How to hang a wooden garden swing

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have already chosen the support: a tree, a joist, or a pergola built to swing. The mistake now is a rope around the bark, a hook in plasterboard, or ropes that cross. This page is how to hang a wooden garden swing once that support exists. It is not a certified install, and it does not give bolt diameters. If you still need a branch or a frame, use [tree swing or wooden swing frame](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-swing-wood/sub/garden-swing-wood-tree-or-frame) first. The [wooden garden swing comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-swing-wood) holds the nine listings. Figures are the saved amazon.co.uk lines. Peter F. read them on 22 October 2026. A tree branch

Hang a wooden seat from a hardwood branch you can defend, clear of the trunk. Take A Bough’s UK note puts that thickness at about 20 cm on hardwood, not willow. Sitting Spiritually points at oak, beech, or sycamore, and away from pine, poplar, willow, and silver birch. If you cannot tell the species or the health of the limb, ask a tree surgeon. Do not test a doubtful branch by sitting on the new seat. The fixing is a wide strap, not the rope that came with the seat. London Play asks for webbing at least 45 mm wide, rated at least 22 kN. A rope looped around bark saws the tree and the rope. Pellor’s ring, two buckles, and 150–210 cm rope are a seat kit. They do not say 22 kN. Favuit’s “no tools” line does not rate your branch. If the strap is missing, buy a rated sling.

A joist, not the plasterboard

The hook has to enter the joist, or a noggin fixed between joists. Plasterboard is only the skin. Plugs pull out because a swing pulls away from the board. Furinno’s Tioman at £145.83 includes metal chains and weighs about 12 kg before anyone sits down. The chains still need a joist. Stop if you cannot see the joist. A ceiling you will not open is a builder’s job. A plant pergola is not a swing beam until someone qualified says the posts were built for a moving load. The seat’s own load lines are on the wooden garden swing buying guide.

Hooks, height, and crossed ropes

RoSPA’s home play sheet asks for closed S-hooks, at least 200 mm of ground clearance, ropes that are not crossed, and wear protection at the fixing. That is a home checklist. It is not an approval of any ASIN here, and none of the nine extracts cites EN 71-8. EN 1176-2:2017 gives 350 mm of clearance for a single public playground seat. Do not apply 350 mm to these amazon listings. Pellor’s rope is 150–210 cm, AnExer’s hemp is 120–180 cm, and Favuit’s polypropylene is 140–220 cm. Set the length so the empty seat clears the ground by the home 200 mm and the sides hang parallel. One United Kingdom AnExer review says the hemp chafed at the wooden holes and broke within about two weeks.

What these listings actually put in your hand

Furinno includes chains. SAM’s teak bench at £221.07 does not name ropes or chains, so named timber can arrive with nothing to hang it by. Favuit, Pellor, and AnExer name ropes. KINSPORY’s listing does not. The TP Forest Acorn is the frame, and the seat is separate. A tree strap belongs on the branch, not looped around that frame. If the support is still in doubt, stop. Species and winter care are on wooden garden swing weather care.

Common questions

Can I loop the swing rope around the branch?
Use a wide strap on the branch, and keep the seat rope for the seat. Take A Bough’s advice is straps on a sound hardwood limb about 20 cm thick. London Play asks for webbing at least 45 mm wide and rated at least 22 kN. Pellor’s rope and buckles do not state that rating. A kit rope around bark cuts the tree and the rope together.
How thick should the branch be before I hang a wooden seat?
About 20 cm of sound hardwood, clear of the trunk, is Take A Bough’s UK rule of thumb. Sitting Spiritually names oak, beech, or sycamore, and tells you to avoid pine, poplar, willow, and silver birch. Thickness is not enough if the limb is cracked or you cannot see the union with the trunk. Ask a tree surgeon before you strap it.
Can I screw a hook into plasterboard?
The hook has to reach a joist or a noggin. Plasterboard pulls out under a swing because the load pulls the fixing out of the board. Furinno’s chains still need that joist. If the joists are hidden, stop and ask a builder. A picture plug is the wrong fixing.
How high should the seat be at rest?
For home play, RoSPA asks for at least 200 mm of ground clearance. EN 1176-2:2017 uses 350 mm for a single public playground seat, and that figure is not for these nine listings. Set the rope so the empty seat clears the ground by the home figure and the ropes do not cross.
Should the ropes cross?
Leave them uncrossed. RoSPA’s home sheet lists crossed ropes as something to avoid, along with open hooks and unprotected wear points. Crossed ropes twist the seat and rub where the rope meets the wood. The AnExer review of a rope that chafed through the seat holes in about two weeks is what that wear looks like in practice. Check the holes after the first few days, especially if the rope is hemp.
What do I do if I cannot tell whether the joist is sound?
Stop. A tree surgeon takes a limb you cannot judge. A builder takes a ceiling you cannot see into, or posts that rock. None of these listings is RoSPA approved or EN 1176 approved. Hanging the seat to test it is how a doubtful support gets its first real load.
