Layflat hose vs reinforced hose

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a flat blue coil and a round 25 mm tube. Layflat hose vs reinforced hose is a route decision: the hose has to stay open from the pump to the drain, not merely store in a bucket. We compared the shapes in a seven-listing set, with no lab test. Prices and scores are on the [1 inch garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch). If 25 mm is not settled yet, the [25mm garden hose buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch/sub/garden-hose-1-inch-buying-guide) comes before this contrast.

What layflat is built to do

Layflat in this set is blue PVC that collapses for storage and opens when the pump pushes: the KATSU, Equip247uk, and Meksular lengths, from £9.95 to £19.99. Flood Protection Solutions, writing about their own 25 mm layflat, give 4 bar working and mark it delivery only. That figure is not a test of the KATSU field. Use it on a level, straight run. It stores as a flat strap, and it does not hold a bore while it is empty. BS EN ISO 1403 is a rubber-hose standard, and collapsible hose sits outside its scope. A burst number on a bullet does not licence a corner.

What a round 25 mm hose in this set can do

Round here is not one product. HOSES UK's black corrugated pond hose, £11.75 for a stated 5 m and 25 mm internal diameter, is sold to bend. It is 4.5 from 95 reviews, hose only, and one reviewer found two splits while fitting it. There is no pressure figure. AP Automotive's clear braided tube is the other round wall, £19.95 for a stated 5 m. The wall field is 4 mm and the outside-diameter field is 29 mm. The maximum-pressure field says 13.5 bars. Two reviews say the 5 m length arrived short. Fittings are not listed. Neither hose stores as a flat strap. Clip placement is how to connect a 25 mm hose.

The hose this set does not contain

Trade pages often compare layflat with a spiral suction-and-delivery hose. Flood Protection Solutions put suction hose on uphill runs, stairs, corners, burial, and any pump inlet. This amazon.co.uk set does not contain that spiral hose. HOSES UK can bend on a filter run. A rib is not a wire helix. The clear tube is round and braided, and a 13.5 bar field does not make it suction-rated. Layflat will not hold a bore on a pump inlet. When you need both a bend and suction, leave the category. Buy a suction-and-delivery hose matched to the inlet. A £22 example on a supplier page is that shop's price, not an amazon.co.uk listing here. The outlet side can still be layflat if the water is only being pushed away on the flat.

A conditional pick

Choose layflat if the run is level and straight and the pump is pushing. The 5 m Equip247uk is the cheap end of this set. If the lawn has a patio edge halfway, layflat flows on the grass and stops on the step. Choose the HOSES UK pond hose if the run must bend, you are not sucking, and 5 m is enough. You supply the clips. Choose the clear tube if you want a braided round wall you will measure on arrival. Leave all three if the inlet must pull or the route climbs stairs. For the pond or hot-tub job, use a hose to empty a pond.

Common questions

Why does a flat hose flow on the lawn and stop on a step?
Layflat stays open when pressure can round the wall along a straight run. A step or a slow bend creases it, and the crease closes the bore. Reviews on the Equip247uk, KATSU, and Meksular listings describe that stop. Straighten the hose or move the pump so the run does not climb. A larger burst figure on the bullet does not hold the crease open.
Can layflat suck water into a pump?
No. These layflat listings are discharge hose. On a pump inlet they collapse, because nothing holds the bore when the pressure outside is higher than the pressure inside. Flood Protection Solutions mark their own 25 mm layflat as delivery only. Use a suction-rated hose on the inlet. You can still use layflat on the outlet if that side is a straight push.
Is the black pond hose the kink-resistant choice in this set?
Yes, among these seven, if the job is a bend on a pond pump, a filter, or a water butt and you are not sucking. HOSES UK's corrugated 25 mm hose is sold for that bend. It is £11.75 for a stated 5 m, hose only, with no pressure figure. One review reports two splits during fitting, so bends does not mean the wall cannot be damaged by a bad clip.
Is the clear tube a suction hose because it is round and says 13.5 bars?
No. AP Automotive's clear tube is braided PVC with 13.5 bars in the maximum-pressure field. Round and braided is not the same as a spiral suction hose. One review reports a split under 10 bar, and two say the stated 5 m arrived short. Do not put it on a pump inlet and call it suction-rated. The food word in the title is not a drinking-water approval either.
What should I buy if I need both a bend and suction?
Leave this set. You need a suction-and-delivery hose for the inlet, sized to the pump, and you may still use layflat only on a straight outlet afterwards. The corrugated pond hose bends and is not sold for suction. The clear tube is not a suction hose because it is round. A supplier suction hose at about £22 is that shop's product, not one of these ASINs.
