Epoxy or wax tile repair: which filler fits the chip

Comparison2026-10-167 min read
A chipped ceramic floor tile beside hard wax bars and two tubes of epoxy paste

Hard wax melts into a dry scratch. Two-part epoxy cures hard for a floor chip. Match epoxy or wax tile repair to the damage and the kit's printed cure.

You are crouched beside a chipped floor tile with two boxes from the same search. One holds hard wax bars. The other holds two tubes of paste. Epoxy or wax tile repair is that choice. A wax bar is melted into a light scratch and hardens as it cools. A two-part epoxy paste is mixed, left until it cures hard, and then sanded flush. Shoes and water decide which box you open.

Products Compared read the amazon.co.uk listings for BOFRHME and MendMight on 15 October 2026, plus Konig's UK page and Walls and Floors' guide on floor chips. Prices and star lines are those listings. This site did not run a wear test or a soak test. Links to amazon.co.uk use the tag pcuk26-21. In short

Melt hard wax into a light scratch on a dry surface. Use a two-part epoxy paste on a small chip in a tile that is still firmly stuck, and near water only when that kit prints a water claim and a waiting time. BOFRHME at £22.99 is the wax. MendMight at £13.59 prints a 24-hour wait and calls the cured putty water-resistant. A tile that has cracked through needs replacing.

Epoxy or wax tile repair is two different fillers

Amazon's search files them on different shelves. MendMight, a 160 g two-part epoxy putty, sits in Tile Epoxy Adhesives. BOFRHME, eleven wax bars in a storage box, sits in Hand Tool Sets. Rank on those pages was 28 for the putty and 529 for the wax set. Rank is a shopping label. One query is mixing a resin you mix cold with a bar you melt.

The tile repair kit comparison holds twelve listings. Eleven are pastes. BOFRHME, ASIN B0F6Y1ZY3T, is the only wax kit, at £22.99, with 2.5 from two ratings and no written review, on amazon.co.uk since 30 April 2025. MendMight, ASIN B0GBTDGLS8, was £13.59, with 4.1 from 171 reviews: a colour match, not a wear test. The top pick is Tufinein, ASIN B0GVHDY6D5, about £16.99, 4.4 from 185 reviews, 160 g, a 1:1 mix and a 24-hour cure.

Epoxy paste is mixed, pressed in, cured and sanded level. Ceramic filler wax is a bar you warm until it flows, then leave until it cools. Konig's UK kit, KO669, is that heated method at £243.36 including VAT, with twenty shades and matt and gloss pens. The £22.99 set is eleven consumer colours. These pastes sit outside BS EN 12004. A wax bar sits outside BS EN 13888. A tile that moves, sounds hollow, or has split edge to edge is outside both boxes.

When hard wax tile repair sticks are the right tool

Hard wax tile repair sticks belong on a light scratch or a small edge nick in a dry spot. You warm a bar, press the melt in, and let it harden as it cools. BOFRHME prints no cure time. It firms when the wax is cold, and the colours can be combined. The box colour is random. Test a dab in daylight, then warm a high spot and wipe it while the wax is soft.

You do need heat. Konig sells its ceramic filler as a heated system. BOFRHME says the wax is melted into the damage and names no iron, wattage or temperature. Keep the heat low, moving, and off your skin and the glaze, and let the wax cool before you level it. Konig's sheet describes a mineral-and-wax filler, heat-resistant for up to two hours at 110°C. That line does not transfer to the BOFRHME bars. The price gap does not turn the £22.99 box into a Konig kit.

Furniture wax, a wax crayon, and a stick for a vinyl wear layer are different materials. A vinyl floor scratch or a ceramic chip keeps those floors apart. BOFRHME names tile walls, tile floors and washing tables, with no measured wear result. Two ratings and no review text do not show a month of mopping. Use the bars where a failed dab is easy to warm out: a dry wall, a light scratch, a corner that stays dry.

When a two-part epoxy tile paste is the right tool

A two-part epoxy tile paste is for a small chip, scratch or pit on a firm tile. MendMight prints a 1:1 mix, a clock, a water line and a structural limit together. The fill is 160 g; the item weight is 240 g. Tints are white, red, black, blue, yellow and green. Cure is 24 hours, then 24 hours or more before water. Mix a pea, not the whole tub. In the first 50 reviews, beige is hard to hit and the cure is often shinier than the tile. Why a tile repair dries glossier than the tile stays with that sheen.

Uncured epoxy can sensitise skin. The Health and Safety Executive treats epoxy resins as skin sensitisers linked to allergic contact dermatitis. Wear gloves and follow the label. After the time on the card, sand the fill flush. Walls and Floors' point is physical: a proud patch is something you feel underfoot. Stop when a fingernail no longer catches the edge. Wax is levelled while you can still warm it. Cured epoxy is abraded back.

Colour is the trade-off. Eleven wax bars can sit closer to a tile colour before you start. Six primary tints are a fussier mix, especially on beige porcelain. How to colour-match a porcelain chip is the mixing piece. Make the test dot in the light the tile actually lives in. These listings do not prove an invisible repair.

Wet rooms, floors, and wax versus epoxy

Walls and Floors says repair a floor chip with two-part epoxy, because a softer fill wears underfoot. BOFRHME names tile floors, with no wear figure and no waterproof line. A faint dry-corner mark is the only floor scratch where wax is even a candidate. A chip on the route to the sink belongs with hard paste. Leave wax off showers, wet bath rims and floors mopped into a puddle.

MendMight says water-resistant after full cure, and to wait 24 hours, then 24 hours or more, before water. Water-resistant is weaker than waterproof, and it is the seller's word. This site did not soak a sample. A kit with no clock does not inherit those hours. The comparison records Tufinein's water claim as waterproof, with a 24-hour cure. Water through to the room below is a leak. Filler on the face leaves the bed as it was.

A cracked-through tile is neither filler

A crack through the body is a broken tile. Topps Tiles says replace a cracked floor tile when you can match the batch. MendMight excludes a structural crack, an unsupported deep hole and a large broken section. BOFRHME stays with light scratches. Paste or wax on the face also leaves a hollow tile hollow.

If a tile rocks, or several sound hollow, the job is re-bedding or replacement. Cracks in a line on a heated floor are movement, and paste across a movement joint glues a gap that was meant to move. The repair or replace guide separates a firm chip from a loose tile. Call a tiler when water reaches another room or you would have to cut the tile out. Cutting tile releases respirable crystalline silica, which the Health and Safety Executive warns about. Once the tile comes out, both boxes stay shut.

Which page to open next

Open the comparison for the twelve listings side by side. BOFRHME is the wax row. MendMight is the putty with 171 reviews. Tufinein is the top pick. Prices are the 15 October 2026 amazon.co.uk figures, and they move. Open the buying guide when two numbers on one listing disagree: damage, then chemistry, then colour, then the water clock.

Open who each kit type is for when you want a paste with a printed cure. Any recommendation there is tied to a surface and a job. Open the how to use guide when the kit is on the table. MendMight's wait stays on MendMight. If the tile is loose, hollow or cracked through, use the repair or replace guide before you mix anything.

Common questions

Are wax sticks strong enough for a floor?
Walls and Floors recommends a two-part epoxy for a floor chip because a softer fill wears underfoot. BOFRHME names tile floors and light scratches filled with melted wax, with no wear figure and no waterproof line. A chip people walk on belongs with a hard paste. A faint mark in a dry corner is the only floor scratch where a wax bar is even a candidate. Two ratings and no written reviews do not add a wear test.
Do I need a heating iron for hard wax?
Hard wax has to be melted before it will flow into a scratch. Konig's UK ceramic kit is sold as a heated filler, so that trade system includes heat. BOFRHME says the bars are melted into the damage and does not name an iron, a wattage or a temperature. Keep the heat low, moving, and off your skin and the glaze. Epoxy paste is mixed cold. Wear gloves, because uncured epoxy can sensitise skin.
Is epoxy waterproof after it cures?
MendMight's listing says water-resistant after full cure, and it prints 24 hours, then 24 hours or more, before water. That is the seller's word. Products Compared did not soak a cured sample, and the line does not copy onto every paste. Some kits say waterproof and print no hour count. The comparison records Tufinein's water claim as waterproof, with a 24-hour cure. Follow the card in the box you open. BOFRHME does not say waterproof.
Can I use wax in a shower?
BOFRHME does not print a waterproof or water-resistant line, so a shower wall, a tray and a wet bath edge sit outside that listing. A wax crayon or furniture wax is a different product. For a small chip you can keep dry for the full stated wait, read a paste that prints a water claim. MendMight's word is water-resistant after full cure, which is weaker than waterproof.
Why is the trade wax kit so much more than £23?
Konig's KO669 kit is £243.36 including VAT, with twenty shades and matt and gloss pens. The filler sheet describes a mineral-and-wax material, heat-resistant for up to two hours at 110°C. BOFRHME at £22.99 is eleven wax colours, at 2.5 from two ratings and with no written reviews. That gap is a trade system beside a consumer set. It does not turn the £22.99 box into a Konig kit.
Which filler is easier to colour-match?
BOFRHME's eleven wax colours, which you can melt together, are more ready-made starting points than MendMight's six tints: white, red, black, blue, yellow and green. In the first 50 MendMight reviews, beige and off-white are hard to hit, and the cured putty is often shinier than the tile. Two ratings do not show how a wax colour holds. Make a test dot in daylight either way. These listings do not prove an invisible repair.
Can I sand wax and epoxy the same way?
Cured epoxy is sanded flush after the time printed for that kit. Wax is levelled as it cools, while you can still warm a high spot down. A proud patch is something you feel underfoot, which is why Walls and Floors wants a flush floor fill. Heavy abrasive on the glaze around either repair leaves a dull ring. Stop when a fingernail no longer catches the edge of the fill.
What if the tile is cracked through?
Replace a cracked-through floor tile when you can match the batch. Topps Tiles gives that advice for a cracked floor tile. MendMight excludes a structural crack, an unsupported deep hole and a large broken section. BOFRHME stays with light scratches and melted wax. Filler on the face leaves a hollow tile hollow. If the crack runs, the tile rocks, or water reaches another room, leave both boxes shut.
