Garden hose tap connector UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

The new hose is on the outside tap and water is running down the brick. The bed is still dry. A garden hose tap connector UK fault usually shows on the first turn of the collar, before anyone blames the latex. This page checks a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch outside tap: what those sizes mean as BSP, which of our listings say so, and when the drip is a washer rather than a burst. Length and the latex core stay on the [expandable garden hose buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose/sub/flexible-garden-hose-buying-guide). The twelve rows are on the [flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose). Peter F. read the amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026. We did not gauge your tap. The two threads on a UK tap

A normal outside tap in the UK is a male thread, and the two sizes you will meet are 3/4 inch BSP and 1/2 inch BSP. Hozelock publishes the measurements on its combined outdoor tap connector: 3/4 inch BSP is 26.5 mm across the thread, and 1/2 inch BSP is 21 mm. The same page includes an adapter for older taps and says the connector suits 95 percent of threaded outdoor taps. That 95 percent is Hozelock’s claim, not a survey we made. The 3/4 inch size is the common one, and 1/2 inch is still on older walls. Accessory makers who sell into the UK write BSP when they mean this thread. A Gardena tap piece stocked by a UK shop is a 3/4 inch BSP female for a 3/4 inch BSP male tap. Draper’s brass set 36223 is specified as a 3/4 inch BSP tap connector plus 1/2 inch hose connectors. A hose listing that only says “3/4 inch” has not named the thread. A 21 mm thread will not seal in a collar cut for 26.5 mm, so a 1/2 inch tap adapter is the extra part when the tap is the smaller size.

What these listings actually say

Two Flexi Hose lengths answer whether a Flexi Hose fits a UK tap with a limit. The 50 ft at £19.99 (B0DZR7VRHL) and the 100 ft at £29.99 (B0DZSGDYXG) state 3/4 inch brass only. The bullets say those connectors suit typical outdoor garden taps in the US. US hose thread is not BSP, so we do not call either hose a UK fit. They share one review line, 4.1 from 47,222. The 75 ft Flexi Hose, at £25.99, is a different listing. It says solid 2 cm connectors and does not state the thread. Two centimetres is not the 26.5 mm Hozelock prints for 3/4 inch BSP. Other rows state both 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch and still do not write BSP. AYZ at £19.84 says solid brass in both sizes. XPendHoze at £20.99 says brass in both sizes. HOMOZE at £16.99 and CLMCL at £17.99 state both sizes and do not call the metal brass. KETTOYA at £39.99 says metal connectors in both sizes, not brass. ANSYU at £24.64 and BABADU at £24.99 state both sizes in ABS. The generic 50 ft at £19.99 puts solid brass in the title. Its only review, 5.0 from one person, says 3/4 inch UK-standard brass and a 1/2 inch adapter. The technical table does not, so that review is not the specification. BOANKODU includes washers and states no tap size.

Washer, cross-thread, and the check valve

A drip at the collar on day one is often not a hole in the hose. If an expandable hose leaks at the tap and the jacket further along is dry, look for the garden hose washer before you return the tube. A missing washer, or one that has dropped into the watering can, leaves a wet ring around the nut as soon as you open the tap. Cross-threading does the same thing if you force the collar because the box said 3/4 inch. Forcing a US hose thread onto a BSP tap is that mistake under another name. Spare washers in the generic kit, KETTOYA and BOANKODU only help if the thread already matches. The double check valve is not in the hose collar. In England and Wales, a tap that can take a hose needs one under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Water Regs UK and WaterSafe put that valve on the supply. A valve in the outdoor tap itself is described as lawful for installs from before 1 July 1999, and later protection should sit indoors. WaterSafe cites BS EN 806-5 for replacing check valves about every ten years. None of these hoses is for drinking, and none shows a WRAS mark. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own water byelaws. Call a plumber or the water company if the tap has no double check valve or a new tap has to be cut in. Filling and shutting off are on how to use an expandable garden hose.

Common questions

What thread is a normal UK outside tap?
The usual threaded outside tap is 3/4 inch BSP, and 1/2 inch BSP is still fitted on older properties. Hozelock states those as 26.5 mm and 21 mm. Its combined connector includes an adapter, and the maker says it suits 95 percent of threaded outdoor taps. That figure is Hozelock’s, not ours. Look at the male thread on your wall before you trust a listing that only says 3/4 inch.
Why can a 3/4 inch fitting still leak?
Because 3/4 inch is a size label, not a guarantee of BSP thread. The Flexi Hose 50 ft and 100 ft bullets point their 3/4 inch brass at typical US garden taps, and US hose thread does not match BSP. A collar can also leak because the washer is missing or the nut was cross-threaded. If the hose body is dry and the brick is wet, the fault is at the joint, not a burst further down the tube.
Which listings state both tap sizes?
AYZ and XPendHoze state brass connectors in both 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. HOMOZE and CLMCL state both sizes without calling the metal brass. KETTOYA states metal in both sizes. ANSYU and BABADU state both sizes in ABS. None of those sentences says BSP. The Flexi Hose 50 ft and 100 ft state 3/4 inch only, with the US-tap wording in the bullets.
Which listings mention US taps?
The Flexi Hose 50 ft and the Flexi Hose 100 ft. Both say the solid brass connectors suit typical outdoor garden taps in the US, and neither says BSP. They share the 4.1 from 47,222 review line, so it is one sample. The 75 ft Flexi Hose does not use that US sentence. It says solid 2 cm connectors and leaves the thread unstated. Do not read the other brass rows as if they had printed the same US line.
Is brass the same thing as BSP?
No. Brass is the metal of the collar. BSP is the thread form on a UK tap. AYZ can say solid brass in both inch sizes and still not say BSP. Draper’s set 36223 is a brass tap connector that does write 3/4 inch BSP on the specification. A brass nut on the wrong thread will still weep. Choose the metal because it survives a clumsy start, and choose the thread because you have looked at the tap.
What does a missing washer look like?
Water appears around the connector as soon as you open the tap, and the hose jacket further down stays dry. The washer may never have been in the nut, or it may have dropped out when you offered the collar up to the tap. Several kits in this set include spare washers, including the generic 50 ft, KETTOYA and BOANKODU. A new washer will not seal a US thread on a BSP tap. It only closes a gap on a thread that already matches.
Does the hose include the double check valve?
No listing here is the backflow device. In England and Wales the double check valve belongs on the supply, under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, not on the hose collar. A valve built into an old outside tap can be the lawful arrangement for a pre-1 July 1999 install. If the tap has no protection, or you need a new tap cut in, that is a plumber or the water company. Replacing a dripping washer is not that job.
