Hose to empty a pond

Updated: 22 October 2026

The pond, the paddling pool, or the hot tub is full, and you need a hose to empty a pond without the flow dying halfway across the lawn. A 25 mm bore shows up because many small pump outlets are that size. We used amazon.co.uk listings and public UK pages on hosepipe bans, and we did not run a lab test. Which listing fits a straight or a short run is on the [best 1 inch garden hose](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch/sub/garden-hose-1-inch-best) page. The seven products are on the [1 inch garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch).

What you are emptying

A paddling pool, a hot tub, a water butt, and a small pond are different volumes, and the outlet is not always 25 mm. Measure from the pump to the point you are allowed to release the water, and add a little slack. A 5 m title is not a promise that it reaches. If the pump outlet is not 25 mm, the hose in the title will not fix it. A 19 mm or 32 mm stub needs a hose or a tail of that size. Forcing a 25 mm layflat onto the wrong stub splits the end. Measuring the stub and seating a clip is how to connect a 25 mm hose.

Keep the hose open

On a level run, layflat is flat in the bag and open when the pump pushes. Keep it straight. A crease at the pump, a fold on a slope, or a bend at the patio edge is the failure in the reviews. More pump speed does not heal a shut crease. If the route has to bend, and you are pushing rather than sucking, HOSES UK's corrugated pond hose is the shape in this set sold to bend. Do not put layflat on the suction side. The shape contrast is layflat hose vs reinforced hose.

Bans and backflow

A hosepipe ban and a pump on stored water are different rules. Ofwat's note describes typical temporary use restrictions and a penalty figure of £1,000. Thames Water's page, updated on 12 October 2026, restricts a mains hosepipe for pools and hot tubs and still describes water butts as allowed. Check the company on your bill. Pumping out water already in the tub is not the same act as filling it from the mains. If a hose on a mains tap is left with its open end in the pond, pool, or butt, dirty water can be drawn back. Schedule 2 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is the frame. Do not leave the hose submerged while it is on the tap.

Which listing fits this job

For a straight 10 m discharge, the top pick is the 10 m KATSU at £12.99, and only if the run stays straight. For a short flat run, the best value is the 5 m Equip247uk at £9.95. For a filter hose that must bend, HOSES UK at £11.75 is the shape buyers use. Ask the water company before you send treated hot-tub water or a green pond into a gutter. A hose that reaches the road is not evidence that the drain is allowed.

Common questions

Why does the flow stop halfway across the lawn?
The usual cause in these reviews is a crease: at the pump outlet, on a slope, or over a patio edge. Layflat shuts when it folds. Straighten that section and run the pump again. If the hose is on the suction inlet of a surface pump, it will stay shut because it is not a suction hose. Clip faults are a separate leak, not a stop in the middle of the lawn.
The pump outlet is not 25 mm. What then?
Do not force this hose onto it. Measure the stub. A 25 mm title matches a 25 mm tail. A larger or smaller outlet needs a matching hose or a proper adaptor, not a jubilee clip over a gap. The fitting steps, including where the clip sits behind a bead, are on the how-to page. Starting the pump to stretch a tight end splits the wall.
Can I run the hose over the patio edge?
You can route it there only if the wall stays open. Layflat reviews describe flow stopping on a bend and on an incline, and a patio edge is that bend. A slab on top of the hose makes the crease permanent. Use a straight layflat run, or a corrugated pond hose if the filter pipe must turn, and do not stand on the line while the pump is running.
Is emptying a hot tub banned during a hosepipe ban?
A temporary use ban restricts the mains uses your company lists. Thames Water's page of 12 October 2026 restricts a mains hosepipe for pools and hot tubs, and it is one company's page, not a UK-wide order. Pumping out water that is already in the tub is not the same as filling the tub from the mains. Refilling from the tap can be the banned use. Check the company on your bill. Ofwat cites a typical £1,000 penalty for breaches.
Is rainwater in a butt treated the same as the mains?
No. A ban page that still allows water butts, as Thames Water's does, is talking about water you are not taking from the mains at that moment. A pump and a 25 mm hose on a butt are a stored-water job. Topping the butt up from the outside tap during a ban can fall back under the mains rule. The hose does not change which water you are using.
Should a fish pond be filled through one of these hoses?
Do not fill a fish pond, or a pet bowl, through these PVC hoses and treat the water as drinking water. Hozelock's use note says that plainly for PVC garden hose. The AP Automotive title includes the word food and shows no WRAS line in the saved listing. Emptying dirty water out of a pond is a different job from filling one for fish. Use a hose that is actually approved if you need drinking water.
