about £60, 1400 ml and a 1.8 m hose. NEU MASTER holds 1200 ml in the hand at about £31.89. YFFU holds 1300 ml on a 1.8 m hose, with 5.0 from 13 reviews. Read 0.4 kg as the hand piece and 2.7 kg as the item. Who leads that shortlist is on best paint spray gun.

A car spray gun is not a fence gun

The LVLP car gun needs about 3.0–3.9 cfm, so it belongs with a compressor you already own. Without that air it will not coat a panel run. Use a mains gun made for fence panels, and only after the tin says spray.

Common questions

Can I put standard Ronseal Fence Life in the gun?
No. Ronseal’s FAQ says standard Fence Life must not go in a sprayer, because it can clog and damage the gun. A review does not cancel that. Sprayable Fence Life or Fence Life Plus is the maker’s alternative, and you still follow that tin’s viscosity note. If yours is the brush version, brush it or replace it.
Can I spray Cuprinol Garden Shades or Ducksback?
Garden Shades has spray instructions for a Cuprinol sprayer: dry weather, above 5°C, cover nearby surfaces, and wipe wet overspray with water and household detergent. That does not clear it for every electric gun in this batch. One Coat Sprayable is a separate product, at about 15–30 cm, and it asks for still air. These sources show no spray approval for Ducksback. If the label does not say spray, use a brush.
Is a hose gun better than a handheld for a long run?
On a long boundary, a hose gun keeps the motor off your hand. Wagner Fence & Decking pairs 1400 ml with a 1.8 m hose. YFFU pairs 1300 ml with a 1.8 m hose. The light hand-piece claim is separate from the 2.7 kg item. A 1200 ml handheld cuts refills, and your wrist still carries the pot. For a shed and two panels, the handheld is enough if you accept the stops.
Can I spray decking paint with anti-slip grit?
Expect a clog when the tin contains anti-slip grit. That kind of decking paint blocked the Wagner fence gun until it was cleared. The grit belongs in the film, and a nozzle is a poor place for it. Brush gritted deck coatings. A smooth decking stain still has to be allowed on the label, on a still day, with the house wall masked.
What should I shield, and is a car spray gun a fence gun?
Shield plants, the neighbour’s side, windows, and paving you want to keep clean. Wagner’s UK fence project uses cardboard, about 15 cm, and a cross-coat. Wet water-based overspray wipes off with water and detergent. Dried mist on a sill stays put. The LVLP car gun here needs a compressor at about 3.0–3.9 cfm. Without that air, use a mains gun made for fence panels.
