Hose hanger vs hose reel

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing between a hook under £20 and a reel that winds the hose for you, and several titles in the hook set already say reel. A hose hanger versus a hose reel is a choice about whether you will coil by hand. This page stays with that decision. It does not add a reel to the nine hangers, and it does not pick a Hozelock model. The rows are on the [wall hose holders](/hub/garden-watering/wall-hose-holder) comparison. Products Compared read the listings on 16 October 2026. There is no lab comparison of kink or sun. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three different objects

A wall hose holder is a fixed hook or frame. You coil the hose and hang it. A manual reel has a drum and a crank. An auto-rewind reel springs the hose back and usually includes it. A cart is a drum on wheels. Water Irrigation keeps those types apart, and Kärcher UK lists a hanger and crank reels as different products. None of these nine has a drum or a crank. SMARYONG, both Josmimic listings, ZHABAYEN, and HUIQIHANG still put reel in the title. The box is a hook, sometimes a nozzle groove, and a few screws. If a crank, a drum, or a rewind spring is not listed, you will coil the hose yourself. How the titles over-claim is on the garden hose holder buying guide.

When the hanger is the better buy

The hanger set runs from £6.48 to £18.99. You get metal on the wall, no moving parts, and no hose in the box. Water Irrigation calls a hanger the space-saving budget option. That is their general claim. It is not a test of SMARYONG, where one review said the hose creased unless it was fully unwound. A hook is the better buy when coiling takes a minute, the wall will take a proper plug, and you will put the hose away. brackit reviews mention a 30 m Hozelock and a 50 m hose on an open frame, which is still a hand coil. If that chore is acceptable, stay on the main table. The hanger loses when the coil never happens. An empty hook, with the hose in the border, is not tidier than a reel you will use. A hanger is tidier when you coil. A reel is tidier when you will not.

When you should leave

Leave when you want a crank or an auto-rewind and you will not coil. Hozelock’s Auto Reel is sold with 20 m, 30 m, or 40 m of hose and automatic rewind. It is not one of these nine. A 20 m auto-reel sat far above £6.48 to £18.99 on 16 October 2026. This page does not review those models and does not name a best reel. Also leave if the hose is expandable and you were about to wrap it or crank it. Easy Garden Irrigation says that stretches the fabric. A loose hang at the tap is a different action, on the expandable hose wall holder page. A drum sticks out further than a flat hook. On a tight path, a hanger close to the brick can be the one that fits. If the hose is 30 m or more and you water in the dark, buy the crank from a reel listing.

What neither product does

A hanger does not drain the hose, and a reel does not either unless you disconnect first. Which? prefers a reel when the hose would sit in the sun. That is care advice, not a sun test of these nine. None of them includes a double check valve, so hanging the hose is not backflow protection. Before frost, disconnect and drain, on a hook or on a drum. That is WaterSafe’s point. If you will not coil, stop comparing hooks.

Common questions

Is a wall hose holder a hose reel?
Not here. A holder is a hook you coil by hand. A reel has a drum and a crank, or an auto-rewind. Five titles say reel and still ship a hook. If the box has no drum, you roll the hose yourself.
When is a hook enough?
When you will coil, the wall takes a proper plug, and you want a price inside £6.48 to £18.99. A short run to a few pots is the usual case. It fails when the hose stays on the ground because you skip the coil.
When should you buy a crank or an auto-rewind?
When you will not coil, or when only a drum will be used. A Hozelock auto-reel with hose included sat far above this band on 16 October 2026. This page does not pick the reel. It says when to leave the hangers.
Why do amazon titles say reel?
The search term is popular and the product is still a hanger. SMARYONG at £8.28 has 1,192 reviews, a 150 ft title, and no crank. Calling it a reel disappoints you when the hose is still in your hands. Check the components line.
Does a hanger drain the hose the way a reel might?
Neither drains it alone. You disconnect, let the water leave, and avoid a stored kink. Which? prefers a reel for sun as care advice, not as a test of these brackets. A shaded hook is still a hook you have to coil.
How do the prices compare, without a fake ranking?
These hangers are £6.48 to £18.99. Primrose showed roughly £128 to £181 for a 20 m Hozelock auto-reel on 16 October 2026, with more than one price on the page, so quote the band. No reel is scored against these hooks.
Can you wrap an expandable hose on either?
Easy Garden Irrigation says no. Cranking or tight wrapping can stretch the fabric. A loose hang over the tap is a different method, on its own page. This comparison is not permission to wind a fabric hose onto a drum.
