How to use an expandable garden hose

Updated: 22 October 2026

You turned the outside tap on and the new hose is still a short sleeve on the path. Or you left it full, the night is forecast to freeze, and you are not sure whether a reel will help. How to use an expandable garden hose is a sequence: connect it, let it lengthen, water with the end out of any standing water, then drain it and bring it indoors before a hard frost. This is not a ranking of the twelve listings. If you are still choosing a length, start with the [expandable garden hose buying guide](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose/sub/flexible-garden-hose-buying-guide) and the [flexible garden hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/flexible-garden-hose). Peter F. used maker instructions and UK care notes, plus the amazon.co.uk listings read on 20 October 2026. We did not film a frost test. Connect and let it lengthen

Unravel the hose on the path before you open the tap. Coopers of Stortford’s expandable-hose instructions say to fill it gently and not to stretch the empty sleeve by hand. A tug on a dry core is how the fabric and the latex part company. Seat the connector on the tap with the washer in place. If water weeps at the collar on the first turn, stop and check the thread and the washer on the garden hose tap connector UK page. Some of these listings use a screw collar and some mention a click gun, so the fitting in your hand may not match a neighbour’s Hozelock. Open the tap part way with the nozzle shut so the core can fill and grow, which is the sequence DIY Gardening describes. Do not walk away and leave the gun shut while the tap is still open. Coopers warns against that combination: a closed valve and a live tap hold the hose under pressure it was not meant to store. If the sleeve stays short after a gentle fill, the tap may be on the weak side. AYZ states that its hose expands at 3–6 bar. A title length of 100 ft is a claim at pressure the listing defines, not a distance you can demand from a feeble mains tap.

While you are watering

Keep the open end out of a water butt, a pond, a bucket or a puddle. WaterSafe’s outside-tap advice is an air gap: the hose should not be able to siphon garden water back toward the supply. Run the first warm water out onto the path before you spray leaves. A hose left in the sun holds a slug of stale, heated water, and the Met Office flags that as a reason to clear the pipe before you water. None of these listings is a drinking-water product. A sprinkler changes the job. Without a valve to hold pressure in the tube, the hose can shrink back while the sprinkler runs, which is the DIY Gardening note, and you lose the reach you just gained. Fit an inline shut-off if that is how you water a lawn. Keep the jacket off rose thorns and bramble. A temporary use ban can forbid hosepipe watering and car washing altogether. The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 gives water companies that power in a drought. Check your own company before you start. The ban is a local rule, not a feature of the hose.

Drain and store

Turn the tap off first. Then open the gun or the valve and walk the water out, squeezing the nozzle end as Coopers describes, until the sleeve shortens. Disconnect it from the tap. Leave it in a loose coil once the fabric has dried. Nature is Calling’s winter note is the one people miss: winding an expandable hose tight on a reel holds it in the stretched state, so the core never gets the rest the design assumes. A reel that suits a rubber hosepipe is a poor winter home for this type. Which? says expandable hoses have a short life if they are snagged, overstretched or frozen, and tells you to store them indoors and to drain them so ice cannot split the wall. AYZ’s own bullet says to drain the hose and to avoid prolonged sun and extreme cold. Before a frost, that means the hose is empty, dry and inside a shed or a utility room, not clipped to the tap overnight.

When the hose is the wrong tool

The double check valve that protects the supply sits on the plumbing, not in the hose collar. If the outside tap has no double check valve, or you need a new tap cut in, that is a plumber or the water company, under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. A split sleeve is a replacement hose, not a call-out. If the hose still will not reach after you have filled it properly, the limit may be the product you bought. The expandable hose vs normal hosepipe page is the point where a reinforced hose on a reel is the honest alternative.

Common questions

Why does the hose stay short?
It is still coiled, it is being pulled empty, the nozzle was open so pressure never built, or the tap is too weak for the expansion the listing assumes. Unravel it, fit the washer, and fill gently with the gun shut. AYZ’s 3–6 bar expansion line is a reminder that a low-pressure tap can leave a 100 ft title well short of 100 ft. Forcing it longer by hand is how the core tears.
Should the nozzle be open while it fills?
Shut the nozzle while the hose fills so the core can expand, then water with the gun open as you need it. The state to avoid is a shut gun left under a running tap. Coopers tells you not to leave the valve closed while the tap is on. When you pause for more than a moment, turn the tap off.
Why does it shrink when a sprinkler is fitted?
A sprinkler lets water out continuously. If nothing holds pressure in the sleeve, the latex contracts and the reach disappears. DIY Gardening flags that case. An inline valve between the hose and the sprinkler keeps the tube filled. The pattern count on a hand gun does not solve it.
How do you make it contract for storage?
Turn the tap off, open the gun, and let the water leave, squeezing toward the free end until the sleeve shortens. Disconnect it. Dry the fabric and coil it loosely. A tight reel holds the stretched shape, which is the opposite of what you want overnight.
Can it stay on a reel?
A reel is a poor store for this hose if the winding keeps it stretched. Nature is Calling says to avoid a tight wind and to use a loose coil indoors. A wall reel is fine for a reinforced rubber hose that does not rely on contracting. Use the reel only if the expandable hose can sit slack and empty.
What should you do before a frost?
Drain it, dry the jacket, and bring it indoors. Which? warns that ice splits the wall, and AYZ says to avoid extreme cold. A hose left on the tap through a clear January night is the usual failure. The forecast does not have to be dramatic. If the tap itself needs lagging, that is plumbing, not a hose setting.
Is the first water out of a sun-warmed hose fine on the plants?
Run that first warm slug onto the path or a drain, then water. A hose in full sun holds heated, stale water. The Met Office treats that as a reason to clear the pipe. After the hose has run cool, ordinary tap water is what these products are sold to deliver. They are still not drinking-water hoses.
When do you stop and call a plumber?
Call a plumber or the water company when the outside tap has no double check valve, when a new tap has to be cut into the supply, or when a submerged hose may have contaminated the pipework. WaterSafe also points to replacing check valves about every ten years, citing BS EN 806-5. A puncture in the sleeve is a new hose. Low pressure throughout the house, under Ofwat’s 0.7 bar floor, is a supply question, not a nozzle setting.
