Motorhome 3000W inverter

Updated: October 2026

You want the kettle or the microwave in a motorhome while you are off hook-up, and a 3000W inverter looks like the missing piece. It can be large enough for that appliance for a few minutes. It does not turn a leisure battery into a kitchen, and it does not turn a 10A or 16A pitch into 3000W. This page stays with the van: what the watts are for, what the battery must deliver, where the box can live, and how hook-up gets people into a loop. The [3000W power inverter comparison](/hub/electrical-equipment/3000w-power-inverter) is the product table. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What 3000W is for in a van

In a motorhome, 3000W is a short high-current burst. A mains kettle near 3000W is the job people actually buy this size for. Many leisure batteries will sag or disconnect before the energy sum looks worrying. Leaving a 3000W inverter on all night so a fridge can sip is how a 200Ah bank gets eaten by the inverter rather than by the fridge. Switch it off between the kettle and the next real job.

The battery, not the inverter, sets the limit

A & N Caravan Services put a 3000W inverter at up to about 290A. Our arithmetic at 90 percent efficiency is about 280A at 12V and about 140A at 24V. The battery, or its BMS, has to be allowed to deliver that current. A 100Ah battery can hold the watt-hours of a three-minute boil and still refuse the amps. Lithium is not a legal requirement. Victron's own guidance band for a 12/3000 inverter is 400–1200Ah, a warning against a single 100Ah battery with a 3000W title on the inverter. If the current is the problem, 24V halves it. Match the inverter to the bank you built, which is also the first check in the 3000W inverter buying guide.

Where it can live

Give it air. Several listings only start their fans above about 45°C, and a kickboard with the vents against a carpet will cook a unit that was merely warm on the bench. A long DC run so the inverter can live next to the kettle is the expensive mistake. The remote lets the heavy case sit close to the battery. Do not mount it in a gas locker. The crimps, the fuse at the battery and the order of negative then positive are the how to connect a 3000W inverter page. If the AC output is tied into the motorhome's existing 230V system or the shore inlet, stop. Own sockets on the inverter are the part you can keep in your own hands.

Hook-up and the charger loop

Site hook-up is often 10A or 16A. Fitting an inverter does not raise it. A 10A pitch is nearer 2300W, and a 16A pitch is about one kettle. On hook-up you usually want the mains, not the battery, feeding the kettle. A battery charger fed from the inverter, which is fed from the battery the charger is trying to fill, goes nowhere and heats both boxes. The Renogy listing states a mains-priority path in 50 ms. That is useful in a van only if the shore inlet is wired as that inverter's manual describes, and only if you still switch the inverter off when you are not using AC.

Common questions

Will a 3000W inverter run the microwave and the kettle?
One at a time, maybe, if each appliance's input is inside the continuous rating and the battery can hold the current for those minutes. Together they are another inverter size. Microwave input watts are often higher than the cooking figure on the door. EDECOA reviews include loads that stopped well below 3000W, so the title is not the demonstration.
What leisure battery do I need?
One that may discharge at roughly 250–290A if you are on 12V and you truly want 3000W. A single 100Ah battery can show enough watt-hours for a three-minute boil and still be unable to deliver the current. Victron's 12/3000 band of 400–1200Ah is guidance from one maker, not a minimum for every van. Lead-acid is more limited than a lithium bank specified at a high C-rate.
Is lithium required?
No. Lithium is the usual way to get a stated high current from a compact bank. You still need enough parallel capacity that the BMS allows the amps, and a 1C rule of thumb means more than one 100Ah battery for a 12V 3000W inverter. An AGM bank can run lighter loads. It is a grudging kettle battery.
Can I mount it under a seat?
Only if the vents stay clear and the DC cables stay short. Fans that start near 45°C need the air the manual assumes. A cushion over the grille is how a unit that passed a light test overheats on the first kettle. A remote lets you put the weight near the battery instead of under the seat you sit on.
What about the gas locker?
Do not put the inverter in the gas locker. You would be adding switching, heat and a possible spark to a space meant for gas. Mount it in a ventilated locker that is not the gas space, close to the battery, and keep the AC on the inverter's own sockets unless an electrician is tying it into the van.
Does hook-up change anything?
The pitch stays at whatever the site gives you, often 10A or 16A, whether or not an inverter is fitted. Use shore power for the kettle when you have it. Do not feed a charger from the inverter that is running off the battery being charged. A mains-priority inverter only helps if that changeover is installed as designed, not if you add a loose plug.
