Torque wrench buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a bolt with a number on it, and twelve torque wrenches on amazon.co.uk that look alike until you read the scale. A stem around 5 Nm and a passenger-car wheel nut from the handbook are different jobs. A wrench that starts at 20 Nm cannot show 5 Nm, and a wrench that stops at 25 Nm cannot finish a wheel. This torque wrench buying guide starts with that window, then the drive, then the paper in the box. The twelve-row [Vanpo torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/vanpo-torque-wrench) is the table. Match the newton-metre before the brand

Buy the scale that contains the fastener. The 1/2 inch click wrenches begin at 20 Nm, so a 5 Nm stem is not a mark you can set. The 1/4 inch sets stop between 20 Nm and 25 Nm, so a wheel nut near 110 Nm is off the top of the scale. JCB Tools quotes about 100–130 Nm for a typical passenger-car wheel and still tells you to use the maker’s figure. A spark plug is a third job: the Vanpo 3/8 inch rows can show it only when the engine manual places it inside 5–60 Nm. Undo a seized fastener with a spanner, and reserve the torque wrench for the final tightening.

1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch on this shelf

ISO 6789-1 puts a ceiling on the square itself: about 30 Nm for 1/4 inch, 135 Nm for 3/8 inch, and 340 Nm for 1/2 inch. The 1/4 inch rows are the low window: INGJER 3–25 Nm, AivaToba 2–24 Nm, Vanpo 1–25 Nm, and FOURROBBER 2–20 Nm. The bicycle torque wrench page stays with that job. The two Vanpo 3/8 inch rows both run 5–60 Nm, and they stop short of a car wheel. The 1/2 inch click rows are Vanpo at 20–220 Nm, ETOOLAB and ATsafepro at 20–230 Nm, and SHINTOUR at 20–240 Nm. A handbook figure of 110 Nm sits near the middle of the Vanpo. The car sequence belongs on the torque wrench for wheel nuts page.

What the certificate is

A factory sheet in the case is a declaration that the wrench was checked before it was packed. It is not a UKAS calibration in your name. Norbar’s UKAS-accredited laboratory is a separate service: you send a tool in, and you receive a certificate for that tool. Makers often print the older ISO 6789 pattern, about ±6% at 10 Nm and below and about ±4% above 10 Nm. If a listing here prints ±3%, that is an unmeasured seller’s claim. The declaration also does not cover a setting below about 20% of full scale. How you set and store the wrench is on the how to use a torque wrench page.

Click, digital, or open end

Most rows here are click wrenches. You set a mark, pull smoothly, and stop when the mechanism clicks. GROWNEER is the digital row, 17–340 Nm, with 3.9 from 12 reviews. The bottom still cannot show a 5 Nm stem, and the listing says not to exceed 120% of maximum. The open-end set runs 10–100 Nm and is meant for flare nuts, where a socket will not fit. An open fork used in line with the handle lengthens the lever, and the torque at the fastener changes. A straight extension along the bolt does not.

Common questions

Can one wrench do a carbon stem and a wheel nut?
No single scale on this shelf contains both. A carbon stem is often around 4–6 Nm, and every 1/2 inch row starts at 20 Nm. Every 1/4 inch row stops by 25 Nm. Two windows means two wrenches if you do both jobs.
What does ±3% on the listing mean?
It is a claim printed by that seller, and this page did not verify it on a rig. Factory declarations in this category often follow about ±4% above 10 Nm and about ±6% at 10 Nm or below, the older ISO 6789 pattern. A printed ±3% is tighter than that common band, and it does not replace a UKAS calibration.
Is a factory certificate the same as UKAS?
A factory certificate is the maker’s declaration that the wrench met a standard when it was assembled. UKAS accreditation, such as the service Norbar describes for its laboratory, is a calibration of one particular tool, usually after you send it in. The sheet in a budget case is not that certificate.
Where should the fastener sit on the scale?
As a rule of thumb, use the wrench between about 20% and 100% of its maximum. On the Vanpo 20–220 Nm wrench, 20% is 44 Nm, so a 110 Nm wheel figure is in the working part of the scale. On a 3–25 Nm bike wrench, 20% is 5 Nm, so a 5 Nm stem is at the bottom edge.
Which rows match a bike, a spark plug and a wheel?
A stem or seatpost around 5 Nm belongs on a 1/4 inch row. A spark plug belongs on the Vanpo 5–60 Nm 3/8 inch rows only when the engine manual’s figure is inside that window. A passenger-car wheel nut belongs on a 1/2 inch row from 20–220 Nm to 20–240 Nm, set to that car’s handbook.
When is the open-end set the wrong tool?
Use it for a flare fitting inside 10–100 Nm, where you need the open jaw. Leave it for a hex bolt you can socket, for any stem under 10 Nm, and for a wheel nut above 100 Nm. In line with the handle, the fork changes the lever, so the mark is no longer the torque at the nut.
