Non-contact voltage tester for 12 V

Updated: 22 October 2026

Non-contact voltage tester 12 V, on these listings, is an alternating-current window. A car’s 12 V system is mostly direct current, so a silent pen on that loom is the miss you should expect, not proof the wire is dead. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, wrote this on 22 October 2026 from the amazon.co.uk listings and public UK notes on doorbell transformers. It is not a lab test. The table is on the [non-contact voltage tester comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/non-contact-voltage-tester). A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Read AC before you read 12.

What the 12 V line is claiming

Five pens state 12–1000 V AC and 48–1000 V AC: Aicevoos at £7.99, MUFASHA at £8.99, VENLAB at £9.99, YOWEXA at £9.99, and Kaiweets, titled HT100 with model HT101, at £10.99. The lower window is the more sensitive AC claim. It is not a DC range. BSIDE at £13.99 states 12–1000 V with a dial. C.K starts at 70 V. Yukesaky, Kioylmo, and Astraveo start at about 90 V AC. A Volt Stick 230Y, outside this comparison, starts at 200 V AC. A DC battery has no 50 Hz field for this pen to sense. YOWEXA writes the range as AC, and reviews both claim and deny 12 V, including an AC-only note.

Cars, campers, and DC

A car battery, a camper leisure battery, and most accessory looms are DC. Silence on a 12 V DC fuse is the expected miss, not proof the wire is dead, and not a reason to short a stud. YOWEXA reviews say the pen is no use on a car and that 12–14 V failed while 240 V worked. Kaiweets reviews say vehicle readings were harder than mains. MUFASHA lit on wood, metal, and fabric in a camper try. Use a contact meter on the conductor and the return the diagram names. The 230 V side of a hook-up can still be a first look. Mains features are on the buying guide.

Doorbells and other small AC

A UK chime guide describes transformers at 8 V, 12 V, and 24 V AC. That is the guide’s account, not a measurement we made. Arlo’s UK help says to measure with a multimeter on AC. Eight volts AC sits under both windows these pens print. A 24 V AC transformer is above 12 and below 48, so only the sensitive window even claims it. A pen from 70 V or 90 V ignores all three. Read the transformer label if you need the number. Silence does not mean the transformer is dead. On the 230 V primary, the pen may say it looks live, and it may not prove it dead.

The mains job that is still in range

UK mains at 50 Hz sit inside every window here. A house socket or a 230 V hook-up is the job the reviews support. Do not buy a dual-range pen because the number 12 is in the title and you own a car. Alarm it on a known live socket first. That order is how to use a non-contact voltage tester. Leave it in the drawer for DC, for an 8 V AC transformer, or when you need a number rather than a beep. A silent tip on a battery cable is not a safe cable.

Common questions

Will a 12–1000 V pen see a car battery?
Not as a 12 V DC source. The window on Aicevoos, MUFASHA, VENLAB, YOWEXA, Kaiweets, and the BSIDE AVD06 is an AC claim. A car battery and most vehicle accessory wiring are DC, so a silent pen is the expected miss, not proof the wire is dead. YOWEXA reviews say it is no use on a car and that a 12–14 V test failed while 240 V worked. Use a contact meter on the loom.
Are doorbells AC, and is 8 V inside the stated window?
UK chime supplies are often AC. A doorbell guide describes 8 V, 12 V, and 24 V AC transformers, and Arlo’s UK help says to measure with a multimeter on AC. Eight volts AC sits under both the 12–1000 V and the 48–1000 V windows these pens print. A beep is not guaranteed at 12 V or 24 V AC either. Silence does not mean the transformer has failed.
Why might a review say 12 V worked without saying AC or DC?
Because the reviewer named a voltage and not the current. This comparison’s files include both claims and denials, and they do not record a meter reading beside the beep. YOWEXA reviews disagree on 12 V and include an explicit AC-only note. One cheerful sentence is not a specification. Do not generalise it to a battery, a camper, or a doorbell.
What should you use on vehicle DC instead?
A contact tester or a multimeter with the probes on the conductor and the return the diagram names. This category is a non-contact AC pen. It will not show you a steady 12 V DC fuse. It can still be a first look on the 230 V hook-up, after a known-live check, because that side is mains AC. Keep the two jobs apart.
Can the same pen still check a 230 V hook-up?
Yes, as a presence check, if you have already alarmed it on a known live 230 V socket and the cells are not flat. Every window in this comparison covers ordinary UK mains. A beep means treat the hook-up as live. Silence means check the pen again. It does not mean the pins are safe to touch, and it says nothing about the 12 V DC side of the van.
