Third hand soldering tool: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

The amazon.co.uk title soldering station covers a two-clip magnifier, a four-arm plate, a table clamp, and a jeweller's vice, and the iron is often separate. A third hand soldering tool only has to hold the work so both hands can take the iron and the solder. Choose the job, the base, the jaws, the lens, then the price. The twelve listings, from about £5.99 to about £37.99, are in the [third hand comparison](/hub/hand-tools/third-hand). What a third hand is, and what the listing noise is

A third hand holds the part. The iron stays in your hand. An LCD line or a temperature such as 480 °C belongs to an iron the bullets do not describe. Trust the bullets, not the soldering-station title. The rows are four shapes: two clips and a lens, a four-arm plate, the C100AE clamp at about £12.99 for a top stated as 5–50 mm, and angled tweezers. A finding under a torch belongs on the jewellery third hand page. A board gripped on both edges is a PCB holder, and none of these ASINs is that tool.

Match the job to the shape

Two wires need two clips and a lens you can swing aside. The Mercury MAG01 is that shape at about £5.99, with 4.3 from 1,856 ratings, a 60 mm lens stated at 3×, and a listed weight of 100 g. Once you press on a populated board, 100 g will skate. A small PCB wants a base that stays put. The Nomiou plate is listed at 1.13 kg and about £19.99, with two arms screwed down and two on magnets, 4.6 from 332 ratings, and no lens. Jewellery uses cross-lock tweezers, the Jewellers Tools set at about £11.99. The best helping hands page is the one that commits.

Weight, jaws, and the lens

Read the item-weight line before the title. Mercury says heavy duty and lists 100 g. Nomiou's item weight is 1.13 kg, and a unit-count line says 500 g. Use the item weight. ESR's trade range sits at about £4.99 to £17.36, so about £37.99 is not automatically stiffer. Bare crocodile teeth mark solder mask and polished metal. One UK review of the BEEYUIHF plate says the grippers melted under hot air. Fibre on the tweezers is a grip material, not a firebrick. Take a lens only if you will look through it. Stated powers here are 3× and, on the auryee, 6×. Do not convert them into dioptres. A heavy glass on a soft arm droops.

When to reject the parcel

Missing feet and stripped gooseneck threads are a returns problem. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that do not conform. On the Lytool LED at about £23.99, UK reviewers say the threads will not take the supplied screws. If they will not tighten on day one, reject the parcel. The lamp on that stand is 5 V, not a BS 1363 plug. A third hand does not extract flux fume. The Health and Safety Executive says rosin fume should be extracted, the iron should not be overheated, and your head should stay out of the plume. A lens can pull your face toward the joint. None of these stands is an extractor.

Common questions

What should I check before the price?
Check the job, then the base, then the jaws. Two wires need two clips. A small board needs a heavier plate. Jewellery under a torch needs tweezers. Only then compare about £5.99 with about £19.99. The star line does not tell you the listed weight.
Is heavy duty on the Mercury the same as a cast-iron base?
No. The Mercury title says heavy duty and the item-weight line says 100 g. UK reviewers often steady it with Blu-Tack. A cast-iron stand is a different product. Wentronic's 76560 states both 455 g and 500 g. Use the grams on the listing you are about to buy.
Do I need a magnifier, and is 6× better than 2.5×?
Only if you will look through it. Stated powers here are 3× and, on the auryee, 6×. A higher number is not clearer when a heavy glass droops on a soft arm. Do not convert 3× into dioptres. A headset magnifier can make the stand lens sit in the way.
When are magnetic arms worth it?
When you want to move two clips without unscrewing the feet, on a plate heavy enough to stay put. The Nomiou pattern is two arms screwed down and two on magnets, at 1.13 kg. UK reviews praise the shift and say the magnets could be stronger. Magnets are a poor neighbour for a watch movement.
What if the screws will not tighten?
Treat that as a fault on arrival. UK reviews of the Lytool LED say the gooseneck threads will not take the supplied screws. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that do not conform. Re-tapping a thread is not the setup this guide recommends.
Will any of these extract flux fume?
No. A clip stand holds the work. It does not capture rosin fume. The Health and Safety Executive says to extract that fume and keep your head out of the plume. A magnifier can make you lean in. Wheeze, a tight chest, or a rash is a reason to stop and get medical advice.
