Two sequences, not one

A solvent weld is a short open window and a long wait before water. Coat rigid PVC-U, push the socket home, hold it still, then leave it for the final strength on that cement’s sheet. A flexible patch is the opposite: the skin stays soft, the patch is larger than the hole, and the clock is how long the item stays uninflated. Tangit’s PVC-U sheet, which is not an amazon tin here, is the worked pipe clock: about four minutes open at 20 °C for a 1 mm film, do not move the joint for five minutes, final strength at 24 hours, between 5 °C and 35 °C. EPN and Allony say 24 hours. KKwoter says 48 hours.

Solvent-weld a rigid fitting

Cut the pipe square, deburr it, and chamfer the outside so the cement is not scraped off. Mark the socket depth. Clean until a waxy face looks matt, and do not touch it. Stir the cement, coat the pipe and the socket, and push fully home without twisting. Hold it, wipe the excess, and put the lid on. Do not dilute it. HSE’s solvent guidance is to ventilate, keep lids on, keep solvent off skin, and keep a naked flame away. Bond It does not give a cure in hours. The Soudal-titled jar and XINGHUO’s pipe bullet say 24 hours. Do not lend Tangit’s four minutes to Bond It. For Tangit only, open time falls to about a minute at 40 °C. Below 10 °C, do not move the joint for 15 minutes. Final strength is 24 hours before filling.

Patch flexible PVC and leave it soft

Drain and dry the skin. One GleamGlee repair only stuck after the bottle was warmed to room temperature. Use a patch larger than the hole, with rounded corners, a thin film, pressed from the centre. EPN and Allony say 24 hours. KKwoter says 48 hours. GleamGlee states no hours, so do not inflate the same evening. Polymarine is a contact bond: two thin coats, primer 2903, a 25:1 mix, and a pot life of about three to four hours. Do not slide the patch once the faces meet. No pressure for at least six hours, full cure at 48 hours, maximum strength at seven days, and no naked flame. Humid air can bloom the film. Amazon prints no cure and contradicts itself on water resistance, so use the maker’s clock. Oase is applied dry.

When the sequence stops

Stop if mains water cannot be matched to an approval and a cure under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. A potable-water bullet is not that match. Stop for gas. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 put that work with a competent person. Stop for a liferaft, or if a PVC boat tear exceeds 75 mm in any direction. Polymarine then wants an inside patch as well as an outside one. Inflatable Repairs uses 50 mm for its own cut. Do not merge 50 mm and 75 mm into one rule. Stop if the pond film cannot be dried.

Common questions

How do you solvent-weld a PVC-U fitting?
Cut square, deburr, and chamfer the pipe. Mark the socket depth, clean until the face is matt, and do not touch it. Stir the cement, coat the pipe and the fitting, and push fully home without twisting. Hold the joint, wipe the excess, and put the lid back on.
How long is the open time, and what happens if you miss it?
On Tangit’s sheet, for Tangit only, the open time is about four minutes at 20 °C for a 1 mm film, and it falls to about a minute at 40 °C. If you miss it, the surfaces skin and the socket will not fuse properly when you push.
How long before the pipe can take water?
Tangit’s final strength is 24 hours before filling or a leak test. The Soudal-titled jar and XINGHUO’s pipe bullet also say 24 hours. Bond It’s listing does not give an hour figure, so you follow the pipe manufacturer’s sheet rather than inventing one.
How do you patch flexible PVC, and how long before you inflate it?
Clean and dry the skin, warm a cold bottle, and use a patch larger than the hole. Press the air out and leave the item soft. EPN and Allony say 24 hours. KKwoter says 48 hours. GleamGlee does not state hours, so do not inflate it the same evening.
Why do 24 hours and 48 hours both appear?
Because they are printed on different products. EPN, Allony, the Soudal-titled jar and XINGHUO’s pipe bullet say 24 hours. KKwoter says 48 hours. Oase says 24 hours in a field and 24–48 hours in a bullet. Polymarine’s full cure is 48 hours, with a longer wait for maximum strength.
When is the job no longer a DIY sequence?
When the joint is mains water you cannot match to an approval, when any gas fitting is involved, when a boat tear needs an inside patch over 75 mm, or when a liner cannot be dried. A liferaft is in that stop list.
