Clear stair treads buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A varnished flight looks finished and still throws you in socks, and a carpet runner would hide the timber. A clear stair treads buying guide has to settle width, texture and format before the sticker price does. The full table is on the [clear stair treads comparison](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads). One conditional pick is on [best clear stair treads](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads/sub/clear-stair-treads-best). What you are actually buying

You are buying a self-adhesive film, not a stair nosing and not a building certificate. In this set the household pieces are clear PEVA strips or rolls. PEVA is a soft plastic with a textured face. The Spurtar packs call that face a litchi grain. A PVC roll, such as the two BOMEI PACK tapes, is a different material with seller copy about rain and UV, and neither of those rolls has a customer-review line. The UK Slip Resistance Group’s stair note talks about a proprietary nosing that covers about 50–65 mm of the tread. That figure is the depth of a shaped edge piece. It is not a recommended width for a peel-and-stick strip. Pre-cut packs here are rectangles, sometimes with a small roller. Rolls are a length you cut. If the flight is straight and the steps match, rectangles save marking out. The format split is on pre-cut strips or a roll.

Width before price

Measure the going before you sort by price. A useful clear strip in this set sits around 100–150 mm wide and stops short of the nosing. The Spurtar 15-pack at about £22.99 is stated as 6 by 24 inches, about 152 mm by 610 mm. The longer Spurtar at about £28.99 is stated as 6 by 32 inches, so the extra money is length, not a wider band. Peohud’s 16-pack is stated as 10 cm by 81 cm. Ealyder’s title says 15 cm by 76 cm, while a size field says 15 cm by 76 m. The trap is the lowest ticket. BIGTEETH is about £12.99 for 50 mm by 5 m, which is 0.25 m², with 4.8 from 12 reviews, nearly all from the United States. A 15-pack of 6 by 24 inch strips is about 1.4 m² at about £22.99. One UK review of the BOMEI 15-pack, whose title says 6 by 24 inches, measured about 4 inches. A bullet on that listing also says 4 by 24 inches. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 11 says goods must match the description. Measure the first strip before you commit the flight.

Texture, outdoors, and what a strip does not prove

Soft PEVA is the texture UK reviewers describe for socks and dogs on indoor timber. The OQingluan seller says the 10 cm by 10 m roll is not sandpaper. The LLPT roll, 152 mm by 5 m at the same about £18.99, is a diamond texture, and the seller warns it may yellow or collect dirt. BIGTEETH’s bullets say soft PEVA, but several of the 12 reviews describe coarse sandpaper. Outdoor claims run ahead of the reviews. Spurtar’s highlight calls the strips indoor. Treat rain and UV lines on the unreviewed PVC rolls as seller copy. None of these listings publishes a pendulum test value. HSE guidance in GEIS2, and the UK Slip Resistance Group, treat 36 or above as low slip potential in the conditions of the test. A pack at 4.6 stars is not that test. Approved Document K is England’s guidance on stairs. A workplace should not hand an inspector a clear film and call it a slip certificate. The fitting sequence is on how to fit clear stair treads. Common questions

How wide should clear stair treads be?
Aim for a band around 100–150 mm on the walking line, set back from the nosing, rather than a 30–50 mm marker. A 50 mm by 5 m roll covers 0.25 m². The stated 6 inch Spurtar strips are about 152 mm. Measure the going first.
Does a clear strip meet Building Regulations?
No listing here shows that it does. Approved Document K is guidance for stairs in England. A pendulum value of 36 is an HSE low-slip band in specified test conditions, and these packs do not print a result. A strip does not sign off the flight, the handrail or the lighting.
Why is a £12.99 roll not the best value?
BIGTEETH is about £12.99 because the roll is 50 mm by 5 m. You get 0.25 m² and a 4.8 score from 12 reviews. The OQingluan roll is about £18.99 for 10 cm by 10 m, which is 1 m², with 4.6 from 755 reviews. Compare area and review depth.
What if the pack is narrower than the title?
Measure it before you fit the whole flight. The BOMEI 15-pack title says 6 by 24 inches, a bullet says 4 by 24 inches, and one UK review measured about 4 inches. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to match the description.
Are outdoor claims safe to trust?
Treat them as unverified unless a review describes weather. Seller lines mention decks, boats, rain and UV. Spurtar’s own highlight says indoor. One OQingluan review mentions wet concrete door steps. That is not a winter test for the category.
