How to cut laminate flooring with a manual guillotine

Updated: 21 October 2026

The first cut is where a new laminate floor goes wrong: the corner snaps, the underside feathers, and you press again because the first push felt timid. You are about to use a manual guillotine on click laminate, with the board supported and your hands clear of the blade. By the end you should know the one firm press, and the moment the cut is no longer a guillotine cut. Peter F. followed Wood Floor Warehouse, Quick-Step UK, and the review notes behind our [laminate cutter comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/laminate-cutter). We did not stand in your room and cut your pack. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the cutter and the board

Put the cutter on a flat floor where it cannot walk, not on a rug and not on an offcut pile. Finished face up: the wear layer is the side you will see, and a ragged edge in the reviews is usually the back. Mark the cut on the face and line it up with the blade. Wood Floor Warehouse’s shape is right: lift the handle, keep your hands clear, and press once, like a paper guillotine. Keep your hand at least 20 cm from the blade. Only Zozen describes a chain brake. Use it when you stop, and do not invent it on the other five. Fit the handle first if it arrived off, which is how the Wolfcraft is described.

Support the offcut and press once

Hold the waste as well as the piece you are keeping. A WORKPRO reviewer saw the first offcuts shatter until the other side was supported. Bring the handle down in one firm press. A second, hesitant push tears the wear layer after the core has started to break. If the handle will not go, stop. Wolfcraft reviews describe a cleaner top and a ragged underside. Skirting hides many of those ends. A threshold with no cover will not. Roughneck reviews suggest allowing about a centimetre and nibbling a tail of waste. If a 12 mm pack stalls, the limit is on cutting thick laminate, not a harder shove. A crushed click will not tap home.

Lengthwise only if this cutter is built for it

Most of these tools bring a plank to length. Wood Floor Warehouse is plain: the guillotine does not rip a board to width. The exception is the Wolfcraft LC 600: remove the stop and nibble on the serrated bars, finished side up, a sliver at a time. Wonkee Donkee describes that staged rip for cutters built to do it. Do not write it onto a 330 mm guillotine. CutTool and WORKPRO reviews say those tools cut across the width, not along the length. A short Wolfcraft nibble inside the 8 mm cap is still not a 4 metre rip.

Doorways, pipes, and a blunt blade

A door lining is not a guillotine cut. Quick-Step UK says undercut the moulding with a multitool or a handsaw, using a scrap plank plus the underlay as the height guide, so the board slides under. A pipe notch is a jigsaw or a fine handsaw, in from the edge. Sharpen when the wear layer starts to tear. Use the 600-grit stone if the box included one. Zozen’s listing does not name a spare blade. You do not need a dust mask for the shear. If a saw runs indoors, HSE describes respiratory protection at APF 20, such as FFP3. Call a fitter for a badly uneven subfloor or a fire door you must not cut.

Common questions

Which face goes up?
Lay the finished wear layer upwards so the face you will see takes the cleaner side of the shear. Reviews on the Wolfcraft and the Roughneck describe a cleaner top and a ragged back. If the end will show, look at the underside of a scrap before you cut the whole row the same way.
Why did the corner snap?
The waste side was probably unsupported, or the handle came down in two hesitant presses instead of one. A WORKPRO reviewer saw offcuts shatter until the other side was held. Support both sides, then press once. A second push on a board that is too thick makes the chip worse.
How hard should the press be?
One firm movement, the way a paper guillotine works, with your hands clear of the blade. You should feel the board go. You should not bounce the handle. If it stalls on a 12 mm pack, stop rather than hanging your weight on a second bite.
Can I cut along the plank with the same tool?
Only if that listing says so. The Wolfcraft LC 600 says you remove the stop and nibble a longitudinal cut, inside its thickness cap. Reviews of the heavy 330 mm tools say they cut across the width and not along the length. The last row of a wide plank is a saw cut unless your cutter is built for the rip.
How do I get the floor under a door frame?
Undercut the moulding, then slide the board under. Quick-Step UK names a multitool or a handsaw, with a scrap plank and the underlay as the height guide. The guillotine does not reach into the lining. Leave a fire door. That is a fitter’s job, not a deeper setting on the cutter.
When do I sharpen?
When the wear layer starts to tear, not after a fixed number of boards. One WORKPRO review said every 15 cuts. Another said three bedrooms needed no sharpening. Use the 600-grit stone if your box included one. If no spare is listed, do not assume you can buy a match on the high street.
