How to use a torque wrench

Updated: October 2026

You have a click wrench from this amazon.co.uk shelf, and the next few minutes decide whether the click means anything. How to use a torque wrench, on these listings, is a short sequence: unlock, set the printed mark, lock, pull slowly from the middle of the handle, and stop when it clicks. Then wind it back to the lowest marked setting on that wrench, which is not zero. The [Vanpo torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/vanpo-torque-wrench) shows the twelve scales. This page does not rank them. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the mark that is on the wrench

Start from the fastener’s own number, on the handbook, the stem, or the seatpost, and check that it sits on the scale in your hand. Unlock the end knob, wind only inside the printed marks, line up the main scale and the collar, then lock the handle before you pull. A setting made while the handle is still locked will not hold. A setting below the lowest line is not a setting the scale owns. The lowest line depends on the wrench. On the Vanpo 1/2 inch tools here it is 20 Nm. On the AivaToba 1/4 inch wrench it is 2 Nm. If you need 6 Nm and the wrench starts at 20 Nm, careful winding will not create a 6 Nm click. One ETOOLAB review describes a fastener letting go around 6–7 Nm on a scale that starts at 20 Nm. Choose another window first, which is what the torque wrench buying guide is for.

Pull until the click, then stop

Seat the socket square on the fastener. Pull slowly from the centre of the handle, with the wrench at 90 degrees to the bolt, and keep your other hand off the head. The click is the stop. ETOOLAB and ATsafepro both say to stop there. If you are unsure you felt it, slacken and pull once more rather than leaning on the handle. Park Tool notes that the click can be quiet at low settings, and that you should watch the head deflect. On a bicycle wrench at about 5 Nm you will not get a workshop bang, and waiting for one is how you pull past the mark. The quiet end of the scale is the whole job on the bicycle torque wrench page. AivaToba’s bullet limits that wrench to final tightening, so crack a stuck bolt with a spanner.

Put it away at the lowest mark

When the job is finished, unlock the handle and wind down to the lowest marked setting. On a Vanpo 1/2 inch wrench from this shelf that mark is 20 Nm. On AivaToba it is 2 Nm. Zero sits below the scale, and the spring is not meant to be collapsed past the bottom line. Norbar says never go below the minimum mark, and that occasional users should return to it. A small test on Norbar’s own wrenches stayed in tolerance either way. That test is not a Vanpo result, and it does not rewrite the 20 Nm or 2 Nm bullet in the case you bought. Store it in the case at the bottom mark.

Extensions and open forks

A straight extension along the bolt does not change the torque. The 125 mm extension with Vanpo VP01-220 moves your hand clear of the wheel. The setting stays the torque at the nut if you pull from the handle centre and keep the extension in line with the bolt. An open fork is the exception, and these files do not support a length formula. Tekton’s note says a crowfoot at 90 degrees to the handle does not change the torque. In line with the handle, it lengthens the lever, so the fastener sees a different torque from the mark. Use it inside 10–100 Nm, and use a socket when you can. The car pattern is on the torque wrench for wheel nuts page.

Common questions

What do I do when it clicks?
Stop. The click ends the pull. If you went past the click, slacken the bolt and tighten once more to a single click. A second click on a bolt already at the setting is extra torque.
Do I unwind it to zero?
Wind to the lowest marked setting and stop there. Zero is below the scale these wrenches are built with. On this shelf the Vanpo 1/2 inch mark to return to is 20 Nm, and the AivaToba mark is 2 Nm.
What is the lowest mark on the Vanpo 1/2 inch?
It is 20 Nm on the Vanpo 1/2 inch rows in this table. After the job you wind back to 20 Nm rather than to a blank stop past the numbers. That line is also the bottom of the scale, so a stem bolt cannot be set on it.
Can I loosen a bolt with it?
Undo the fastener with a spanner or a breaker bar, then use the torque wrench for the final tightening only. AivaToba prints that limit on the listing. If a spanner will not move it, that is a workshop job.
Does an extension change the torque?
A straight extension in line with the bolt does not, if you pull from the middle of the handle and keep the extension and the bolt in one line. An open fork held in line with the handle does change the lever, so the mark is no longer the torque at the fitting. These listings do not give a length for a formula.
When should a professional take over?
Hand the job over if a steerer or carbon clamp is already crushed, if a bolt is seized beyond the maximum mark, or if a wheel nut will not start on the stud by hand. A torque wrench will not repair a damaged thread. Use the wrench for an ordinary final tighten on a clean fastener.
