Metal garden shed buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a mower and a couple of bikes, and the amazon.co.uk title says 6x4, lockable and floor frame. A 6x4 label is not a 122 cm floor, a padlock is not always in the carton, and a floor frame is not boards. This metal garden shed buying guide walks the checks the listing hides: centimetres, then the door, then floor, lock and the weather word. The four sheds sit on the [metal tool sheds comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/metal-tool-sheds). Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk listings. Read the size in centimetres

A galvanised steel shed sold as 6x4 is named in feet. Four feet is about 122 cm. Both COZYBRITE sheds print an external depth of 110.5 cm, which is shorter than that line, and both were £149.99 when we checked. The hinged model is 178 cm high and sits at 4.0 from 38 ratings. The sliding model is 181 cm high and sits at 3.4 from 110 ratings. You are buying the printed centimetres, though the title still looks like a full 6 ft by 4 ft store. A reviewer of the hinged COZYBRITE could not fit an adult push bike full length. Who should leave which row is on best metal tool shed.

The door table is not the opening

The shell depth is not the opening you wheel a bike through. On both COZYBRITE listings the door table copies the whole shell, so the figures that look like a doorway are the shed again. IKAYAA is the contrast: the door is 71 × 152 cm and the external details are 88 × 88 × 159 cm, at £164.90 with 2.2 from 8 ratings. A door of 71 cm is a narrow slot for a wide mower deck, so read the complaints before you treat that opening as settled.

Floor, lock and the weather word

Metal shed with floor is a search, not a promise. Which? notes that a metal shed usually arrives without a floor. The B&Q Yardmaster Store-All 64PZ shows the same split: a base rail of 184 × 104 cm against an extreme size of 198 × 119 × 174 cm, no floor, and a separate anchor kit, at £179.99. Reviewers of the IKAYAA say there is no floor. A floor frame is the steel rim the walls stand on. How that base deals with damp is on metal shed base and condensation. A latch is not a padlock in the carton. If the box-contents line omits the padlock, budget for one. Water resistant is not waterproof. Treat the weather word as a claim in the product text, not as a hose test we ran. YODOLLA is the listing to leave when the numbers will not agree. The title, a block of 101 × 70 × 95 cm, a door height of 178 cm, and two weights, 27.2 kg and 36 kg, do not describe one cabinet.

A height check before you pay

Before you pay, put the tallest printed figure next to the boundary. In England, Planning Portal's outbuildings guidance uses 2.5 m as the height limit when the building sits within 2 m of a boundary. The hinged COZYBRITE at 178 cm, the sliding model at 181 cm and the IKAYAA at 159 cm all sit under that line on the heights printed for those rows. That is a buying check, not a decision that the shed is permitted. Eaves, roof shape and the gap to the fence still change the answer, and this sentence is England only. Sharp edges and a long screw count belong on how to assemble a metal shed, after those checks.

Common questions

What should you measure before you buy a metal tool shed?
Measure the longest item and the widest item, including handlebars and a mower deck, then the gap from the shed to the fence. Compare those figures with the external centimetres and with a door size smaller than the wall. Feet in the title come last.
Does floor frame mean the shed comes with boards?
No. A floor frame is the steel rim, and reviewers of the IKAYAA say that shed has no floor. Which? makes the same general point about metal sheds. If you need boards, plan them before you treat the kit as finished.
Is water resistant the same as waterproof?
No. Water resistant means the seller claims the shell copes with rain to some degree. None of these listings is a hose test we ran, and metal is not breathable, so a closed shed can drip from condensation even when the roof holds.
Is the padlock in the box?
Only if the box contents say so. Lockable often means a latch or a hasp. A padlock you have to buy is a small extra, though it does not turn a light door into a strong one. Check the contents line on the day you order, because a later edit can drop the lock without changing the title.
What if the listing's door size copies the whole shed?
Treat that table as the shell, not as the opening. Both COZYBRITE door tables copy the shed. IKAYAA prints a door of 71 × 152 cm, which you can set against a mower. If every door figure matches the wall, you do not yet know whether the bike will pass.
What do you do if the title and the details disagree?
Do not pick a middle figure. YODOLLA shows a title, a block of 101 × 70 × 95 cm, a door height of 178 cm, and weights of 27.2 kg and 36 kg. Those cannot all be one cabinet. Leave the listing until one size is printed.
