Pre-cut stair treads or a roll of clear tape

Updated: October 2026

You have a 15-pack of rectangles in one hand and a roll of clear tape in the other, and the roll is cheaper until you notice it is 50 mm wide. Pre-cut stair treads versus anti-slip tape is a format choice: fixed pieces for a straight flight, or a length you cut when the step is not a rectangle. The table is on the [clear stair treads comparison](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads). Width is on the [buying guide](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads/sub/clear-stair-treads-buying-guide). Pre-cut strips on a straight flight

Pre-cut strips are the right default when every going is much the same and you want the edges to match. In this set that means the Spurtar 15-packs, the Peohud 16-pack, the BOMEI 15-pack and the Ealyder 10-pack. You peel a rectangle and you are not marking a 10 m roll on the landing. Two packs include a roller. Peohud is about £16.99 for 16 strips stated as 10 cm by 81 cm, with 4.3 from 155 reviews. The BOMEI 15-pack is about £20.99, with 4.5 from 84 reviews. Reviewers on both mention the roller. The Spurtar packs do not include one. The top pick on review depth remains the Spurtar 6 by 24 inch pack at about £22.99, 4.6 from 1,638 reviews, if the length suits the going. A rectangle that is too narrow, or too short for a deep going, leaves varnish in the walking line. Ealyder’s title says 15 cm by 76 cm and a size field says 76 m, with 5.0 from four reviews. Do not buy a 10-pack on that size line.

A roll when the stair is not a rectangle

Use a roll when the length changes: a winder, a bunk ladder, a ramp, a loft stair that narrows. UK notes on the OQingluan roll, 10 cm by 10 m, describe that cutting. The curve is the failure you should expect. One UK review says it holds on the flat and not on the curves. Do not wrap a bullnose. Cut a piece for the flat walking line and leave the rounded nose bare. Compare area. A 50 mm by 5 m roll is 0.25 m². That is BIGTEETH at about £12.99. A 10 cm by 10 m roll is 1 m², OQingluan at about £18.99, with 4.6 from 755 reviews. A 152 mm by 5 m roll is about 0.76 m², LLPT at the same about £18.99. Four narrow rolls still give you only 1 m², for about £52, and each one is a 50 mm ribbon. The Spurtar 15-pack covers about 1.4 m² if the 24 inch figure is what arrives. Cleaning and the 10 mm set-back are on how to fit clear stair treads.

Which roll has reviews

The reviewed roll to compare is OQingluan, 10 cm by 10 m, about £18.99, 4.6 from 755 reviews. It is PEVA. Buyers describe a clear film, cutting to length, dogs, and one report of grip still there at 18 months with a couple of strips lifting. It is the best value when you need a roll. LLPT is the wide short roll: 152 mm by 5 m, also about £18.99, 4.6 from 108 reviews, diamond texture. The seller says the clear face may yellow or collect dirt. The two BOMEI PVC rolls, about £19.66 and about £22.66, have no customer-review line. Do not treat them as the equal of a roll with 755 reviews because the stated area is larger. PEVA strips and PVC rolls are different materials. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Are pre-cut strips neater than a roll?
On a straight flight, yes. The edges are already cut and you can match them step to step. A roll is neater only after you have cut it square. If the steps do not match, the neat rectangle becomes a ridge.
Is the £12.99 roll the bargain?
No, if the job is a flight. BIGTEETH is 50 mm by 5 m, which is 0.25 m², at about £12.99. The OQingluan roll is about £18.99 for 1 m² and 755 reviews. Several narrow rolls cost more and still leave gaps.
What width covers a normal going?
A band around 100–150 mm on the walking line, not a 50 mm tape. Spurtar’s stated width is about 152 mm. OQingluan and Peohud are about 100 mm. The 150 mm BOMEI roll would match that band on paper, and it has no reviews.
Can a roll follow a winder or a bullnose?
It can be cut for the flat part of a winder. It should not wrap a bullnose. One UK review says the OQingluan roll stays on the flat and lifts on curves. Leave the nose bare.
Does a roll yellow more than a strip?
The LLPT listing says its clear diamond texture may yellow or collect dirt. That warning is not printed on the Spurtar or OQingluan bullets. Yellowing is a stated risk on the diamond roll, not a proven difference for every roll.
