Clear stair treads for dogs

Updated: October 2026

The dog reaches the landing and slides, back feet skating on varnish, and a carpet runner would hide the oak and collect every hair. Clear stair treads for dogs are the compromise UK reviewers describe: a soft transparent strip on the going, so a paw has something to push against. Fitting is on [how to fit clear stair treads](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads/sub/clear-stair-treads-how-to-fit). The pack list is on the [clear stair treads comparison](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads). Products Compared used amazon.co.uk review notes on 19 October 2026. We did not run a paw test.

Why wooden stairs fail a dog, and what reviewers wrote

Varnish and gloss paint show the grain and wipe clean. A claw meets that film and the foot travels. Older dogs, and dogs with worn pads, lose the scramble a puppy still has. A carpet stair tread fixes the slide and holds fur, which is the look many of these buyers say they do not want. Beige carpet pads from the same search were removed because they are textile. A clear PEVA strip leaves the timber visible. It is not invisible, and it only helps where it is stuck. On the Spurtar packs, the first 50 texts are mostly UK notes about wooden and painted stairs. Older dogs stop slipping, socks feel safer, and one buyer used the strips on a dog ramp. The shorter pack is about £22.99, with 4.6 from 1,638 reviews. The longer pack is about £28.99, and the review wording overlaps, so do not treat those as two dog trials. The BOMEI 15-pack at about £20.99, 4.5 from 84 reviews, draws the same kind of note, including a spiral stair. One UK review measured about 4 inches rather than 6. Ealyder’s only review text, against a 5.0 from four ratings, mentions one Cavapoo. That is one household.

Width, and which steps to cover

A paw path needs a band, not a pinstripe. BIGTEETH is 50 mm by 5 m at about £12.99, which is 0.25 m². A dog can place a foot beside that line and gain nothing. Peohud’s stated width is 10 cm. The OQingluan roll is also 10 cm, by 10 m, at about £18.99 with 4.6 from 755 reviews, and dog notes on that roll include stairs and a tiled kitchen. The Spurtar strips are stated at about 152 mm wide. Cover the steps where the slide happens, and keep the same set-back. A single strip in the middle of a glossy flight teaches nothing useful. Bottom and top steps are where a lot of these notes start. A roll is the better shape when the stair is a winder or the route includes a ramp. One OQingluan review says the film will not hold on curves. If the trouble is a bullnose, do not wrap it. Rectangles or a roll are on pre-cut strips or a roll.

What the strips will not fix

They will not turn a steep or uneven flight into a safe one. RoSPA’s safer-stairs campaign is about geometry and handrails, and it reports more than 1,000 stair deaths a year in England and Wales. That figure is not a result these strips produced. They will not grip the nosing you left bare, and they will not stay proven on a wet deck because a seller mentioned pets. The Peohud decking reviewer had not had rain. Socks and paws are the same film and not the same promise. A sock can still slide on the bare wood beside a narrow tape, and a long claw can pick at a fresh edge before the adhesive has had a day or two. Peohud at about £16.99, 4.3 from 155 reviews, is mentioned for elderly dogs, and one UK review said the strips were not anti-slip at all. Another said they trap dirt and hair. Soft PEVA is still the texture these dog notes describe. Coarse grit, which several BIGTEETH reviews report, is a harsher surface for indoor pads. Common questions

Will clear strips stop a dog slipping on varnished wood?
They can give a paw a textured patch where they are stuck, which is what UK reviews on the Spurtar and Peohud packs describe for older dogs. They do not cover the whole going unless the strip is wide enough, and one Peohud review said there was no grip at all. This is not a paw test.
Are they better than carpet treads for a dog that sheds?
They leave the timber visible and they do not hold a pile of fur the way a carpet pad does. Peohud’s texture drew a UK complaint about trapped hair. Carpet-colour treads are outside this comparison.
How wide a strip does a paw need?
Wide enough that the foot lands on it. A 50 mm roll is too thin for a paw path on a normal going. Stated widths here run from 10 cm on Peohud and the OQingluan roll to about 152 mm on the Spurtar packs.
Can you cover only the steps the dog misses?
Yes, if those are the steps where the slide happens and you keep the position consistent. Bottom and top steps are the usual place to start. The film still needs a clean surface and a set-back from the nosing.
What if the dog still slips on the nosing?
The nosing was left uncovered on purpose, so the claw is on varnish. Move to a wider strip, or accept that this product does not cap the nose. Wrapping a bullnose is where rolls lift.
