Expandable hose vs normal hosepipe

Updated: 22 October 2026

The hose either lives in a cupboard by the back door or on a reel you drag across the patio. You are weighing an expandable hose vs normal hosepipe because one of those has already annoyed you, and you need a clear choice. A small UK garden you can keep clear of thorns can live with the expandable type. Roses, gravel, or a spray gun you already own point the other way. Prices for the twelve expandable listings sit on the [flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose). Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk pages on 20 October 2026. What you gain with an expandable hose

The gain is the empty hose, not the hose once the tap is open. In this set the light rows are about 658 g to 750 g, which covers BOANKODU, HOMOZE and CLMCL, and the heavy rows are about 2.1 kg to 2.25 kg for the KETTOYA and the Flexi Hose 100 ft. That is the credit BBC Gardeners’ World gives the type: it stores small. Which? adds that a regular reinforced hose kinks, and that a reel is a nuisance to wind. An expandable sleeve is sold as the hose you do not fight back onto a drum. That advantage holds while the hose is empty and the route is kind. DIY Gardening notes that a long expandable hose gets heavy once it is full, so a 100 ft title that felt like a shopping bag in the hall is a different object on the lawn. “Less kink” is not a kink-free hose, and Which? says expandable hoses snag. If your walk is a straight path from a balcony tap to a row of pots, the weight saving is the point of the category.

What you give up

You give up a wall you can drag. The core is a thin latex or rubber tube inside a woven jacket, and the jacket is not armour. An expandable vs rubber hose comparison, in the words Gardeners’ World actually uses, is that expandable hoses leak or split more readily than tougher rubber. Gardeners’ World and DIY Gardening both tell you to keep this type off a pressure-washer lance, and DIY Gardening adds thorns. Which? puts regular reinforced hoses ahead on durability, and it says expandable hoses should come indoors in winter. The amazon.co.uk reviews we read match that caution as stories, not as a rate. In the Flexi Hose sample, one owner described holes by a third summer. The BABADU and ANSYU samples include bursts within a year. A sprinkler is a separate disappointment: without a valve that holds pressure in the tube, DIY Gardening says the hose can shrink while the sprinkler runs. If the border is roses or bramble, a reinforced hose on a reel is the tool that still makes sense, even though you will wind it.

Fittings decide it as much as the tube

A hose you cannot join to the gun you already own is the wrong hose, even if the tube lasts. Hozelock click fittings are a system, and the collars in this set are not automatically part of it. One Flexi Hose review in the sample we read described a plastic connector snapping, after which the buyer gave up and bought a Hozelock hose. ABS collars on BABADU and ANSYU are the plastic end of this set. Brass, where a listing actually says brass, takes a washer more patiently. Brass is still not a promise that the thread is a UK one. Hozelock Superhoze is easy to misread as the ordinary Hozelock hose. It is an expandable hose with that brand’s fittings, and it is not in these twelve listings. Garden4Less showed a Superhoze 30 m at £64.99, and Amazon’s own Superhoze page had no featured offer when we checked. Tuffhoze is the other name that muddies the types: it is a non-expanding hybrid, not the sleeve that grows when you open the tap. Thread and the US-tap sentence on two Flexi Hose lengths are on the garden hose tap connector UK page.

A conditional recommendation

Choose the expandable hose for a balcony, a courtyard or a short path you can keep clear of thorns, and store the empty hose indoors. You may have to replace it. If you are asking whether expandable hoses are any good in a UK garden, that is the case where the answer is yes, with that limit. Length and pressure then sit on the expandable garden hose buying guide. On the hose reel or expandable choice, take the reel when the route crosses roses, bramble or gravel, when you already own click fittings, or when the hose must stay out through a British winter. Winding it is a nuisance, which Gardeners’ World states plainly, and Which? still puts the reinforced hose ahead on durability. Do not use an expandable listing as the outlet hose of a pressure washer. If the expandable hose is the wrong tool, leave this category.

Common questions

When is an expandable hose the right tool?
It is the right tool for a small space and light watering, where the empty hose has to live in a bag or a cupboard. In this set that empty weight runs from about 658 g to about 2.25 kg. You should be able to keep the jacket off thorns and bring the hose indoors in winter, which is the care note Which? gives this type. It is the wrong tool if you need a hose you can drag across a rough border and expect it to stay sound.
When is a reinforced hose on a reel the right tool?
A reinforced hose on a reel is the right tool when the path is gravel, roses or bramble, or when you already own a spray gun you intend to keep. Which? says regular reinforced hoses are generally more durable than expandable ones, though they kink, and a reel is how you store that heavier pipe. Gardeners’ World calls the winding a nuisance. That nuisance is still the better bargain if the route is rough enough to hole a thin core.
Do expandable hoses kink?
They kink less often than a cheap rubber pipe, in the way DIY Gardening describes, and they are not kink-free. Which? says expandable hoses snag, which is a different snarl from a fold in a reinforced wall. A hose left full in the sun, or pulled around a corner while it is only partly filled, will still fold. Treat “kink-free” on a title as a claim on the listing, not as a result we measured.
Will an expandable hose survive rose thorns?
An expandable hose for roses is the wrong brief. DIY Gardening treats thorns as a reason the thin core fails, and Gardeners’ World says this type splits more readily than tougher rubber. A woven jacket takes a scuff on a patio. It is not a substitute for a reinforced wall if the hose has to lie in a border. If that is the garden, use a normal hosepipe and keep the expandable sleeve for pots on a clear path.
Can you keep your existing spray gun?
Only if the collar on the new hose matches the gun. A Hozelock click gun does not automatically fit the connectors in this set. One Flexi Hose review described a plastic connector snapping, and that buyer then bought a Hozelock hose. KETTOYA states that a sprinkler needs a separate female quick connector, so the gun in the box is not a universal outlet. Check the fitting before you assume the old gun comes across.
Is a Hozelock Superhoze a normal hose?
No. Superhoze is an expandable hose that uses Hozelock fittings. It is not one of the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our comparison, and it is not a reinforced hose on a reel. Garden4Less listed a 30 m Superhoze at £64.99. Amazon’s Superhoze page had no featured offer on the day we checked. Where Hozelock offers a guarantee on that hose, it belongs to that product. It is not a score we can give the hoses in this set.
