Sine wave inverter buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a title that shouts 2000 W, and the line under it may be a peak, a modified wave, or a lighter plug that cannot feed that load. A sine wave inverter buying guide for a UK 12 V or 24 V battery is a short order: waveform, then continuous watts, then battery voltage, then the connection that has to carry the current. It is not a lab test, and it does not name a single winner. A purchase from the main table can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Prices and the clashes on those rows are on the [sine wave inverter comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/sine-wave-inverter).

Read the waveform line, not the title

“Sine” on a title is not a waveform. Eleven listings in this set print pure sine on the specification line. One does not. The VeftBltrem unit at £29.99 is modified sine in the bullets, with 900 W continuous and 2000 W peak, while the title leads with 2000 W and never says modified. There are no reviews, and the warranty field says no. If the specification line is missing, do not fill it in from the title. How those two shapes behave is on pure sine wave vs modified sine wave.

Size continuous watts, then peak

Size from the continuous figure, then treat peak as a short surge. Titles in this set often lead with the larger number. VeftBltrem’s title says 2000 W where the bullet says 900 W continuous. Fit4Less says 1500 W continuous on the title while a wattage field also says 1000 W. JIGUUN’s table says 300 W continuous at 12 V, and the title also says 600 W and 24 V. Plan from the table’s continuous watts unless that same listing states a split you can quote. Which listing matches a laptop, a 1000 W hard-wire, or a kettle is the next page, best sine wave inverter.

Match 12 V or 24 V, then the plug

After watts, match the battery voltage on the inverter. Eleven units are 12 V. Fit4Less is the only 24 V input, at £89.99 with one BS socket. A single 12 V leisure battery is the wrong source. At 24 V the current for the same AC watts is about half. It is not a setting you invent on a 12 V unit. Connection is the next refusal. A cigarette-lighter plug is not a 300 W socket. BESTEK is pure sine at £49.99 with a lighter plug rated 300 W continuous, and reviews say a 10 A lighter socket cannot supply that and may blow the vehicle fuse. A 10 A socket is on the order of 100 W of AC after losses. If the connection cell is unknown, as it is for the Giandel 4000 W and the VeftBltrem, do not assume clips or a plug.

What to ignore on the product page

BESTEK’s specification table says 60 Hz. UK mains are 50 Hz, and the listing does not correct the table. A 60 Hz field matters if a motor or a clock cares about frequency. The MINGHAOXIN 2000 W table, the FLAMEZUM table and both larger Giandel tables do not print a frequency at all. Missing is not the same as 50 Hz. Renogy’s three UK models do print 50 Hz. They also print 230 V on the table while the 1000 W title says 240 V. Treat a clash as unresolved. Warranty lines also disagree: Renogy bullets say 2 years and the table says 1 year, MINGHAOXIN states 60 days, and VeftBltrem’s warranty field says no.

Common questions

Is “sine wave” on the title the same as pure sine?
No. Pure sine and modified sine are different specification lines. In this set, VeftBltrem is modified sine at 900 W continuous in the bullets, while the title says 2000 W and does not say modified. The other eleven listings print pure sine. Read that line before you compare watts or price.
Do I size the inverter from peak watts or continuous watts?
Size from continuous watts, then allow about 50–100% above the appliance’s running watts. That headroom is 12 Volt Planet’s rule of thumb. Peak is a short surge. A microwave’s input can sit far above the cooking watts on the door: one 700 W oven in their note drew about 1,150 W.
How many watts can a cigarette-lighter socket supply?
A 10 A lighter socket is on the order of 100 W of AC after inverter losses. That is why BESTEK reviews say a 300 W lighter-plug rating can blow the vehicle fuse. Sniper Automotive’s 150 W figure is for 15–20 A circuits, not for that 10 A case. A larger label needs battery cables and a fuse.
When do I need 24 V instead of 12 V?
You need 24 V when the inverter’s input line says 24 V. Fit4Less is the only 24 V unit here. At 24 V the battery current for the same AC watts is about half the 12 V figure. A 12 V listing does not become 24 V because you have joined two batteries without checking the manual.
How much battery current does 1,000 W need at 12 V?
About 93 A per 1,000 W of AC output, if you assume about 90% efficiency at 12 V. That is a planning rule, not a measurement of these units. On the same rule, 2,000 W is about 185 A and 3,000 W is about 280 A. The cable and the fuse have to match that current.
Does a CE or UKCA line mean the unit meets BS 7671?
No. CE, ETL and UKCA on these listings are marks the seller printed. They do not mean the way you connect the inverter meets BS 7671, and they do not replace the waveform, watt, voltage and cable checks. A high star line is separate again: Fit4Less has one rating and no review text, and the Giandel 4000 W, FLAMEZUM and JIGUUN lines mix other models.
