Expandable garden hose buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

The outside tap is on the back wall and the furthest pot sits past a corner. A listing that prints 100 ft looks long enough until the hose only grows part of the way. This expandable garden hose buying guide is the check you do before any league table: what the length on the title means, what pressure a UK outside tap can give, and whether the fittings can meet the thread on the wall. Prices and the named top pick stay on our [flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose). Peter F. read the twelve amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026. What the length on the title means

The number on the box is the expanded length, the hose after water has pushed the core out. It is not the coil you lift out of the bag. BOANKODU is the only listing here that states both ends in one breath: 17 ft relaxed, 25 ft expanded, at £16.99. A blanket “about three times” is a rule of thumb from UK buyer notes, and it is not a promise printed on every hose. Those notes often add about 20 percent of path for corners. BBC Gardeners’ World puts the same idea in practical terms: measure from the tap, then add slack. A 12 m walk from the tap to the last pot, plus a corner around a water butt, is closer to 15 m. A 50 ft title is about 15.2 m, so that route has almost no spare once the hose is fully out. HOMOZE shows why you should not collapse three fields into one reach: the title says 50 ft, the dimensions say 15.24 m, and the item-length field says 30 m. Measure the garden yourself and treat the conflicting line as a reason to read the listing twice.

Pressure on a UK outside tap

Ofwat’s guaranteed-standards floor is 0.7 bar in the communication pipe. That figure is not the pressure you feel at the nozzle while the hose is running. Typical static readings at a mains outside tap are described around 2–4 bar. One buyer-guide site uses 4–7 bar. That higher band is that site’s figure, and it should not be copied onto every UK house. AYZ is the clearest pressure note in this set. The listing says the hose expands at 3–6 bar, and the technical table also says 12 bar maximum. If your tap sits nearer 2 bar, a 100 ft title can stay short of the far bed. A 12 bar claim, which Flexi Hose and AYZ both print, is a stated maximum. It does not tell you the hose will reach its title length at the pressure you have. BABADU’s pressure field says 60,000 pascal. Converted, that is 0.6 bar, so it is not a strength claim you can lean on. If the tap is already slow with an ordinary hosepipe, buy the expanded length you can reach at that pressure, or look at a reinforced hose on the expandable hose vs normal hosepipe page. A longer expandable hose does not create pressure the supply does not have.

Fittings, jacket, and what is in the box

The joint fails more often than the story on the box. Brass is the collar UK buyer guides prefer, because it takes a washer and a clumsy start on the thread more patiently than a thin plastic collar, though brass can still be the wrong thread. Several listings here state both a 1/2 inch and a 3/4 inch connector, including AYZ in brass and HOMOZE without calling the metal brass. Flexi Hose states 3/4 inch brass only, and the bullets point those connectors at typical US taps. “Brass” and “3/4 inch” are not the same sentence as a UK BSP thread. Thread, washers, and that US line are on the garden hose tap connector UK page. A storage bag or a hanger makes the shed tidier and does not thicken a thin latex core. An 8-pattern or 10-pattern gun helps with pots and a hard path. It does not keep the hose long if you clip on a sprinkler and there is no valve to hold pressure in the tube. DIY Gardening’s note is the practical one: without an inline shut-off, the hose can shrink while the sprinkler runs. Layer counts such as “four latex layers” or “3750D” are claims on the listing. We did not cut a hose open to count them.

What to leave this hose for

This type is a light watering hose for a path you can keep clear. None of these listings is sold as drinking water, and none shows a WRAS approval line. A pressure-washer outlet is a different duty from a garden tap: BBC Gardeners’ World and DIY Gardening both steer expandable hoses away from that connection. Rose thorns, brambles and a drag across gravel are the third miss. Expandable hoses store small, and they split more readily than a tougher rubber hose, which is Gardeners’ World’s trade-off in one line. If the route crosses a thorny border, or you already own click fittings you want to keep, a reinforced hose on a reel is the better buy even though winding it is a nuisance. Fill, drain and winter storage are on how to use an expandable garden hose.

Common questions

Is the length on the box the length in the shed?
The title length is the expanded length, after the tap has filled the hose. The coil in the bag is the short state. BOANKODU states that gap as 17 ft relaxed and 25 ft expanded. Other rows often print only the long number. HOMOZE prints 50 ft, 15.24 m and 30 m in different fields, so those three cannot be averaged into one reach you can trust.
How much extra should you allow for corners?
Measure the walk from the tap, then add slack for every corner and for the loop you need at the bed. A common UK buyer note is about 20 percent extra path. That is a rule of thumb, not a standard. A 12 m run with one corner around a water butt can use almost all of a 50 ft hose, about 15.2 m, once it is fully expanded.
What if the outside tap is on the weak side?
You may never see the title length. Ofwat’s 0.7 bar floor is the communication-pipe minimum, not the pressure at a running nozzle. Static pressure at many mains taps is described around 2–4 bar. AYZ says its hose expands at 3–6 bar. If the tap is already feeble, a longer box does not repair the supply.
Are brass fittings better than plastic?
Brass is the sturdier collar in buyer guides, and it still has to match the tap thread and sit on a washer. Plastic connectors, such as the ABS fittings on BABADU and ANSYU, are lighter, and they are the part reviewers often blame when a joint snaps. Brass is not proof of a UK BSP thread. That check sits on the fittings page.
Does a 10-pattern gun matter?
It matters for how you water pots, seed and a hard patio, and it matters very little for whether the hose reaches the end of the garden. Pattern counts in this set run from about seven to ten, and some appear in the bullets rather than the included-components line. A sprinkler on the end, with no valve to hold pressure, can let the hose shrink while it runs.
Can this hose feed a pressure washer?
A pressure-washer outlet is the wrong supply. BBC Gardeners’ World and DIY Gardening both keep expandable hoses off that connection. The garden tap is the supply these listings are sold for. A 12 bar or 20 bar figure on a product page is the maker’s stated maximum for that hose, not a pressure-washer rating, and we did not retest it.
What does a 12 bar claim actually tell you?
It tells you the listing’s stated maximum, which Flexi Hose and AYZ both print. It does not tell you the pressure at your outside tap, and it does not mean the hose expands at 12 bar. AYZ separates the two ideas: expand at 3–6 bar, with 12 bar as the listed maximum. KETTOYA prints 20 bar. Treat every one of those numbers as a claim on the page.
