Self-propelled or push lawn mower for a large garden

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a 400–600 m² lawn, the path slopes toward the hedge, and the amazon.co.uk page says operation mode automatic. It is easy to read that cell as driven wheels. It is not. This page answers self-propelled or push lawn mower for a large garden using the five listings in our [cordless lawn mower for large gardens comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-lawn-mower-for-large-gardens). If you need the wheels driven, none of those bullets is the evidence. We did not run the mowers. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listings say

B&Q's definition is the plain one. A self-propelled mower drives forward and you steer. A hand-propelled mower is one you push, and the motor only turns the blade. Hand-propelled, in that guide, suits smaller gardens with obstacles. A large open lawn is a different job. On all five kept listings, self-propelled is not stated in the bullets. The operation-mode cell says Automatic on each listing. A LawnMaster four-pack reviewer says there is no power-drive mode. A two-pack reviewer says it is not self-powered. An Einhell buyer who expected drive says it is not. Another review on the same listing agrees. The bullets win. The shortlist is five push rotaries, and the listed weights still differ. The two-battery LawnMaster is 13.5 kg, the Einhell 16 kg, the 35 cm Greenworks 16.5 kg, the four-pack LawnMaster 18.9 kg, and the 41 cm Greenworks 20.8 kg.

When a push mower is enough

A push mower from this set is enough when the lawn is broadly flat, you already keep the grass short, and you can push the listed weight while the packs last. At 400–600 m² a 41 cm or 43 cm deck is fewer passes than a 35 cm deck. Hayter, writing about its own battery range, aims push models at flat lawns up to about 200 m² and suggests self-propelled above about 300 m² or on slopes. That is the manufacturer's guide, not a test of these ASINs. The four-pack LawnMaster at 18.9 kg is still the top pick for packs and a roller, on the best cordless mower page, only if you can push it. The two-pack is 13.5 kg and costs more on this capture with fewer batteries. Lighter is not driven. On a flat lawn, spend the money on amp-hours.

When to insist on drive

Insist on driven wheels when the garden slopes, when someone else cannot push 14–21 kg, or when fatigue on the second battery is why the lawn gets left long. B&Q treats hand-propelled mowers as the better fit for smaller gardens. Hayter puts drive on the table from about 300 m² upward and on slopes. thebestmowers.co.uk treats drive as part of a large-lawn brief. They disagree on the square metres and agree that a slope changes the answer. The 4.8-star LawnMaster and the 43 cm Einhell do not state drive. Automatic will still be on the page after you pay. Wheel size does not substitute: the Einhell states 25 cm wheels and the Greenworks rows are about 18 cm. Larger wheels do not pull the mower uphill.

What drive costs you

A driven cordless mower is a different machine, often heavier, and often advertised above the about £240 to about £320 band these five kits were captured in. Other UK pages have discussed cordless mowers from about £329 to about £399. Those are not these ASINs. Drive also uses some of the pack to turn the wheels. We will not invent a percentage, because drive is not in the bullets. A 2.0 Ah pair is already the kit reviewers say runs out. If you leave this shortlist for a driven mower, still count amp-hours and demand a BS 1363 charger. If the lawn is also rough or wet for weeks, fuel may be the real argument, not the gearbox. If the lawn is flat and the only muddle was the word automatic, stay here, pick on width and packs, and accept that you are the drive.

Common questions

Do any of these five drive themselves?
Not on the bullets. All five leave self-propelled unstated, and LawnMaster and Einhell reviews describe push mowers. A comment that sounds like drive does not override a bullet that never states it, and you still push the listed weight every week.
What does automatic mean on the listing?
On these listings it is the operation-mode cell, and it appears even where reviewers say there is no power drive. It is not a substitute for a bullet that says the wheels are driven. If the live page still only says Automatic, ask the seller or choose another listing.
Is a push mower realistic at 400–600 m²?
Yes, if the ground is flat and you can push the listed weight, especially with a 41 cm or 43 cm deck and enough amp-hours to finish. Hayter's own guide is more cautious and starts suggesting drive above about 300 m². Use their line as a maker's range, then judge your slope.
When is a slope a reason to leave this shortlist?
When you would be pushing uphill for more than a short bank, or when someone else will be doing the mowing and cannot manage the weight. None of these five states drive, so a slope is a reason to look elsewhere rather than a reason to buy the lightest push mower and hope.
Does wheel drive use more battery?
A driven mower spends some energy on the wheels. These listings do not state drive, and we have no measurement of how many minutes that costs. Do not add a guessed runtime. If you buy a driven model, read its own amp-hours and area claim as a claim.
Are the lighter LawnMaster listings easier to push?
The two-battery LawnMaster is listed at 13.5 kg and the four-pack at 18.9 kg. It is still not self-powered, it costs more on this capture, and it states fewer batteries. Easier to push is not the same as a large-lawn kit.
