Metal shed condensation

Updated: 22 October 2026

The roof looks sound, and the inside is still wet in the morning. On a light steel tool shed that drip is often condensation, fed by a damp base, until you can see an actual gap. This page is the ground under the shed and the water on the steel. How the screws go in is on [how to assemble a metal shed](/hub/garden-supplies/metal-tool-sheds/sub/metal-tool-sheds-assembly). The four sheds we kept are on the [metal tool sheds comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/metal-tool-sheds). Peter F. did not hose-test the roofs. Why the roof drips

Steel is a cold surface. GardenSite's metal-shed instructions describe the cycle: moisture from a damp base rises, meets the cold roof, and drips back inside. Asgard calls steel the worst common shed material for condensation because the sheet is cold, and says ventilation reduces it. Leave the vents the listing claims, if they are actually in the box, and do not block them with a bike cover pressed to the roof. If the soil under the shed stays wet, the cycle continues however carefully you wipe the ceiling.

A gap is a leak, not condensation

The drip can also be a leak. One reviewer of the grey sliding COZYBRITE says that shed is not waterproof, with door gaps. All four kept listings are sold as water resistant, not waterproof. Water resistant is a product-text claim. It does not mean a morning bead on the roof is rain coming through a hole. Look for a gap, a torn seam or a door that does not meet before you treat every drip as a failed roof.

The base these sheds do not include

A floor frame is not a floor. COZYBRITE bullets claim a floor frame. Reviewers of the hinged model found struts. Reviewers of the sliding model found no boards. IKAYAA reviewers say there is no floor. Boards, paving or a slab are a separate purchase. GardenSite's sheet asks for a damp-proof membrane, a slab a little above the surrounding soil, and at least seven days for concrete to cure before you load it. We are not prescribing a concrete mix. Waltons' build guide starts with a level concrete slab, then the base frame, then a check that the diagonals match. A twisted rail on a bumpy pad becomes a door that gaps. How those centimetres differ from the title is on the metal garden shed buying guide.

Bolt it down

Argos tells buyers of a Yardmaster 6x4 not to place the shed on grass, earth or sand. That sentence is from a named shed's page, not from the four amazon.co.uk listings. Grass holds water against the steel and gives an anchor nothing solid to bite. Fix the base rail to concrete or to slabs that cannot walk. Reviewers of the hinged COZYBRITE found anchor bolts in that box, and one of them, Simon, reported the shed quiet in hard rain after those bolts went into concrete. That is one household's report, not a weather rating. GardenSite says to anchor every steel or plastic shed. Do not treat a seller's wind line as a class. The YODOLLA listing includes an approximate 60 mph bullet. That figure is untested seller text. Which of the four is even worth bolting down is on best metal garden shed.

Common questions

Why is a metal shed wet inside when the roof has no hole?
Warm, damp air inside meets a cold steel roof and condenses. GardenSite traces that moisture to a damp base. Asgard adds that steel is a cold surface and that a wet bike stored hot makes it worse. A bead with no gap is condensation. A run from a seam is a leak.
What base should you use?
A level concrete slab or firm slabs, sitting a little above the surrounding soil, with the shed's base frame bolted to them. GardenSite asks you to let concrete cure for at least seven days before you build. Grass, earth and sand are the surfaces Argos tells Yardmaster buyers to avoid. The shed's own frame is not this base.
Do you need a damp-proof membrane?
Yes, under the slab or the foundation, so ground moisture does not rise into the shed. GardenSite specifies a membrane for this reason, and a Rowlinson manual asks for a plastic sheet of at least 150 μm under the foundation. The membrane does not replace ventilation. It stops the base feeding the drip.
Can you stand a metal shed on grass?
No, not if you want it to stay put and stay drier. Argos tells Yardmaster buyers not to place that shed on grass, earth or sand. Grass stays damp against the steel and will not hold an anchor. You can set the shed beside a lawn, on a slab that is proud of the soil. The turf itself is not the foundation.
How do you anchor it?
Bolt the base rail to cured concrete or to slabs, using the anchor bolts if the carton includes them. A hinged COZYBRITE reviewer found those bolts and used them on concrete, and reported a quiet shed in hard rain. Fit them only after the frame is square. An unbolted light shell racks in wind. Maker sheets say to anchor steel and plastic sheds alike.
Does water resistant mean it will not drip?
No. Water resistant is the claim on all four listings, and it is not waterproof. Condensation still forms on a cold roof over a damp base, and one sliding-shed reviewer says that shell is not waterproof at the doors. A dry base, a membrane, ventilation and bolts deal with the drip. The word on the listing does not.
