Ear defenders with radio comparison 2026

The best ear defenders with radio, compared.

Top pick: Doohoeek AC195 DAB and Bluetooth Best value: ZOHAN 042 AM/FM, grey – About £49.99 with SNR 30 dB, AM/FM, 10 presets on each band, a 3.5 mm lead and a bag. AA cells are not included. Updated 21 October 2026.

Ear defenders with radio are over-ear cups that cut noise with a seal and also play a broadcast station, sometimes with Bluetooth as well. The checks that change the buy are the tuner, the stated against the Health and Safety Executive task table, and a power source you can live with. Stars are comfort and reliability opinions, not a measured attenuation test. What to read before you pay is in the [ear defenders with radio buying guide](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders-with-radio/sub/ear-defenders-with-radio-buying-guide). In the UK they are bought for mowing, strimming, workshops and similar jobs where a passive cup would otherwise mean silence, or a lifted pad so you can hear a phone.

Ear defenders with radio are over-ear cups that cut noise with a seal and also play a broadcast station, sometimes with Bluetooth as well.

The best ear defenders with radio in detail

Doohoeek AC195 DAB and Bluetooth

Rank 1

Doohoeek AC195 DAB and Bluetooth

∼£73

Our view

The Doohoeek AC195 is the cup at about £72.99 that claims DAB+, DAB and FM plus Bluetooth 6.0, with a 2000 mAh pack and stated play times of up to 70 hours on Bluetooth and 20 hours on radio. It weighs 500 g, the heaviest in this set, and the listing prints 30 dB passive isolation rather than an SNR. amazon.co.uk shows 5.0 from 6 ratings, dated from 20 September 2026 to 1 October 2026, and none of those six texts records a fault. Reviewers mention heavy machinery, a mow, clear DAB and simple controls, and one still calls the set expensive while recommending it. One review mixes mowing with a camping and festival paragraph, so it is not a clean garden-only note. A two-year warranty is stated, and a 3.5 mm cable is claimed in the bullets, while the box-contents field is only a cable. Six perfect scores are not the same evidence as 4.3 from 1,374, and without a printed SNR you cannot place it on the HSE table from the listing alone.

Pros

  • DAB+, DAB and FM claimed, plus Bluetooth 6.0 and a microphone
  • 2000 mAh, with up to 70 hours Bluetooth and 20 hours radio stated
  • Six written reviews, all positive, and a two-year warranty on the listing
  • About £72.99, the lower of the two DAB prices in this set

Cons

  • 5.0 from only 6 ratings, all from late September and early October 2026
  • No SNR printed, only 30 dB passive isolation
  • 500 g, the heaviest cup here
  • Box contents are thinner than the bullet list

Best for: You need a DAB or DAB+ claim at about £72.99 and you will not treat six stars as a test.

Less suitable: You need a printed SNR, a large UK review file, or a lighter cup for a long mow.

Common questions

Does the Doohoeek listing say it works with DAB in the UK?

The bullets claim DAB+, DAB and FM, and an LCD for the station. They do not show a coverage map or a Digital Radio tick.

Is an SNR printed?

No. The listing says 30 dB passive noise isolation. It does not print SNR.

Can it be used with a wire?

Yes. The bullets say a 3.5 mm AUX cable is included as well as Bluetooth 6.0.

ZOHAN 042 AM/FM, grey

Rank 2

ZOHAN 042 AM/FM, grey

∼£50

Our view

The grey ZOHAN 042 is an AM/FM cup at about £49.99 that reviewers use for chainsawing and driving posts, with SNR 30 dB printed and 4.4 from 406 amazon.co.uk ratings. FM is listed from 87.5 to 108 MHz, with up to 10 presets on FM and 10 on AM, and the box includes a 3.5 mm lead plus a leather bag. You supply two AA cells; they are not in the box, and several reviews say the later design runs them down quickly. Reception is praised once the right frequency is found, though one buyer reported static until the station was retuned. The headband spring was too strong for an older wearer, and one set stopped working after about six months. A review on the shared text says digital stations cannot be received, which matches an AM/FM-only listing. There is no microphone, the highlight line says wireless while the bullets describe a cord, and the box line says 054 against part number 042. In this set it is the best value when you want a printed SNR 30 dB and a broadcast radio you can keep going with spare cells.

Pros

  • About £49.99 with SNR 30 dB, AM/FM and 10 presets on each band
  • 4.4 from 406 amazon.co.uk ratings, with chainsaw and post-driving notes
  • 3.5 mm lead and a leather bag in the box; cushions described as replaceable
  • A one-year warranty is stated on this grey listing

Cons

  • Two AA cells are not included, and reviews describe heavy drain
  • No DAB, no Bluetooth and no microphone
  • Clamp too firm for some heads; one set failed at about six months
  • Box line says 054 while the part number is 042

Best for: You want FM or AM during mowing or saw work and you prefer cells you can swap when they die.

Less suitable: You need a named DAB or DAB+ station, hands-free calls, or a lighter clamp for long wear.

Common questions

Does this ZOHAN listing include Bluetooth?

No. The bullets describe AM/FM, an LCD and a 3.5 mm cord. Bluetooth is not stated. The highlight line says wireless, which conflicts with that cord.

Are batteries in the box?

No. The listing says it is powered by two AA batteries, not included.

What attenuation does the listing print?

SNR 30 dB and NRR 25 dB. The UK figure to read is the SNR. The listing says Europe Standard and does not print a BS EN number.

ZOHAN 042 AM/FM, yellow

Rank 3

ZOHAN 042 AM/FM, yellow

∼£50

Our view

The yellow ZOHAN 042 makes the same AM/FM claim as the grey cup, at the same shelf price of about £49.99, with SNR 30 dB and a listed weight of 280 g rather than 300 g. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.4 from 406 ratings, and the 50 UK review texts in the file are the same as on the grey listing, so they are not a second sample. Reviewers still describe noise blocking while chainsawing or driving posts, and radio that works once it is on a clear frequency. The same limits travel with that text: a spring that felt too firm, AA cells that drain on the redesign, and one failure at about six months. The fit-type field says behind the head while the style line says over-ear, so you cannot tell the wearing position from the page alone. A warranty is not printed on this extract, unlike the one-year line on the grey listing. Choose yellow when you want that colour and you have checked the clamp; skip it if you needed DAB, a microphone, or a review file that belongs only to this ASIN.

Pros

  • Same AM/FM shelf at about £49.99 as the grey 042, with SNR 30 dB printed
  • Listed at 280 g, with a 3.5 mm lead and a leather bag
  • Up to 10 AM and 10 FM presets, and FM stated as 87.5–108 MHz
  • Replaceable cushions are described, as on the grey listing

Cons

  • The 406 ratings and the review texts are shared with the grey ASIN
  • Fit type says behind the head; the style line says over-ear
  • No warranty line on this extract, and AA cells are not included
  • No DAB and no microphone

Best for: You want the yellow 042 and you accept that its reviews are the grey listing’s file.

Less suitable: You need a unique review sample, a clear over-head fit on the page, or DAB.

Common questions

How is the yellow ZOHAN different from the grey listing?

Both say model 042, about £49.99, SNR 30 dB and the same AM/FM ranges. This listing is yellow and 280 g. The grey listing is 300 g. Both show 4.4 from 406 reviews.

Does the yellow listing receive DAB?

No. It states AM and FM only. A review on the shared text says digital stations cannot be received.

Is a storage bag included?

Yes. Included components list a leather storage bag, a manual and a 3.5 mm cord.

PROTEAR E8830BT FM/AM, blue

Rank 4

PROTEAR E8830BT FM/AM, blue

∼£79

Our view

The blue PROTEAR E8830BT is the FM/AM cup at about £78.60 that carries 4.3 from 1,374 amazon.co.uk ratings, the largest review file in this set. The listing prints SNR 30 dB, 40 presets, a built-in microphone and a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, at 300 g. A timber-mill review describes an eight-hour shift with the battery lasting and Bluetooth staying clear until the pack ran out. A grass-cutting review on a tractor was comfortable until a slight pinch at about five hours in the heat. Some buyers say cups without Bluetooth blocked more noise, an ear pad came off and was lost, and one person is on a third pair after breakages, including a set that was driven over. Bluetooth 5.0 appears on the colour line only; the bullets do not print a version, and a 3.5 mm lead is not listed. The same 50 review texts appear on the red listing, so you should not add the two star counts together. In this comparison it is the top pick when you want FM or AM plus a phone on one rechargeable cup and you can accept that the evidence is shared with the red colourway.

Pros

  • 4.3 from 1,374 amazon.co.uk ratings, the largest file in this set
  • SNR 30 dB, FM/AM and 40 presets printed
  • Microphone for hands-free calls; a mill review describes a shift on one charge
  • A seller replaced a lost ear pad in one review

Cons

  • Some reviewers say non-Bluetooth cups blocked more noise
  • Pad loss, breakage and a pinch after about five hours appear in the reviews
  • No 3.5 mm lead is stated; Bluetooth 5.0 is only on the colour line
  • The review texts are shared with the red listing

Best for: You want FM or AM plus a phone for a workshop or mowing day and you will charge a sealed pack.

Less suitable: You need DAB, a wired aux lead in the box, or AA cells you can swap outdoors.

PROTEAR E8830BT FM/AM, red

Rank 5

PROTEAR E8830BT FM/AM, red

∼£79

Our view

The red PROTEAR listing uses the same FM/AM bullets as the blue E8830BT: SNR 30 dB, 40 presets, Bluetooth, a microphone and about £78.60, at 300 g. It shows the same 4.3 from 1,374 ratings, and the review texts match the blue file rather than a separate sample. Workshop shifts, a battery that lasted a mill day, and tractor grass-cutting are in that shared text, along with tightness after several hours and a lost pad. This extract does not print a model number, and the material field says plastic while the blue listing says foam. Bluetooth 5.0 is again only on the colour string, and no auxiliary lead is stated. Buy the red cup when you want that colour of the same FM/AM set; do not treat the star line as extra proof beyond the blue ASIN.

Pros

  • Same FM/AM, 40-preset and SNR 30 dB bullets as the blue cup
  • Microphone and a rechargeable pack stated, at 300 g and about £78.60
  • Shared reviews describe mill shifts and tractor grass-cutting
  • Adjustable headband is stated

Cons

  • The 1,374 ratings are the same file as the blue listing
  • No model number on this extract
  • Material says plastic here and foam on the blue listing
  • Tightness, a lost pad and breakage are in the shared reviews

Best for: You want the red colourway of the FM/AM PROTEAR and you have read the blue listing’s limits.

Less suitable: You want a separate review sample, a printed model number, or DAB.

Common questions

Is the red listing a different radio from the blue one?

The bullets match: FM/AM, 40 presets, Bluetooth, microphone, SNR 30 dB, about £78.60. The colour string is red. Material says plastic here and foam on the blue listing.

Does it state a model number?

This extract does not print a model number. The blue listing of the same bullets prints E8830BT.

How many reviews does the listing show?

4.3 out of 5 from 1,374 ratings, the same count as the blue listing.

PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+

Rank 6

PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+

∼£109

Our view

The PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ is the black cup at about £108.60 whose title says DAB/DAB+ and FM, with Bluetooth 5.4, a microphone and SNR 30 dB printed, at 300 g. amazon.co.uk shows 4.0 from 603 ratings, a smaller and lower file than the FM/AM pair from the same brand. Reviewers praise hands-free use, crisp sound and DAB with garden machines, including a tractor and a sit-on mower, and several mention a warranty replacement that arrived quickly. The repeated complaint is charging: one first pair stopped after six months and the replacement after four, and another set would not charge after about a year even with a new battery. DAB is described as occasionally patchy, the battery can be loose, and the cups felt tight after a few hours of mowing. Battery hours and a preset count are not printed on this extract, and the fit-type field says behind the head. It is the DAB option in this set that has hundreds of reviews and a printed SNR, at the highest price here. Skip it if you only need FM, or if a sealed pack that reviewers say can stop taking a charge is a deal-breaker.

Pros

  • Title claims DAB/DAB+ and FM, with SNR 30 dB printed
  • 4.0 from 603 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • Bluetooth 5.4 and a microphone; reviews mention calls with a machine running
  • Warranty replacements are praised in more than one review

Cons

  • About £108.60, the highest price in this set
  • Several reviews describe sets that stopped charging after months
  • DAB called patchy outdoors, and the battery can be loose
  • Hours and a preset count are not printed; fit type says behind the head

Best for: You need DAB or DAB+ named on the cup, you want a printed SNR, and you accept the charge-failure reviews.

Less suitable: You only listen to FM, or you want AA cells instead of a sealed pack.

PROHEAR 033 AM/FM and Bluetooth

Rank 7

PROHEAR 033 AM/FM and Bluetooth

∼£90

Our view

The green PROHEAR 033 is listed at about £89.99 with SNR 31 dB, an AM/FM tuner, Bluetooth 5.4, a microphone and USB-C charging, at 400 g. On amazon.co.uk it shows 3.6 from 9 ratings, and the file contains four written UK reviews. Three of those describe comfort, mowing, or using the radio and Bluetooth for music. The fourth says the set stopped charging after three months and that a warranty chase went unanswered. The water-resistance field says not water resistant, while the enclosure line mentions a waterproof headband, so those two lines disagree. Play time is described as all-day without a number of hours, and a preset count is not stated. The feature list is wider than the ZOHAN, but nine ratings are too thin to treat this as the proven workshop cup in the set.

Pros

  • Highest printed SNR in the set, at 31 dB
  • AM/FM, Bluetooth 5.4, a microphone and a 3.5 mm jack
  • USB-C charging and a foldable cup are stated
  • Three of the four written reviews mention comfort, mowing or music

Cons

  • 3.6 from only 9 amazon.co.uk ratings
  • One written review says it stopped charging after three months
  • Water-resistance field contradicts the waterproof headband line
  • About £89.99 with hours and a preset count not numbered

Best for: You want SNR 31 dB, AM/FM and a phone lead on one green cup and you accept a nine-rating file.

Less suitable: You want hundreds of UK reviews, a settled water-resistance line, or DAB.

The water-resistance field says not water resistant. The enclosure line mentions a waterproof headband. Both are on the listing.

What did the four written reviews say?

Three describe comfort, mowing, radio or Bluetooth. One says the set stopped charging after three months and the warranty chase failed.

How we compared

Scores use the seven amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison. They are editorial, from 0 to 100, and they are not a lab attenuation test. A star line is not a measured SNR. No separate methodology note was filed for this set, so the weights follow the buying criteria in the digest and sum to 100. The highest score is the top pick. The best price against a printed SNR, a broadcast tuner and a lead you can keep using is the best value, on a different listing.

1

Tuner

22%

AM/FM only cannot receive a DAB or DAB+ station. FM is still on air; the 2021 government review said it would be needed at least until 2030. Bluetooth streams a phone and is not a broadcast tuner. A DAB claim scores only when the listing names DAB or DAB+. Ofcom’s March 2023 report is coverage context, not a reception test of these cups.

2

Stated attenuation

22%

The figure used is the printed SNR, read against the HSE task table, with the published 4 dB real-world derating kept as guidance rather than applied as a lab result. NRR is not treated as the UK figure. A listing that prints only passive isolation, with no SNR, cannot be placed on that table from the page. Europe Standard and ISEL tested are not an EN number.

3

Power

16%

Two AA cells are replaceable and were not in the ZOHAN box. A sealed rechargeable pack is scored on what the listing prints (USB-C, milliamp hours, or hours) and on review notes that charging later failed. A claimed shift length is a listing claim, not a timed test.

4

Calls and a wire

16%

A microphone is required for hands-free calls. A 3.5 mm lead is the fallback when the radio or the battery misbehaves. A cup with neither a microphone nor a stated lead does not score this block. Lifting a pad to take a call is treated as a broken seal, not as a feature.

5

Seal, weight and review evidence

24%

Stars are scaled from the amazon.co.uk line and cut when the file is small. The full block needs a large file. A 5.0 from six ratings is not the same evidence as 4.3 from 1,374. Shared review text on a second colour is not a second sample. Glasses, hair and a firm clamp sit in the review notes. Weight is taken from the listing. This is not a fit trial.

Ear defenders with radio buying guide

Read the tuner before the Bluetooth version. AM/FM, a named DAB station, and a phone stream are three different purchases, and none of them is a measured hearing test.

What are ear defenders with radio?

Ear defenders with radio are over-ear cups that reduce noise by a seal and also play a broadcast station. Some add Bluetooth. In the UK they are bought for mowing, strimming, workshops and similar jobs where a passive cup would otherwise mean silence, or a lifted pad so you can hear a phone. Lifting the cup breaks the seal. This amazon.co.uk set has seven listings.

Best for

  • Someone who wants FM or AM during mowing and will keep spare AA cells
  • Someone who wants a rechargeable cup with a microphone for a workshop shift

Not ideal for

  • A DAB-only station bought on an AM/FM cup
  • Anyone treating a six-rating 5.0 as a measured attenuation test

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying AM/FM for a DAB-only station

AM/FM cannot receive DAB or DAB+. Bluetooth is a phone stream, not a broadcast tuner. In this set only the Doohoeek AC195 and the PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ claim DAB.

  2. 2

    Reading NRR as SNR

The UK figure is the SNR. The ZOHAN listings also print NRR 25 dB. Do not convert that into a UK SNR. The Doohoeek page prints 30 dB passive isolation and no SNR, so it cannot be placed on the HSE table from the listing alone.

  3. 3

Treating a thin 5.0 as a test win

The Doohoeek line is 5.0 from six ratings in late September and early October 2026. The blue PROTEAR line is 4.3 from 1,374. Stars are comfort and reliability opinions. They are not a measured attenuation test.

What to weigh up

Tuner and stated attenuation

High

Name the station before you compare Bluetooth versions. AM/FM only cannot receive a DAB or DAB+ station. FM remains on air; the 2021 government review said it would be needed at least until 2030. Ofcom’s March 2023 report put BBC national DAB at about 97.4% of homes and local DAB at about 92%. A home coverage figure is not a reception test outdoors. Then read the SNR against the HSE bands: 20 or less for 85–90 dB tasks, 20–30 for 90–95, 25–35 for 95–100, and 30 or more for 100–105.

Power, calls and the seal

High

Two AA cells are replaceable and were not in the ZOHAN box. Reviews on that shared text describe heavy drain. A sealed pack on the PROTEAR, PROHEAR and Doohoeek cups lasts a claimed shift and then becomes the failure reviewers describe: charging that stopped after months, including a PROHEAR note at three months and PROTEAR DAB notes at four months, six months and about a year. A microphone is required for hands-free calls. The ZOHAN cups do not state one.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A station while you mow

You want FM or AM during mowing or saw work and you would rather swap AA cells than wait on a charger. The grey ZOHAN 042 is the best value: about £49.99, SNR 30 dB, 10 presets on each band, a 3.5 mm lead and a bag. Cells are not in the box, and reviews describe heavy drain.

A rechargeable workshop shift

You want FM or AM plus a phone on one cup, and you will charge a sealed pack. The blue PROTEAR E8830BT is the top pick: about £78.60, SNR 30 dB, 40 presets, a microphone, and 4.3 from 1,374 ratings. A mill review describes one charge across a shift. The same review texts sit on the red listing.

A named DAB station

You need DAB or DAB+ named on the cup and a printed SNR. The PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ is about £108.60, SNR 30 dB, Bluetooth 5.4, with 4.0 from 603 ratings. Several reviews say charging later failed. If exposure at work has not been assessed, this listing is not a substitute for that assessment.

Common questions about ear defenders with radio

Which ear defenders with radio are the top pick?
The top pick is the blue PROTEAR E8830BT at about £78.60. It scores 83, the highest in this set, with SNR 30 dB, FM/AM, 40 presets, a microphone and 4.3 from 1,374 amazon.co.uk ratings. That file is shared with the red listing, so the two counts are not separate samples. It does not receive DAB, and no 3.5 mm lead is stated. Best value is a different cup: the grey ZOHAN 042 at about £49.99, AM/FM on two AA cells that are not in the box.
How much do ear defenders with radio cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set the shelf price runs from about £49.99 to about £108.60. Both ZOHAN 042 colours are about £49.99. The Doohoeek DAB cup is about £72.99. Both PROTEAR FM/AM colours are about £78.60. The PROHEAR 033 is about £89.99. The PROTEAR DAB cup is about £108.60. These are the prices on the seven listings, not a market average, and they can move.
Should you buy AM/FM or DAB?
AM/FM cannot receive a DAB or DAB+ station. FM is still on air; the 2021 government review said it would be needed at least until 2030. Bluetooth streams a phone and is not a broadcast tuner. In this set the ZOHAN cups and the FM/AM PROTEAR cups are AM or FM only. The Doohoeek AC195 and the PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ claim DAB. When to pick DAB, FM or a phone is set out under DAB or FM.
What SNR should you look for?
HSE’s guide uses SNR bands: 20 or less for 85–90 dB tasks, 20–30 for 90–95, 25–35 for 95–100, and 30 or more for 100–105. Derate manufacturer data by 4 dB for real-world fit, and avoid pulling the ear below 70 dB. Do not read the US NRR as the UK figure. Six cups here print SNR 30 dB or 31 dB. The Doohoeek listing prints 30 dB passive isolation and no SNR, so you cannot place it on that table from the page alone.
Does a high star rating mean the cup was tested?
No. Stars are comfort and reliability opinions, not a measured attenuation test. A 5.0 from six Doohoeek ratings, dated from 20 September 2026 to 1 October 2026, is a thin file. The PROHEAR line is 3.6 from nine ratings. The blue PROTEAR line is 4.3 from 1,374, and the same review texts sit on the red listing. The grey and yellow ZOHAN lines are both 4.4 from 406, again one shared file. None of these scores is a laboratory attenuation result.
What happens when the battery dies?
A dead radio does not remove the passive seal. Treating protection as gone when the battery dies is a mistake. The ZOHAN cups take two AA cells that are not in the box, and reviews describe heavy drain. The rechargeable cups can fail by stopping charge: one PROHEAR review says charging died at three months, and several PROTEAR DAB reviews describe sets that stopped charging after months. Where the listing includes a 3.5 mm lead, that lead is the fallback when the radio misbehaves.
Is a Bluetooth muff the same as ear defenders with radio?
No. Bluetooth streams a phone. It is not a broadcast tuner, so a Bluetooth-only muff is a different category from ear defenders with radio. 3M WorkTunes Connect is a Bluetooth reference at SNR 31 dB with EN 352-1:2020 and no broadcast radio. Cups in that group sit under electronic ear defenders. In this set, Bluetooth is an extra on the PROTEAR, PROHEAR and Doohoeek cups, beside AM/FM or a DAB claim.
When should you call a competent person?
Call a competent person when workers’ exposure has not been assessed, when a hard hat or a respirator must seal with the cup, when chainsaw noise may need more than one protector, or when you already have ringing or muffled hearing. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set a lower action value of 80 dB(A), an upper of 85 dB(A), and an exposure limit of 87 dB(A). Protection counts only towards the limit. At the upper value, employers provide protectors if other controls are not enough.

Our verdict

The top pick is the blue PROTEAR E8830BT at about £78.60. It scores 83, the highest here, with SNR 30 dB, FM/AM, 40 presets, a microphone and 4.3 from 1,374 amazon.co.uk ratings, the largest file in the set. It is not a lab attenuation crown: some reviewers say cups without Bluetooth blocked more noise, no 3.5 mm lead is stated, and the review texts are shared with the red listing. Best value is the grey ZOHAN 042 at about £49.99, a different ASIN, with SNR 30 dB, AM/FM, a 3.5 mm lead and a bag. You supply two AA cells. Skip both if you need a named DAB or DAB+ station. Skip a 5.0 from six ratings if you wanted a large UK review file.
