Tool kit for a first home

Updated: October 2026

You have the keys to a first flat, a student house or a caravan. A tool kit for a first home fails when the largest piece count still has no hammer. The household cases are the 24-piece bamboo M29001, the 24-piece aluminium M29024, the 87-piece M29084 and the 176-piece M29086. Start from the tools the listing names. Prices are on the [Mannesmann tool box comparison](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box). Arrival checks are on [how to use a Mannesmann tool set](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box/sub/mannesmann-tool-box-how-to-use). The socket fork is on [socket set or tool kit](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box/sub/mannesmann-tool-box-socket-set-or-general-kit). Listings were read on 19 October 2026, with Which? and HSE GS38.

What a first-home case needs to show you

Which? says a basic kit, around £35 to £60, should include a hammer, an adjustable spanner, a saw, screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys and a tape measure, and it had not tested the examples. That list is a checklist. The only listing that names its contents one by one is the M29001 at about £41.98: a voltage tester, precision and carburettor screwdrivers, Phillips and slotted screwdrivers, an Allen key, an adjustable wrench, a tape measure, combination pliers, a locksmith’s hammer and water-pump pliers. A saw is not in that sentence. The M29084 at about £48.00 names a hammer, pliers and a spirit level, and the included line adds a screwdriver and a spanner. The title says 87 pieces and a bullet says 86 accessories. The M29024 at about £54.45 names none of its 24 tools. The M29086 at about £69.98 names a 3/8 inch ratchet, an adjustable spanner, pliers and drill bits, and does not name a hammer in that highlight. A named hammer beats a larger number.

Bamboo, aluminium or plastic

The M29001 is a bamboo case. The M29024 is aluminium, one compartment, and not water resistant. The M29086 is plastic, two compartments, also not water resistant, and review notes say the tools are not always retained. The M29084 is a two-layer plastic case at 3.8 kg. The 87 cm field is not the case length. No listing claims a lock. Bamboo at about £41.98 buys the printed list, on 4.1 from 49 ratings. Aluminium at about £54.45 buys a metal shell you identify from the photos. Plastic at about £48.00 buys the Green Line case, and a title that says CrV while the material field says carbon steel. If the printed list covers the first month, take the M29001. If you want the larger sample and a spirit level, take the M29084 and check both layers.

The voltage tester and the FSC title

The M29001 is the only case with a voltage tester. HSE GS38 allows a single-pole detector to identify live equipment. It does not prove a circuit dead. A dark neon is not a reason to disconnect a ceiling rose. If the circuit must be proved dead, stop and get an electrician. The letters FSC in the M29001 title are not a certification. The file has no licence code. Say the case is bamboo. Hinge-screw complaints on this model appear in German reviews only, so they are not the experience behind the 49 amazon.co.uk ratings. If your own hinge arrives loose, photograph it. The M29084 and the M29086 print a 10-year line, and the Remscheid page does not name the United Kingdom.

When to add a socket set later

A first home does not start with the M98430. That 215-piece set at about £111.76 states 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch drives, and it does not give you the hammer a flat needs in week one. The M29166 at about £24.45 is cheaper, and its highlight stops at electronics, a bicycle and car interior work. It does not state the drive square. Buy either later, when a hex bolt is the job. The M29086’s 3/8 inch ratchet and drill bits are a later add-on if you already own a drill. At about £69.98 it costs more than the M29084 when the hammer was the missing tool.

Common questions

Is 24 pieces enough?
It is enough when the M29001’s printed list matches the flat. It is not enough if you needed a saw or a socket range, because the number does not smuggle them in. The M29024 is also 24 pieces and names none of them, so the same count is weaker until you can see the tools in the photographs.
Bamboo case or aluminium case?
The bamboo M29001 is 32 × 29 × 7.5 cm, 3.74 kg and about £41.98, with a printed list and 49 ratings. The aluminium M29024 is 33.5 × 26.5 × 6.5 cm, 2.8 kg and about £54.45, not water resistant, and silent on which tools are inside. Choose bamboo when the list matters. Choose aluminium when the photos have already shown you the tools and you want the lighter shell.
Is the bamboo case FSC-certified?
The title includes FSC. No licence code is in the file, and a word in a title is not an FSC label. Describe it as a bamboo case. Do not tell a landlord or a caravan site that the case is certified.
Can I keep it in a caravan?
One UK review of the M29084 mentions a caravan, which shows a buyer used it there, not that the case was built as a locker. The M29024 and the M29086 say they are not water resistant, and no listing claims a lock. A dry cupboard is in scope. A wet locker is not what those pages promise.
Is the voltage tester safe for changing a light?
The tester in the M29001 can identify live equipment, which is the GS38 limit. It cannot prove a circuit dead before you disconnect a ceiling rose. A dark neon is not a safe-isolation result. For a light you must prove dead, use a two-pole test or an electrician. Unplugging a bedside lamp does not need the tester.
