How to mow a large lawn in the UK

Updated: October 2026

The first warm weekend in spring is when a large lawn punishes a low setting and a half-charged pack. You start at the patio, the blade stalls, and the bag is already full of wet clumps. This is how to mow a large lawn in the UK with a battery rotary: dry grass, a high first cut, packs that are full, and a stop if the machine smells of burning. The steps follow the Royal Horticultural Society, with the failure mode in UK reviews of the mowers in our [cordless lawn mower for large gardens comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-lawn-mower-for-large-gardens). We did not time a lawn. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When the lawn is ready

From March to October the RHS expects a conventional lawn to need a cut weekly or fortnightly, and less often in drought, when a low cut stresses grass that is barely growing. Skip the mower when the lawn is wet or frosty. A LawnMaster reviewer stopped in wet grass because a clump stuck under the deck and first thought the battery was flat. Electrical Safety First says the same for mowers in general: do not cut wet grass, and clear stones before you start. Walk the lawn first. A ball, a molehill, or a hidden stone is enough to nick a blade. Thrive notes that many electric mowers need two hands to start, so learn the bail before the first long afternoon. There is no national clock for when you may mow. Neighbour noise in England is a statutory-nuisance test, not a Sunday ban.

The first pass on a large lawn

Clear debris, set the deck high, and do not take more than about one-third of the grass height in one go. The RHS puts a conventional lawn at about 4 cm in spring and autumn and about 2.5 cm in summer, with the first cut on the highest setting. These listings advertise ranges such as 22–80 mm, and two Greenworks pages have height cells that disagree with their bullets. Overlap each strip, and change direction next time. Stripes come from a rear roller on a dry cut, and only the LawnMaster listings state one. If the blade stalls in thick grass, raise the height and take a second pass. A Greenworks 41 cm reviewer had to leave a lower setting before thick grass would keep the motor running.

Packs, bags, and mulch

Charge the packs fully before the first use. One Greenworks review says the batteries arrived half charged. A 48 V mower in this set is two packs in the deck. When the first pair fades, fit the second and put the spent packs on the maker's charger, on a hard clear surface, then unplug it. The National Fire Chiefs Council says use that charger, give the pack air, and do not bin it. Empty the bag before it is rammed solid. Bags run from 40 litres to up to 63 litres, and a large lawn still means several trips. If clippings sit in stripes behind you, the bag is full or the grass is too damp. Mulch only short, dry clippings. Long wet grass belongs in the bag, or out of a side discharge where the listing states it. Take the pack off at the end of the day and store it dry and frost-free. The top pick page separates the roller decks.

When to stop

Stop if you smell burning, if the motor will not restart after you have raised the deck, or if a pack is swollen, hot, or damaged. Electrical Safety First says stop when a mower smells of burning. A damaged guard or a cracked deck is a job for a dealer or a competent repairer, not tape. A lawn around 1,000 m² is where B&Q's size table points at a ride-on. One LawnMaster reviewer on a garden of about that size got about two-thirds done before a charge change. That single garden is not a rating. If you cannot push the weight, or the grass is rough and wet for weeks, a contractor or a petrol machine you already trust is the honest stop. The cordless versus petrol page is that boundary.

Common questions

How often should I mow a large UK lawn?
The RHS guide is weekly or fortnightly from March to October for a conventional lawn, and less in drought. A large lawn does not need a different calendar. It needs a cut you can finish while the packs still have charge, which is easier if you never let it grow into a hay crop.
What height for the first cut in spring?
Use the highest setting and take no more than about one-third of the height. For a conventional lawn the RHS suggests about 4 cm in spring and autumn and about 2.5 cm in summer. Do not drop to a fine-lawn height these decks do not advertise.
Why does the mower stop after a few paces in long grass?
The deck is too low, the grass is too thick, or a wet clump has packed the chute. Raise the height and make a second pass. Reviewers on the 41 cm Greenworks had to do exactly that. A stall is not automatically a flat battery, though a half-charged pack will fail in the same spot.
Should I mulch or collect?
Collect, or use side discharge where the listing states it, when the grass is long. Mulch only when the clippings are short and dry. A holiday's growth clogs the deck and leaves rows of hay behind the mower after a missed week.
When do I swap batteries?
Swap when the blade speed falls off, not after the mower has already stalled in a thick patch. Put the spent packs straight on the charger if you have a second pair. On a single pair, you are waiting, so start with full packs and a high deck.
Can I mow wet grass if I am careful?
No. The RHS says not to mow wet or frosty grass, and Electrical Safety First says the same for mowers. Wet grass stalls the blade and clogs the bag, so wait until the lawn has dried off in the sun.
