Plastic shed vs wooden shed

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a store for a mower and bins, and you have not decided between resin and timber. This plastic shed vs wooden shed page uses amazon.co.uk listings and guidance from Which?, Screwfix, and the Planning Portal. It is not a lab test. Plastic fits if you will not paint and the tools are ordinary. Wood fits if you need to repair a panel, hang weight, or fit a lock you can upgrade. Prices are on the [plastic garden shed comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/garden-shed-plastic). Peter F. read those files in October 2026. Paint and rot

Which? says a wooden shed needs treatment every year. Screwfix puts timber treatment at every two to three years, and treats plastic as a wash: check for warp and keep the base level. Both intervals are those publishers' guidance, not a winter we measured. If the preservative tin will stay in the garage, resin or polypropylene matches that habit, though Garden Buildings Direct notes that cold can crack panels and heat can warp them. Plastic still needs a hose, a check for bowing, and a base that does not rock. Size and locks are in the plastic garden shed buying guide.

Weight, wind, and shelves

Light panels lift easily and shift in wind, so plastic needs anchors a heavy timber shed often gets from its own mass. Shedbuild calls anchoring compulsory for light panels. The 12.5 kg Outsunny cover is the light case in this set. A LARBANKE 8x6 at 83.7 kg is heavier and still wants a flat, drained platform. An integrated plastic floor is not that foundation. Timber will take a shelf and a board you can cut and screw back. A moulded resin panel is a poor fixing, and a screw can pull through once a toolbox loads the bracket. Choose wood for a rail of long-handled tools. Choose plastic when bins and a mower stay on the floor.

Security and damp

A hasp is only a loop for a padlock, not a security rating, and these amazon.co.uk files show no Sold Secure mark. Which? calls plastic sheds hard to secure. Olsen includes a combination padlock, Keter is called lockable without a padlock in the file, and the LARBANKE 4x3 says the padlock is not supplied. Wood is the more serious shell if you can rehang the door and fit hardware you choose. Plastic does not breathe like timber, so clear the vents to limit the condensation Which? flags. Waterproof is a listing claim. Duramax reviews describe rain at the back panel and gaps at the lid. Who each rigid listing is for is on best plastic garden shed. The Outsunny at about £71.99 sits outside this choice.

The rules do not care about the plastic

Planning looks at height, position, and use, not at plastic versus wood. In England, Class E, as summarised on the Planning Portal, keeps an outbuilding single storey, off the front of the house, and incidental to the dwelling. Eaves are capped at 2.5 m, overall height at 4 m for a dual-pitch roof or 3 m otherwise, and within 2 m of a boundary the overall height falls to 2.5 m. A walk-in listed at 2.3 m, within 2 m of an English boundary, is already close to that cap once you add the base. Scotland's Class 3A uses rear siting, a 4 m maximum, eaves up to 3 m, and 2.5 m within 1 m of the boundary. Wales and Northern Ireland differ again. These walk-ins list under 5 m², and you must not sleep in one.

Common questions

Will I have to paint a plastic shed?
No. A resin or polypropylene shed does not take the preservative a timber shed needs. Which? describes yearly treatment for wood, and Screwfix says every two to three years. You still wash the shell, watch for cracks after cold and warp after heat, and keep the base level. A bowed panel is still yours to notice.
Which is easier to repair?
Wood is easier when you can cut a board, replace felt, and screw a new piece into a frame. A cracked resin panel is often a whole section you cannot plane back like timber. Plastic is easier only if you never need that repair. If you expect to patch or alter the shed, choose wood.
Which is harder to break into?
Neither material here has a security rating you can cite. A hasp only takes a padlock, and Which? treats plastic sheds as hard to secure because the shell and latch are limited. A timber door can take hardware you choose, which helps if the mower is costly, though a thin timber door is not safe by default.
Will a plastic shed sweat?
It can. Plastic does not breathe like timber, so moist air condenses unless the vents can move it. Clear them, and do not shut a wet mower inside and blame only the material. A ventilated timber shed can be kinder to kit that rusts, though wood sweats too if you block the airflow.
Can I screw shelves into resin?
You can drive a screw into resin, and you should not trust it with a loaded shelf. Moulded walls are a weak fixing next to a timber frame you can reinforce. A freestanding rack suits a plastic shed. For a tool rail and a shelf that holds a toolbox, choose wood so the wall carries the weight.
Does the planning rule change with the material?
No. England's Class E limits, and the separate rules in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, turn on height, siting, and use. A 2.3 m shed within 2 m of an English boundary is close to the 2.5 m cap once the base is added, and Scotland uses a different distance. Measure the built height, and ask the council if the house is listed.
When is the cover tent not part of this choice?
It drops out when the product is a cover on a steel frame, not a rigid shed. In this amazon.co.uk set the Outsunny is about £71.99 and 12.5 kg, with zips and stakes as the wear points. It is neither resin nor timber. For a bin store or a walk-in you can padlock, stay with the rigid listings.
