How to assemble a metal shed

Updated: 22 October 2026

The flat-pack is in the garden and the panels are sharper than the product photos. This is how to assemble a metal shed without turning the first afternoon into a racked frame you cannot return. The sequence follows the order UK makers publish for this kind of kit: a level base, a squared frame, then walls, roof and doors. The four sheds on the [metal tool sheds comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/metal-tool-sheds) all need assembly. Peter F. used those listings and public UK build guides in October 2026, and did not build the four sheds. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the first screw

Wear gloves before you slide a panel out of the wrap. Maker safety sheets treat the edges as sharp, and reviewers of the grey sliding COZYBRITE cut their hands. You want two people, a dry calm day, and a plan to finish. The Trentvale sheet says two or more people, and that you should finish in a day. Reports on the hinged COZYBRITE run to about four or five hours and to about seven hours, with almost 400 screws in one account. The sliding model often takes two days. One YODOLLA household needed two people and about three days. The hinged COZYBRITE uses Phillips screws, and a reviewer found the supplied flat driver useless. The membrane under the base belongs on metal shed condensation, not in this screw count.

Square the base, then the walls

Start on a base that is already level. Waltons' build order is the base, then the base frame, then the diagonals, then the walls, the roof and the doors. The shed's own base rail is not that slab. Rowlinson says the base is not included and asks for a plastic sheet of at least 150 μm under the foundation. Lay the perimeter, fix it only once the two diagonals match, and then stand the corner posts. Walls overlap in the order the diagram shows, usually from the back toward the door, so the weather lap sheds water away from the joint. Doors come last, when the opening is square. A hinged leaf needs swing room. A sliding leaf needs a straight track.

When the holes do not line up

Holes that miss are a known complaint, not a reason to drill on the first miss. UK reviews of the sliding COZYBRITE describe holes that do not line up. The IKAYAA instructions contradicted themselves between pages. Offer the panel to the holes that do exist, loosen the neighbouring screws, and see whether the frame was pulled out of square. A new hole in a thin sheet is permanent. It also makes a missing-part complaint harder, because the kit is no longer as delivered.

When to stop

Stop when a panel is missing, a part is bent beyond a careful tweak, or the instructions disagree with the parts in a way you cannot resolve without cutting. The IKAYAA pattern in the reviews is parts that did not fit and had to be cut, with walls described as soft. That is a reject, not a Saturday project. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives you 30 days from delivery to reject goods that do not conform. The useful moment is before you drill. Do not leave the frame half built overnight if the wind can get at it. The Trentvale manual says not to leave it partial in a light wind. Reviewers of the hinged COZYBRITE found anchor bolts in the box and used them. Fit those fixings once the frame is square, into a base that can hold them, rather than into turf. Who should have avoided that row is on best metal garden shed. What the listing claimed about floor and lock is on the metal garden shed buying guide.

Common questions

How do you assemble a metal tool shed without wrecking the frame?
Level the base, assemble the base frame, and make the two diagonals equal before you tighten it. Then add walls, roof and doors in the diagram's order. Wear gloves, use two people, and loosen screws to correct a twist instead of drilling a new hole on the first miss.
Do you need two people?
Yes for these kits. The Trentvale manual asks for two or more, and the hinged COZYBRITE frame needs a helper. A YODOLLA household also used two people. One person cannot hold a wall square and drive screws at the same time.
What tools replace the supplied driver?
An electric driver with a Phillips bit replaces the flat driver that a hinged COZYBRITE reviewer found useless. You still want gloves, eye protection, a tape for the diagonals, and a drill only for anchors into the base, not for random new holes in the sheets. Screw counts in reviews run from 247 fasteners to almost 400 screws.
When should you stop and reject the kit?
Stop if panels are missing, if parts must be cut to meet, or if the instructions contradict the contents before you have altered anything. You have 30 days from delivery under section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to reject goods that do not conform. Cutting or drilling new holes makes that conversation harder. Photograph the shortage while the parts are still untouched.
Can you leave it half built overnight?
Not if there is any wind. The Trentvale manual says to finish in a day and not to leave a partial build in a light wind. A bare frame racks and can bend the rails you have already squared. If you must stop, take the loose panels down or brace the frame, and wait for a calm day rather than hoping the night stays still.
