How to connect a Gardena hose to a tap

Updated: 22 October 2026

The hose has arrived, the outside tap is on the wall, and nothing clicks. Connecting a Gardena hose to a tap, on these seven amazon.co.uk listings, means buying two fittings the carton does not include, cutting a crushed end square, and keeping the open end out of a butt or a pond. The seven rows sit on the [Gardena hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/gardena-hose). Peter F. used the stored amazon.co.uk scope lines on 21 October 2026, Gardena’s UK pages for the Premium tap connector and the 13 mm hose connector, and Water Regs UK on hose union taps. These seven listings do not include the connector

The photograph often shows a grey connector. The bullet does not. On every kept row the scope line is the hose. The Comfort Flex 10 m title says without parts. HighFLEX included lines name one hose. Liano included lines name one textile hose. SuperFLEX reviews say the connector in the picture was missing when the box was opened. Original system parts can be added afterwards. They are not a hidden extra in these parcels. Power Grip is the rib on Comfort Flex, HighFLEX and SuperFLEX so an Original connector can grip. It is not stated on the Liano bullets, and it is not a tap fitting. You still buy the pieces that join hose to tap. If family and length are still open, start with the Gardena hose buying guide.

A usual UK tap wants a G 3/4 inch tap connector

A typical British outside tap is a male G 3/4 inch thread, which Gardena lists as 26.5 mm. The Premium tap connector, article 18241-20, screws onto that thread and then takes an Original system hose fitting. Gardena states a five-year warranty after registration on that fitting, separate from the hose listing. Match the thread you can see. A 1/2 inch tap, or a mixer spout, needs the connector that fits it. The hose end wants a 13 mm (1/2 inch) connector. Gardena’s UK connector set covers 13 mm and 15 mm. UK dealers list article 18215-20 at about £5 to £6.50, a shop range and not one of the seven hose prices. These hoses are all 13 mm bore, including the Liano rows sold as 1/2 inch. Seat the washer and tighten the nut by hand. Pliers on a plastic nut strip the thread. The micro-drip fitting 13222 is not the garden-hose connector for these reels.

Cut a crushed end square before you tighten the nut

Retail coils often arrive with the last few centimetres oval, or with a pressed end that will not enter the connector. One review on the 10 m Comfort Flex said both ends had to be cut before the fittings would go on. Cut square, so the end sits in the connector and the washer can seal. Take off only the damaged bit. A slanted cut leaks even when the tap connector is the right thread. If the end is split, cut again until the bore is round, then open the tap slowly. The 20 m HighFLEX title says 20 m while an item-length field says 200 centimetres. That clash does not change the cut. Confirm the live title, article 18063-20, before you assume the hose is 20 m. The 15 m Liano, article 18445-20, collides with a Gardena set page. If the live bullet still says one hose, fit it as a hose. That clash is explained on Liano Life or a spiral Gardena hose.

Do not leave the hose in a butt or pond

Water Regs UK warns that a hose union tap can allow backflow if the hose end can sit in a container of water. A water butt, a pond, a bucket of feed, or a paddling pool is that situation. Hang the end on the reel, or on a hook above the stored water, when you finish. Hold the end clear while you fill a butt. Scotland uses water byelaws rather than the English and Welsh regulations, so the wording can differ. Keep the open end out of stored water. Call a plumber for a new outside tap, for moved pipework, or if the tap weeps before any hose is fitted. On a sound 3/4 inch bib, the two Gardena pieces are a hand-tight job. Open the tap barely and look for a drip.

Common questions

What extra parts does a 13 mm Gardena hose need on a typical UK tap?
You need a tap connector for the thread on the wall, and a hose connector for the 13 mm end. Gardena’s premium example for a G 3/4 inch tap is article 18241-20, listed as 26.5 mm. The hose piece is a 13 mm connector such as 18215-20, or the 13–15 mm set. Hand tight, with the washer seated. None of the seven hose bullets includes those parts.
Is every UK outside tap 3/4 inch BSP?
A usual outside bib tap is G 3/4 inch, and that is the thread 18241-20 is made for. Some taps are smaller, and some spouts are part of a mixer. Look at the thread before you order. If it is not 3/4 inch, buy the connector that matches it. Forcing a 3/4 inch piece onto the wrong thread will cross-thread and leak.
What is Power Grip doing if the hose still needs a connector?
Power Grip is the rib moulded into Comfort Flex, HighFLEX and SuperFLEX so an Original hose connector can grip. It is named on those bullets and not on the Liano bullets. It does not screw onto the tap, and it does not replace article 18215-20 or the tap connector. You still buy both fittings for a hose-only carton.
The end is oval. Can I cut it?
Yes. Cut the crushed or pressed end square so the bore is round and the connector can seat on a flat face. One Comfort Flex review cut both ends before the nuts would fit. Remove the damaged section only. A long diagonal cut will weep at the washer even when the tap piece is correct. Then open the tap slowly and look for a drip.
The 15 m Liano says the package may vary. Do the steps change?
The included line still says one 15 m hose, with a 2-year manufacturer warranty on the listing. Fit it as a hose-only product unless the carton you open actually contains connectors. Gardena’s page for article 18445-20 describes a set, so read the live bullet. The square cut and the backflow warning still apply to the hose end.
When do I stop and call a plumber?
Call a plumber if you need a new outside tap, if you are altering pipework, or if the tap leaks before any hose is fitted. Screwing on 18241-20 and a 13 mm connector, on a sound existing bib tap, is the job these steps cover. Pliers on a plastic nut, and a hose left under water, are the two mistakes worth avoiding first.
