Torque wrench for wheel nuts

Updated: October 2026

The car is back on the ground, and the wheel nuts still need a final pull. A torque wrench for wheel nuts is a 1/2 inch click wrench set to your handbook, used in a star or a cross, after the nuts have been started by hand. There is no single UK figure for every passenger car, and an impact gun is the wrong tool for that last stage. The shelf is the [Vanpo torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/vanpo-torque-wrench). Nothing here reaches the roughly 600 Nm goods-vehicle class. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

The figure is in the handbook

Open the handbook for your car, your wheel, and, where it says so, the locking nut. Volvo UK’s V40 page is the public proof that one model is not one number. On that page, one nut and rim combination is 110 Nm, another is 130 Nm, and the locking nut is 110 Nm. Copying 110 Nm onto a different wheel, or onto a different car, is how a UK standard rumour starts. The handbook replaces it. A catalogue band only tells you that you are probably in 1/2 inch territory. If your book says 120 Nm, set 120 Nm on a wrench that includes 120 Nm. If the book is missing, get the figure for that chassis before you pull.

The 1/2 inch rows that can reach it

Four click rows cover a typical passenger-car handbook figure. Vanpo VP01-220 runs 20–220 Nm. ETOOLAB and ATsafepro run 20–230 Nm and are listed at £32.99. SHINTOUR runs 20–240 Nm. A figure of 110 Nm or 130 Nm sits inside all four. The top pick, when the handbook figure is inside 20–220 Nm, is VP01-220 at £27.17. It includes the wrench, a 125 mm extension, and one adapter, and no sockets. You need your own, often 17 mm or 19 mm, sometimes 21 mm. SHINTOUR lists those three sizes and has no review line in the file we used. Every 1/4 inch row stops by 25 Nm, and the 3/8 inch Vanpo rows stop at 60 Nm, so neither can finish this wheel. The window split is in the torque wrench buying guide, and the top pick’s limits are on the best Vanpo torque wrench page.

Order, then stop

Thread every nut by hand until it seats. If a nut will not start on the stud by hand, stop. The stud is cross-threaded, dirty, or damaged. With the nuts hand-tight, lower the car so the tyre is on the ground and the wheel cannot spin. Continental UK describes a star on five studs and a cross on four. Pull each nut to one click, then the opposite nut. The Department for Transport leaflet Careless Torque Costs Lives is written for commercial vehicles. The part that still helps on a driveway is the final stage: a torque wrench at the maker’s figure, not a power tool.

Check again after 30 miles

Continental UK asks you to re-check the nuts after about 30 miles or 50 km. The second check uses the same figure, the same pattern, and a single click. If a nut turns a long way before it clicks, the seating is wrong. The same DfT leaflet, for goods vehicles, says re-tighten after 30 minutes if the vehicle is still standing, or within 25–50 miles if it has been driven. On a passenger car, use the handbook interval when it names one. A commercial fixing around 600 Nm is beyond every wrench here. A wheel that loosened on the road, or a stud that will not start by hand, is a professional job. The wrench is for a clean thread at a known number.

Common questions

Are UK wheel nuts 110 Nm?
Some are, on some nuts. Volvo UK prints 110 Nm for one V40 nut and rim type, 130 Nm for another, and 110 Nm for the locking nut. Another handbook will differ. Set the figure in your own book, on a 1/2 inch wrench that includes it. A forum figure is a prompt to read that book, not a setting.
Which wrench on this shelf can reach a typical car figure?
Vanpo 20–220 Nm, ETOOLAB 20–230 Nm, ATsafepro 20–230 Nm, and SHINTOUR 20–240 Nm can all be set to a handbook figure such as 110 Nm or 130 Nm. The top pick inside 20–220 Nm is the Vanpo if you already have sockets. The 3/8 inch tools stop at 60 Nm and the bike tools by 25 Nm.
In what order do I tighten the nuts?
Run each nut on by hand first. With the tyre on the ground so the wheel cannot spin, use a star on five studs and a cross on four, the pattern Continental UK describes. Pull to one click, then the opposite nut, until each has clicked once.
When do I check them again?
Continental UK says after about 30 miles or 50 km, at the same torque and in the same pattern. The DfT goods-vehicle leaflet says after 30 minutes if the vehicle is still standing, or within 25–50 miles if it has been driven. Use the handbook interval when one is given.
Can I finish with an impact wrench?
Use an impact wrench, if you use one at all, only to free a nut or to run it up before the final stage. The final stage is the torque wrench, set to the handbook and stopped at the click. A gun has no click at 110 Nm.
What if a nut will not start by hand?
Stop, clean the stud, and try again by hand. If it still will not start, the thread is damaged or cross-threaded, and the torque wrench should not force it. Dialling a higher number does not repair a damaged hub.
