Bicycle torque wrench

Updated: October 2026

You are about to tighten a stem, a bar clamp, or a seatpost, and the number on the part is often only a few newton-metres. A bicycle torque wrench for that job is a 1/4 inch click wrench that can show about 5 Nm. A car wrench that starts at 20 Nm cannot, and carbon clamps fail when the bolt is too tight. This page follows that bolt. The shelf is the [Vanpo torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/vanpo-torque-wrench). Read the part, not a forum number

The figure that matters is the one on your stem, bars, or seatpost. Cube’s 2025 carbon sheet, for the models it names, prints 4.5–5 Nm on the stems and 5–6 Nm on the seatposts. MBR often puts stem bolts at 4–5 Nm and pivots around 5–8 Nm. Evans Cycles and Certini sell preset keys at 4, 5, and 6 Nm. A 5 Nm key is the wrong tool for a part marked 6 Nm. Treat a max stamp as a ceiling, and tighten a multi-bolt clamp in steps until each bolt clicks. If the stem says 5 Nm, set 5 Nm on a wrench that can display it.

Why the car wrench is the wrong scale

The Vanpo 1/2 inch row, VP01-220, starts at 20 Nm and runs to 220 Nm. Twenty newton-metres is already about four times a 5 Nm stem bolt. You cannot wind that wrench down to the etching, so any click you hear is a click at 20 Nm or more. That is the region where carbon faceplates crush and threads pull out of a steerer. The other 1/2 inch rows here also start at 20 Nm, and the digital row starts at 17 Nm. A 20% rule of thumb does not rescue it, because the bottom printed mark is already far above the stem. Leave it for the wheel. Which drive belongs to which job is in the torque wrench buying guide.

The four 1/4 inch sets

Four rows can display a bolt around 5 Nm. INGJER runs 3–25 Nm and does not include bits. It is the best-value bike row if you already own 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm hex bits. FOURROBBER runs 2–20 Nm and includes bits. A 5 Nm stem sits inside that scale, and the scale still stops at 20 Nm, short of a cassette. Vanpo’s 1/4 inch wrench, VP001-25Y, runs 1–25 Nm and includes bits. The sample is small and mixed, with two reviews in which a bolt sheared, so set the mark, pull once, and stop, as on the how to use a torque wrench page. AivaToba runs 2–24 Nm, and a cluster of owners say it never clicked. Choose INGJER when you already have bits, and FOURROBBER or the Vanpo 1–25 Nm set when the case must include them.

Bolts this kit cannot do

A cassette lockring is often around 40 Nm, and crank bolts are often quoted from about 34 Nm to 50 Nm. Both sit above the 1/4 inch tools, which stop between 20 Nm and 25 Nm. The two Vanpo 3/8 inch rows, both 5–60 Nm, can show a figure inside that band. They are a poor choice for a 5 Nm stem, down at the bottom of a 60 Nm tool. Pivot bolts around 5–8 Nm can stay on the 1/4 inch wrench when the frame manual’s figure is on the scale. A crashed frame, an oval steerer, or a split clamp is a shop job.

Common questions

What torque is a stem bolt?
It is the figure on your stem or in that bike’s manual. Cube’s 2025 carbon sheet, on the models it covers, uses 4.5–5 Nm for stems and 5–6 Nm for seatposts. None of those is a universal stem torque. If the part says something else, the part wins.
Can I use my 20–220 Nm car wrench on carbon bars?
The scale starts at 20 Nm, and a carbon stem or bar clamp is usually around 5 Nm. You cannot set 5 Nm on that wrench, so the first click you can make is already several times the etching. Use a 1/4 inch wrench whose window includes the number on the part, and stop at one click.
Which of these sets can show 5 Nm?
INGJER at 3–25 Nm, AivaToba at 2–24 Nm, Vanpo VP001-25Y at 1–25 Nm, and FOURROBBER at 2–20 Nm. The 1/2 inch rows start at 20 Nm and the digital row at 17 Nm. Buy INGJER if you already have bits, and skip AivaToba if you need a click.
Do I need the bits in the box?
You need the bit that fits the bolt, whether or not the case supplied it. INGJER includes no bits, so it suits you only if your hex keys fit the wrench. FOURROBBER and the Vanpo 1–25 Nm set include bits. A 5 mm bit in a 4 mm bolt will round the socket long before torque becomes the issue.
What about a cassette or a crank?
A cassette lockring around 40 Nm, and crank bolts often from about 34 Nm to 50 Nm, sit above the 1/4 inch kits here. Use a Vanpo 3/8 inch wrench in the 5–60 Nm window if the maker’s figure is inside it. The stop on the stem wrench is the maximum, not a suggestion to keep pulling.
When should a bike shop take over?
Take a crushed steerer, a cracked clamp, or a crashed frame to a shop. A torque wrench only helps on a clamp that is still intact. Stop as well if the bolt winds in by hand with almost no resistance, which can mean a stripped insert.
