How to connect a 25mm hose

Updated: 22 October 2026

The hose or the pump is already in the house, and the leak you are trying to avoid is usually a thread that was never 25 mm, or a clip that bit through a soft flat wall. How to connect a 25mm hose starts with a ruler, then a straight outlet, then a jubilee clip behind the bead. We did not pressure-test these amazon.co.uk listings. If you are still choosing the hose, use the [25mm garden hose buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch/sub/garden-hose-1-inch-buying-guide) first. The seven listings are on the [1 inch garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/garden-hose-1-inch).

Measure the outlet before the hose

Measure the metal you will join to, not the number in the hose title. For an outside tap, lay a ruler across the threads. Hozelock's guide puts 3/4 inch BSP at about 26.44 mm across and 1 inch BSP at about 33.25 mm. A 25 mm hose bore is the hole inside the hose. It is not either of those thread diameters. A reading near 26 mm is 3/4 inch BSP, and it needs a 3/4 inch connector on a smaller garden hose. Forcing layflat onto that thread splits the end. A pump outlet is the usual place this hose belongs. If the stub is 32 mm or 19 mm, do not start the pump to stretch it on.

Clip a layflat onto a pump

Unroll the hose in a straight line. Push it fully onto the stub, past the raised bead, and place the clip behind that bead. A clip on the bead walks off when the pump starts. Tighten until the joint stops weeping. If the wall is already cutting, more turns make a hole. Equip247uk titles name one clip. KATSU and Meksular bullets name two, and HOSES UK says hose only. A bullet is not a clip in the carton. If the route cannot stay straight, that is layflat hose vs reinforced hose, not another turn of the screwdriver.

When the wall stays shut or the clip bites

Layflat is flat in the bag. It is meant to round out when water pressure fills it. If the hose stays shut when the pump starts, check that the pump is pushing and that a kink is not closing the first metre. Do not use these layflat listings on the inlet of a surface pump. They are discharge hose, and none of the seven is sold as a spiral suction hose. A jubilee tail that digs into the flat wall is a known review fault. Turn the clip so the tail does not point into the hose.

Where a professional takes over

Stop when the joint is on the mains, not when a pump is moving water that is already in a tub. Schedule 2 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is the backflow frame. If you are fitting a new outside tap, or the hose will sit in dirty water and you cannot see a check valve, that is a plumber's job. Do not leave the open end submerged while the other end is on the tap. A matching pump outlet on a straight run is still your fitting job. Call someone when the outlet thread is damaged, when the pump is hard-wired and you are not competent at the electrics, or when the hose must pass through a wall. The route for emptying a pond is a hose to empty a pond. After the job, drain the hose before you roll it.

Common questions

How do I measure the tap before I buy a connector?
Lay a ruler across the threads, not along the spout. About 26.44 mm is 3/4 inch BSP on Hozelock's guide, which is the common UK outside tap. About 33.25 mm is 1 inch BSP. Count the threads if you are unsure: a 1 inch BSP male is about 11 threads per inch on the UK Flow Centre table. Buy the connector for that thread and for the hose bore, which is a separate size.
Does a 25 mm hose push onto a 3/4 inch BSP tap?
No. A 3/4 inch BSP thread is about 26 mm across the metal, and a 25 mm hose is the internal hole of the hose. They do not mate. Most house taps need a 3/4 inch connector on a 12.5 mm garden hose. Use a 25 mm tail on a pump stub or a fitting that is actually 25 mm.
Where does the jubilee clip sit?
Push the hose fully onto the outlet stub so it passes the raised bead, then place the clip behind that bead, on hose that is supported by the stub. A clip sitting on the bead walks off when the pump starts. Tighten until a test run does not weep. There is no published torque for these 25 mm layflat listings.
What if the clip tail cuts the flat hose?
Stop tightening. Reviews on these layflat hoses describe a jubilee tail that crimps the wall. Turn the clip so the tail does not dig into the PVC, and keep the clip on the reinforced part over the stub. If the wall is already split, cut back to sound hose, if you still have length, or replace the end. More turns enlarge the cut.
The hose stays flat when the pump starts. What now?
Layflat opens under discharge pressure, and only if the run is not creased. Straighten the first metre, check the pump is pushing, and do not force the hose around a corner to make it look fitted. If you have put layflat on the suction inlet, it will stay shut. That side needs a hose sold to hold suction, which is not this set.
What if the clips were not in the box?
Treat the bullet as a claim. KATSU and Meksular say two clips, Equip247uk names one in the title, and HOSES UK says hose only. A shared KATSU review says no fitting arrived, and a Meksular review says the clamp was missing. Buy a jubilee clip that fits the stub and fit it behind the bead. Do not run the joint without one.
