How to fit clear stair treads

Updated: October 2026

How to fit clear stair treads starts when the strip peels, or the front edge curls into a lip, because the stair is dusty, cold, or the tape runs over the nosing. Which pack to buy is on the [clear stair treads comparison](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads) and the [best clear stair treads](/hub/flooring/clear-stair-treads/sub/clear-stair-treads-best) page. Products Compared used UK tape-fitting notes and the amazon.co.uk review record on 19 October 2026. We did not fit these products in a lab.

Prepare the tread, and place the strip

Start with a stair that is sound, dry and warmer than about 10°C. National Stair Nosings, StopSlip and FibreGrid all give that temperature for their own anti-slip tape, not as a test of these amazon packs. The LLPT listing says a surface above 40°F, about 4°C. Prefer the 10°C line from the UK suppliers. Wash off polish, grease and grit, then let the tread dry. Do not re-wipe with a cloth that is already dirty. Those suppliers specify an isopropyl alcohol wipe and say not to use methylated spirits. Keep the strip on the flat of the going, about 10 mm back from the nosing, so the front edge is not scuffed into a curl. Do not bridge the rounded nose, and do not stretch the film. If a pre-cut strip is longer than the stair is wide, trim it. If it is shorter than the going, do not drag it over the nose. On a winder, cut shorter pieces for the walking line. One UK review of the OQingluan roll says it holds on the flat and not on the curves. Bare, powdering timber may need a sealer the tape maker specifies. Do not invent a household primer.

Press it, then leave it

Press from the middle outwards. A roller is in the Peohud 16-pack and the BOMEI 15-pack. Reviewers on those packs credit the roller with fewer bubbles. The Spurtar packs and the rolls in this set do not include one. A clean decorating roller does the same work if you keep it off the adhesive. The LLPT listing says not to touch the glue. Do not decide the bond in the first hour. FibreGrid talks about full adhesion in about 24 hours. National Stair Nosings and StopSlip say about 48 hours. Use the stairs lightly if you must. One Peohud reviewer reported the strips still holding after three months. One OQingluan reviewer was still getting grip at 18 months, with a couple of strips coming off. If a piece goes down crooked, some rolls can be lifted while the adhesive is fresh. Do not keep peeling a strip that has already gripped varnish. A US review in the LLPT sample pulled paint off trim. Paws on varnish are on clear stair treads for dogs.

When to stop

Stop if the paint or varnish is flaking. A clear strip will stick to the loose layer and pull it off, or it will come away and leave a trip. Sticking a second strip over a failed one hides the dirt. Stop if the stair is a workplace route or a common stair you do not control. None of these listings publishes a pendulum value. HSE checklist CK4 says you replace tape that is worn or lifting because the edge trips people. Stop if the flight itself is the hazard: uneven steps, no handrail, poor light. RoSPA’s safer-stairs point is about geometry and handrails, and it cites more than 1,000 stair deaths a year in England and Wales. A strip does not change that. If you are still choosing a rectangle or a roll, use pre-cut strips or a roll. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Do you have to clean with a particular product?
Use a wipe that removes grease and then dries, not a polish. UK tape suppliers specify isopropyl alcohol and tell you not to use methylated spirits or a dirty cloth for the second wipe. Dust left under a clear film shows, and it is where the edge starts to lift.
How far back from the front edge should the strip sit?
About 10 mm back from the nosing, on the flat going. That figure comes from commercial tape instructions, including FibreGrid, not from a test of these packs. Do not stretch the strip to close that gap.
What about varnish, paint and bare wood?
Sound, clean varnish or tile is the DIY surface in the UK reviews. Flaking paint can lift with the tape. Bare or dusty timber may need a sealer the tape maker specifies. Do not invent a household primer.
What if the stair winds?
Cut pieces for the flat walking line, or use a roll, and do not wrap a bullnose. One OQingluan review says the roll holds on the flat and not on the curves. A pre-cut rectangle forced around a turn will ridge.
When should you stop and call someone?
Call a joiner if the finish is failing, the nosing is damaged, or you need a slip report. Replace any strip that has already lifted, because HSE CK4 treats that edge as a trip. A second layer on a cold, dirty step will not become a better bond.
