Plastic dust sheets for painting

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to paint or sand in a room you still live in, and the carpet is the thing you do not want to replace. Plastic dust sheets for painting will keep a splash off a sofa. They are a poor floor once you start walking, because the film is slippery and the paint sits on top until a tear lets it through. The only painter's pack in our [construction film comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/construction-film) is the ZHXGO set of six sheets. Peter F. compared the amazon.co.uk listings with trade sheets that print a micrometre figure. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a painter's plastic sheet actually is

A decorator's polythene sheet is a very thin film, and the honest listings say so. Silverline's 12 ft by 9 ft dust sheet is stated at 7 micrometres. ProDec examples sit at 12 and 15 micrometres. A Point One 3 m by 4 m sheet states 28 micrometres at £13.99, still far below 125 micrometres, about 500-gauge temporary builders' polythene. Heavy duty on a decorating pack does not move you up that scale. Hinrichs prints 7 mils on a pack of 945 g for eight 4 m by 5 m sheets, which cannot be 7 mils of solid film. Prefer micrometres. If the sheet might cover rubble or go under a floor, use the builders' polythene sheeting page.

The six-sheet pack in this comparison

ZHXGO, at £7.85, is the painter's pack in this set. You get six sheets of 4 m by 5 m and three tapes. The listing states no thickness. The pack weighs 770 g, over a claimed 120 m² plus the tape, so the film can only be very thin. It is not a measured 7 micrometres. Treat the thickness as unknown. The rating is 3.8 from six reviews. One verified UK review says the film was frail and that paint reached the carpet. Tape lets you stick an edge down. It does not stop the film tearing under a shoe. Zhiyu666 states 0.3 mm on 6 m² with no tape. SuQurtom is 12 m² with no thickness and no tape. One United Kingdom buyer used it as a dust sheet and said it was holding up.

Floors, stairs, and furniture

Plain polythene belongs on furniture and on a floor you will not traffic. Drape the sofa and the units, overlap the covers, and tape the edges so a drip stays on the plastic. BuildWiz's guide makes the same split: plain film for furniture, and a poly-backed cotton sheet when you have to walk. Paint sits on polythene until you tread it through a split. The edges want tape because polythene tears. For a floor you will cross, use poly-backed cotton. It is not one of these listings. Do not use plain polythene on stairs. It slides, and a tear at the nose of a tread is a bad place to discover that.

What this page will not size

This page will not size a sheet over a rubble pile, and it will not say what to put under a concrete floor. A 7 micrometre dust sheet and a 300 micrometre damp-proof membrane share a polymer name and nothing else about the job. If the plastic might have to resist ground moisture, the film in this painter's pack is the wrong object. A paint-covered sheet is a single-job cover. Folding dried emulsion cracks the film. Bin it with the non-recyclable waste your council expects for dirty plastic.

When to use the plastic

Use a thin plastic sheet on furniture and on a floor you will leave alone, tape the edges, and throw it away once paint has dried on it. If you will walk the floor, or if the job is a stair, use a poly-backed cotton dust sheet instead. If the sheet might cover rubble or sit under a floor, leave this page. Those jobs need a gauge, and this painter's pack does not state one.

Common questions

Will a plastic sheet stop paint reaching the carpet?
It will, for as long as the film stays whole and the edges stay taped. Paint sits on polythene rather than soaking through a sound sheet. A tear, or a foot that grinds a puddle through a thin spot, puts the paint on the carpet. One verified UK review of the ZHXGO pack describes that failure. Tape the edges, keep traffic off the film, and treat a split as the end of the protection.
What should I put on a floor I have to walk on?
Use a poly-backed cotton dust sheet, not plain polythene. BuildWiz points painters that way because plastic slides and holds paint on the surface until it tears. Expect to pay about £12 to £17. The ProDec Contractor sheet was £16.39 for 12 ft by 9 ft, and it is not one of these listings. ZHXGO tape is for edges and furniture. It does not make a floor you can work from.
Can I use the same sheet on stairs?
Do not use plain polythene on stairs. It is slippery, and a tear at a tread is difficult to recover from while you are standing on it. The nosing concentrates the slip, and tape does not remove it. Keep the plastic for furniture on the landing.
Does included tape solve slip?
No. The three tapes in the ZHXGO pack let you stick the sheet to the floor edge and to itself at a join. That stops a drip running off an untaped corner. Your shoe still meets a smooth plastic surface, and paint still sits on top of it. Tape is an edge tool. For a floor you will cross all day, change the sheet, not the number of tape rolls.
Can I reuse a paint-covered film?
A clean offcut that has not been walked on can cover another piece of furniture in the same job. A sheet with dried paint on it is finished. Folding it cracks the film and drops flakes. Bag the dirty film with the non-recyclable waste your council expects, and open a fresh sheet for the next space.
