Ear defenders for mowing with radio

Updated: 21 October 2026

The mower is loud enough that you lift a cup to hear the radio, and that lift is the part that undoes the protection. Ear defenders for mowing with radio keep a station in the cup so you can leave the seal on for the whole cut. This page stays with push mowers, strimmers and ride-ons, and with the amazon.co.uk reviews that mention those machines, from the seven rows on [ear defenders with radio](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders-with-radio). It is not a noise assessment of your lawn, and a workshop saw is a different job. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why a radio cup is used on a mower

A passive cup is quieter and also mute, so people crack one pad to hear a commentary. HSE has warned that taking protection off for even a few minutes cuts the protection sharply. A built-in tuner puts the station in the cups before the engine starts. The electronics do not change the seal. If the battery dies, the muff still reduces noise while it stays seated. Reviewers here mention tractor grass-cutting, a sit-on mower and a pinch after several hours in the heat. That is comfort, not a measurement of the mower. A UK dealer price around £248.76 including VAT for a DAB+ 3M PELTOR headband, and a Hellberg Synergy DR at SNR 30 dB, sit above this amazon set. They are context, not a row in these seven. If the cut is short and you will swap cells, the AA ZOHAN is the practical end of the shelf. If the station has left FM, start on the DAB or FM page.

What SNR band to start from

There is no HSE figure in these sources for a domestic mower, and this page will not borrow a chart that calls every mower 90 dB. Once you know the level from the handbook or a proper measurement, HSE’s table points to an SNR of 20 to 30 dB for about 90–95 dB, 25 to 35 for 95–100, and 30 or more for 100–105. Take 4 dB off for a real-world fit, including glasses, and avoid driving the ear below about 70 dB. Several listings print SNR 30 dB. On a 90–95 dB task that is the top of the suggested range. The Doohoeek prints 30 dB of passive isolation and no SNR, so you cannot place it on that table from the page. A chainsaw is a different job: HSE RR1183 puts typical petrol chainsaw emission around 100 dB(A). Tuner, then SNR, then power is the order on the buying guide.

What reviewers in this set wore outside

The blue PROTEAR E8830BT at £78.60, SNR 30 dB, has 4.3 from 1,374 ratings. A tractor grass-cutting review was comfortable until a slight pinch at about five hours in the heat. The red listing uses the same file, so that note is one sample. It does not receive DAB, and you have to charge a sealed pack. The PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ at £108.60, SNR 30 dB, has 4.0 from 603 ratings. Reviews mention DAB on a tractor and a sit-on mower, tightness after a few hours, and charging that stopped after months. The PROHEAR 033 at £89.99 has 3.6 from nine ratings, and one review says charging stopped after three months. The Doohoeek at £72.99 weighs 500 g, claims DAB, and shows 5.0 from six ratings. The ZOHAN 042 is £49.99 with two AA cells that are not in the box. Its reviews mention chainsawing more often than a named mower. Seat the seal as on how to wear ear defenders.

FM, DAB and a phone in the garden

FM is enough when the station is still on FM and you stored the preset outside, not in the kitchen. The ZOHAN lists FM from 87.5 to 108 MHz. One review had static until the station was retuned. An AM/FM cup, including the PROHEAR and both colours of the PROTEAR E8830BT, will not follow a DAB-only service. DAB is the tuner for that moved service, and reviewers call it patchy away from the house. Ofcom’s March 2023 home coverage, about 97.4% for BBC national DAB and about 92% for local DAB, is not the lee of a hedge. If the multiplex drops, FM on the same cup is the fallback that does not mean lifting a pad. The Doohoeek is the cheaper DAB claim, at £72.99, without a printed SNR. The PROTEAR DAB cup has the larger file and the charging complaints, at £108.60. A phone covers a podcast and fails when the handset is indoors. We did not measure your mower.

Common questions

Are radio ear defenders worth it for a petrol mower?
They are worth it when you would otherwise lift a cup to hear a station, because that lift throws away the protection while the pad is open. They are a poor buy if you never listen while you cut. The AA ZOHAN at £49.99 suits FM and spare cells. A rechargeable cup suits DAB or a phone if you will charge it.
Is SNR 30 too much for mowing?
HSE’s table suggests SNR 20 to 30 for a task around 90–95 dB, so 30 is the top of that band. On a quieter cut it can leave the ear so quiet that you lift a pad. There is no HSE figure here for a domestic mower. A chainsaw near 100 dB(A) is a different job.
Will FM be enough in the garden?
FM is enough when your station is still on FM and the preset was saved where you mow. The ZOHAN, the PROHEAR and the PROTEAR E8830BT stay silent on a DAB-only service. One ZOHAN review had static until the frequency was corrected. Check the preset outside before you rely on it.
Which of these listings were reviewed on a mower?
PROTEAR FM/AM reviews include tractor grass-cutting, with a pinch at about five hours. PROTEAR DAB reviews mention a tractor and a sit-on mower. Three PROHEAR reviews mention mowing, in a file of nine ratings. Doohoeek reviewers mention a mow, in six ratings. ZOHAN reviews talk more about chainsawing than a named mower.
Will they stay comfortable for a long cut?
A PROTEAR FM/AM tractor review was fine until a pinch at about five hours. DAB PROTEAR cups felt tight after a few hours of mowing. The Doohoeek is 500 g and the PROHEAR is 400 g, against about 280 g to 300 g for the ZOHAN. A firm ZOHAN spring was too much for one older wearer.
What if DAB drops out behind a hedge?
Treat it as coverage, not a dead cup. Ofcom’s March 2023 figures are about homes, not a hedge. PROTEAR DAB reviews already call reception patchy. If the set also has FM, use that preset instead of lifting a cup. A phone stream works only while the handset is with you.
Should a chainsaw use the same cup?
Only after you treat the saw as its own noise problem. HSE RR1183 cites petrol chainsaws around 100 dB(A), with measured cutting from 83 to 104 dB(A). A printed SNR of 30 dB still assumes a real seal. It is not a reason to skip an assessment if the work is paid.
