How to fit a hose holder

Updated: October 2026

The bracket is in the box, the drill is on the patio, and the easy mark is the mortar joint under the tap. That joint is the wrong place. This is how to fit a hose holder you have already chosen, on UK brick or render, with the fixings these listings supply. The rows are on the [wall hose holders](/hub/garden-watering/wall-hose-holder) comparison. Products Compared read the listings on 16 October 2026. There is no pull-out test. Check the wall before the drill

Sound brick or block is the anchor. Mortar is not. Toolstation’s brick guide is to drill the centre of the brick, not the joint. A page that says drill the mortar because it is easier is the advice to reject. You cannot drive a screw straight into brick. You drill, you plug, then you screw. Render is a coat, not a structure. The fixing has to pass through render into sound brick or block, and external wall insulation needs a specialist. Blown render, a hollow sound, or insulation you cannot see past are reasons to stop. Run a detector for pipes and cables. A bracket beside an outdoor tap is where a pipe is likely. If you cannot find the stopcock, or you do not trust the detector, that is a job for someone who does this for a living. What to buy is on the garden hose holder buying guide.

Mark, bit, and plug

Hold the bracket where the coil can hang without kinking on the tap, and mark through the holes in the metal. Level the marks. GARTOL’s two keyholes sit proud of an overlapping fence panel if you do not pack them. Match the bit to the plug in your hand. Drill on hammer action into the brick, slightly deeper than the plug, and clear the dust before you seat it. The screw has to run the length of the plug and still pass through the bracket. A short screw that only bites the mouth of the plug lets go when the hose is full of water. There is no single bit size here. If the sheet and the plug disagree, drill for the plug. Do not copy a bit size from a reel article about a different bracket.

What arrived in these boxes

Treat brackit’s 3 cm screws as a starter you will probably replace. One snapped and left the head in the plug, and one order arrived with none. GARTOL lists screws and expansion bolts, and one parcel had no screws. SMARYONG supplies two drywall anchors, which are for plasterboard, not exterior brick. The Josmimic alloy bullet says three stainless screws and three concrete anchors. The components line says two screws and two drywall anchors. Count the holes, then buy screws for them. Ghligna and HUIQIHANG supply screws and do not state plugs. If you are only hanging Navoys on the tap, stop drilling and use the expandable hose wall holder page.

Height and the tap

No listing gives a height in millimetres. Do not borrow a reel brand’s 850 mm to 1 m. brackit’s hung high is the condition on its 50 m claim, not a mark for your wall. Put the hook where you can lift the coil, and where the hose leaves the tap in a wide curve.

When to stop

Stop for blown render, external insulation, a pipe or cable you cannot trace, or water you cannot isolate. A longer screw does not fix a soft wall. None of these nine includes a double check valve. Before frost, disconnect and drain. If you still want a crank, decide that before the plugs go in.

Common questions

Do you drill the brick or the mortar?
Drill the brick face, not the joint. The plug needs solid material. Mortar is easier and weaker, which is why a US how-to prefers it and UK fixing guides do not. If the mark lands in the joint, move it onto the brick.
Can you use the screws in the packet?
Often not, outside. brackit’s 3 cm screws are the ones reviews discard. GARTOL reviewers fit 5 cm or No 8 by 1 1/2 inch screws. If the screw does not pass through the plug and the bracket, it is too short. A snapped head left in a plug means a new hole.
Are drywall anchors right for an outside wall?
No. SMARYONG’s anchors are the clear case. They suit plasterboard. Exterior brick needs a masonry plug and a matching screw. Where a listing mentions both drywall anchors and concrete anchors, fit the wall you have. A wet hose will pull a plasterboard anchor out of brick.
What if the wall is rendered?
The fixing must reach sound brick or block behind the render. Render is not load-bearing. Blown render or external insulation is a specialist job. A light hook still carries a hose full of water, and packet plugs do not replace sound masonry.
How high should the holder go?
These listings do not say. Hung high on brackit belongs to the 50 m claim and is not a measured height. Place the hook so you can lift the coil and the hose does not kink at the tap. Do not copy 850 mm from a reel bracket.
What size masonry bit matches the plug?
The bit matches the plug in your hand. SS304 reviews use 8 mm. The alloy sheet says 6 mm, and one plug measured 8 mm. There is no universal size for brackit or GARTOL. Drill slightly deeper than the plug, clear the dust, and seat it fully.
When should you stop and call someone?
For blown render, external insulation, a suspected pipe or cable, or water you cannot isolate. Also stop if a snapped screw sits beside a live pipe. The job is small only while the wall is sound, and the hook does not add a check valve.
