SDS drill buying guide

Updated: 2026-10-23

You are comparing six amazon.co.uk SDS drills from £47.17 to £84.99, and the numbers that jump out are watts, a chuck size and the stars. The hole in brick or a concrete lintel depends on quieter figures: impact energy in joules, a concrete diameter the listing actually prints, and a weight you can hold. This SDS drill buying guide sets that order for the six tools on our [hammer drill SDS plus comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/hammer-drill-sds-plus). Products Compared read those listings on 22 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are buying

An SDS-Plus rotary hammer takes a 10 mm grooved shank. The bit slides while a piston strikes it. If you are still deciding, use SDS vs combi drill before this table. Holes past about 26–30 mm, or breaking out a slab, are beyond this set.

Joules, then the hole in concrete

Read impact energy before the wattage. UK guides put light fixing tools around 1.5 J to 2.2 J and heavier SDS-Plus work from about 2.5 J towards 5 J. A joule figure compares across brands only when both name the method, commonly EPTA Procedure 05. The DongCheng DZC05-26B states 2.8 J at £47.17 and no concrete diameter. The DCZC22 states 2.1 J at £79.99, also with no concrete diameter. Only the Enventor, at £84.99, states both 6 J and 32 mm, and it does not say EPTA. Bosch, Draper and Stanew leave joules blank on Amazon. Bosch's UK page for 06033A9370 states 1.7 J and 20 mm in concrete. That figure is not the Amazon cell.

Weight, modes and the clutch

Listed weights run from the Bosch at 2.2 kg and the DongCheng corded at 2.9 kg up to the Enventor at 7.87 kg. Heavier item weights may include the case. The Draper states a rotation stop, so a chisel can sit still. Four-mode bullets often add only a chisel angle. A safety clutch slips when the bit jams. It is not an electronic cut-out. Only the Stanew title names one.

What to ignore on the Amazon table

Chuck size here is often 10 mm or 13 mm. The DongCheng corded row prints 1 inch for wood, metal and the chuck. That is not the hole in the wall. The Stanew lists a conversion mandrel. The Bosch and the Enventor do not. The Draper table prints 14 A beside 900 W, 4,100 rpm and 10 × 10 × 10 mm. A 10 mm cube cannot be the drill, and 900 W on 230 V mains is about 4 A, not 14 A. Leave those cells out. A 4.6 from 1,683 reviews is a wider sample than a 4.6 from 32. Neither number is a joule.

A shortlist you can take to the comparison

Take one blank cell you refuse to accept, then open the main table. Printed joules at the lowest price: DongCheng corded, £47.17, 2.8 J, no concrete diameter and no case. Lightest body and largest sample: Bosch, £59.94, 2.2 kg, 4.6 from 1,683 reviews, no joules on Amazon. Named clutch: only the Stanew at £54.99, on 32 reviews, with neither joules nor voltage. 32 mm in concrete in writing: only the Enventor, at £84.99 and 7.87 kg. Job-shaped names are on best SDS drill UK.

Common questions

How many joules do I need for brick and for concrete?
UK guides put light fixing work around 1.5 J to 2.2 J and a useful home SDS-Plus range nearer 2 J to 3 J, with heavier Plus tools up towards 5 J. In this set only the DongCheng corded (2.8 J), the Dong Cheng kit (2.1 J) and the Enventor (6 J, not labelled EPTA) print a joule figure on Amazon.
Is SDS-Max worth it in a house?
For ordinary plug holes, no. SDS-Max uses a larger shank, about 18 mm, and the bits do not interchange with SDS-Plus. Move up, or hire, when holes are regularly past about 26–30 mm or you are breaking out a slab. None of the six drills here is an SDS-Max tool.
Why does the chuck size say 13 mm or 1 inch?
The SDS-Plus shank is a 10 mm grooved system. A 13 mm or 1 inch cell on these listings is often a copied chuck or steel figure, not the masonry hole. Use a sentence that says concrete. Only the Enventor states one here, at 32 mm. The DongCheng's 1 inch wood, metal and chuck cells are not that sentence.
Do I need a safety clutch?
You need one named if a jam is part of the job you are planning, and you should know it only slips the drive. It does not switch the tool off the way an electronic kickback cut-out does. Only the Stanew title in this set names a safety clutch. A side handle, which most of these listings do name, is still how you hold the twist. Do not infer a clutch from the handle.
What if the listing never prints a concrete capacity?
Leave the cell empty. Do not copy 32 mm from the Enventor, and do not copy 20 mm from Bosch's DIY page onto the Amazon row. Four of these six listings do not state a concrete diameter. You can still buy one for plug holes that reviewers describe, but you cannot claim a maximum hole the page never printed. Watts and the star rating do not fill that gap.
