Radio ear defenders buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are in the shed with a mower, a strimmer or a bench tool, and the amazon.co.uk titles all seem to say radio. Some cups receive AM and FM, some receive DAB, and a few only stream a phone. This radio ear defenders buying guide is the order to use before you compare brands on the [ear defenders with radio](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders-with-radio) comparison: tuner, then stated SNR against the job, then power. The seven listings run from a £49.99 AM/FM pair on AA cells to a DAB pair at £108.60. Stars there are comfort and reliability opinions, not a measured attenuation test.

What you are actually buying

The foam seal reduces the noise. The electronics only play sound into that quieter space. A tuner does not change the stated SNR, and a flat battery does not cancel the protection while the cups stay seated. An AM/FM cup takes analogue stations still on air. A DAB or DAB+ cup can also take a digital multiplex. Bluetooth plays the phone and is not a broadcast tuner, so you get no station if the handset is indoors or flat. FM was still expected to be needed at least until 2030, though it cannot fetch a service that has left FM. If your station has moved, read DAB or FM ear defenders before you pay the premium.

Read the SNR against the job

SNR is the decibel figure a UK listing should print. It describes the muff in a laboratory, not your Saturday exposure. The Health and Safety Executive’s guide uses these bands: an SNR of 20 dB or less for about 85–90 dB, 20–30 for 90–95, 25–35 for 95–100, and 30 or more for 100–105. Take 4 dB off the printed figure for a real-world fit, and avoid driving the sound at your ear below about 70 dB. The ZOHAN pair prints SNR 30 dB and NRR 25 dB. NRR is the American rating, so use 30 and do not add the figures. “Europe Standard” is not BS EN 352-1 and not EN 352-8. Glasses and a cap change the seal, which is covered in how to wear ear defenders.

Power, calls and a wire

The ZOHAN 042, grey or yellow, takes two AA cells, and those cells were not in the box. You can swap them when the station dies halfway down the lawn. The other five listings are rechargeable, which suits a workshop shift if charging is a habit, and fails you when the pack fades after a year while the seal is still sound. The Doohoeek claims up to 20 hours on radio, and the PROTEAR DAB extract prints no battery-hour figure. The PROTEAR AM/FM and DAB cups include a microphone. The ZOHAN’s 3.5 mm lead plugs a phone in without Bluetooth. Who should skip which row is on best ear defenders with radio.

How the listings in this set split

Seven ASINs collapse into three decisions, and this is not a ranked winner. AM/FM on AA cells is the ZOHAN 042 in grey and yellow. Both are £49.99, SNR 30 dB, with 10 presets on each band, a 3.5 mm lead and a bag, at 4.4 from 406 ratings. You supply the batteries, and you give up DAB. AM/FM plus Bluetooth is the PROTEAR E8830BT in blue and red, both £78.60, SNR 30 dB, a microphone, and 4.3 from 1,374 ratings. The PROHEAR 033 is £89.99, SNR 31 dB, and 3.6 from nine ratings. Nine ratings cannot settle reliability. DAB and FM is the Doohoeek AC195 at £72.99, with 5.0 from six ratings and 30 dB of passive isolation rather than a printed SNR, and the PROTEAR E8830BTDAB+ at £108.60, SNR 30 dB, at 4.0 from 603 ratings. These are extract prices, not a promise of today’s lowest on amazon.co.uk.

Common questions

Do I need DAB or is FM enough?
FM is enough when your station is still on FM. Choose DAB or DAB+ when that station has left the analogue band, because an AM/FM cup cannot receive it. Coverage is wide for national multiplexes and a little lower locally, and a metal shed can still drop the signal.
Is SNR 30 right for my tool, or too much?
Around 95–105 dB, an SNR of 30 dB sits in the HSE band, after you take about 4 dB off for fit. Nearer 85–90 dB it can be more than you want, because the guide asks you not to push the ear below about 70 dB. Without a measurement of your own machine, 30 dB is a common shelf figure, not a personal prescription.
Why does the ZOHAN show NRR 25 and SNR 30?
The listing prints two rating systems. SNR 30 dB is the figure for the UK bands. NRR 25 dB is the American rating, and it is not a lower British SNR. Do not average the two numbers.
Should I buy AA or rechargeable?
Choose the AA ZOHAN if you would rather swap cells than wait on a charger, and you can live without Bluetooth and DAB. Choose a rechargeable cup if you will charge it between sessions and you want a microphone, Bluetooth or DAB. Empty AAs are a shop errand. A tired lithium pack means a new cup.
Does Bluetooth replace the radio?
Bluetooth plays the phone. If the handset is indoors or flat, you have no station. A built-in AM/FM or DAB tuner does not need that handset. A Bluetooth-only muff can carry podcasts and calls, and it is a different product from the radio cups here.
What if the listing only says “Europe Standard”?
Look for user information that names a standard, such as a BS EN 352 part. “Europe Standard” is a marketing line, not that number. These extracts do not state the 82 dB(A) playback cap from the EN 352-8 test method, so do not assume it from the title.
When is this an employer decision rather than a shop decision?
When people are at work and exposure has not been assessed, the 2005 regulations put the duties on the employer, including protectors at 85 dB(A) where other controls fall short. Get a competent person if a hard hat or respirator must seal with the cups, or if you already have ringing or muffled hearing.
