Mannesmann tool box buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are comparing a Mannesmann tool box on amazon.co.uk, and the results mix a 24-piece household case with a 215-piece socket set. A Mannesmann tool box buying guide splits those families before a piece count or a 4.6 means anything. The [Mannesmann tool box comparison](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box) holds the six prices. The order is the job, the case, the drives on the title, the steel line as printed, where a 10-year claim applies, then the price inside one family. Which model belongs to which job is on [socket set or tool kit](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box/sub/mannesmann-tool-box-socket-set-or-general-kit). A first flat stays on [tool kit for a first home](/hub/workshop/mannesmann-tool-box/sub/mannesmann-tool-box-household-kit). Listings were read on 19 October 2026, not in a lab.

Household case or socket set

The first cut is the job. A household case holds a hammer, pliers and screwdrivers for furniture, a bicycle, a flat or a caravan: the M29084, the M29086, the M29001 and the M29024. A socket set is for hex fasteners. The M29166 highlight stops at electronics, a bicycle and car interior work. The M98430 title states 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch drives. None of the six is a daily trade kit, and none of the titles includes a torque wrench. Stars do not travel across that cut. The M29084 is 4.6 from 6,511 ratings and the M98430 is 4.6 from 10,712. The M29166 is 4.5 from 45,806 ratings at about £24.45. If you need a hammer, leave the socket stars alone.

What the case and the steel line actually say

Reviews praise the steel and complain about clips and tools that spill. The M29086 is a solid plastic case, 37.8 × 28 × 12.6 cm, two compartments, and not water resistant. Review notes say it does not always keep the tools seated. The M29024 is aluminium, 33.5 × 26.5 × 6.5 cm, one compartment, also not water resistant, and it names none of the 24 tools. The M29001 is bamboo, 32 × 29 × 7.5 cm and 3.74 kg, and it names its contents, including a voltage tester. No kept listing claims a lock. The M29166 and the M98430 say chrome vanadium. The M29084 title says CrV and the material field says carbon steel. The M29086 title says CRV and the material field says plastic, which describes the case. No hardness figure is printed. The title says 87 pieces and a bullet says 86 accessories. Do not treat the 87 cm length field as the length of the case.

The 10-year line and your UK contract

A 10-year line on a listing is not the Remscheid guarantee page. That page names the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It does not name the United Kingdom. On the M29084 the line appears in the warranty description, a bullet and the EU spare-part field. The M29086 also prints 10 years. On the M29166 the wording sits in the German bullets, while the spare-part field says 1 year. The M29024 spare-part field says 1 year. The M29001 prints none. Read the field on the ASIN you are buying. Your contract with the seller is the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22: 30 days to reject faulty goods, starting the day after delivery. Great Britain’s baseline is the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Northern Ireland follows EU Regulation 2023/988 from 13 December 2024.

Prices on 19 October 2026

Price comes last, inside the family you have already chosen. On 19 October 2026 the M29166 is about £24.45. The household band is the M29001 at about £41.98, the M29084 at about £48.00, the M29024 at about £54.45 and the M29086 at about £69.98. The M98430 is about £111.76. Which? puts a basic unnamed kit around £35 to £60 and says it had not tested the examples. About £48.00 buys the M29084’s named hammer, pliers and spirit level. About £41.98 buys the M29001’s printed list. The 215-piece price buys sockets.

Common questions

Is a Mannesmann set made in Germany?
Where these listings print a country of origin, they say China. The Remscheid address on the guarantee page is the company’s address, not a made-in-Germany line for the M29084, the M98430 or the other four ASINs. Use the origin field on the amazon.co.uk page you are buying.
Does GS mean it won a UK test?
No. GS, and VPA/GS where a title uses that form, is a voluntary German safety mark. BAuA describes a prototype and production check, not performance, lifespan, CE or UKCA. Which? has not published a test of these model numbers. A GS logo on the M29084, the M29086 or the M29024 is not a UK winner’s badge.
Should I buy the set with the most pieces?
Piece count is a weak guide, because bits inflate it and full inventories are rare. The M29086’s 176 pieces are not automatically more useful than the M29084’s hammer, pliers and spirit level. The M98430’s 215 pieces are sockets, not a household kit. Count the full-size tools the listing names.
Which model is a household case and which is a socket set?
The household cases are the M29001, the M29024, the M29084 and the M29086. The socket cases are the M29166 and the M98430. Only the M98430’s title states 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch drives. The M29086 highlight states a 3/8 inch ratchet, which is one drive inside a household case, not three.
Why does the M98430 say 376 g when reviews call it heavy?
The item-weight field says 376 g. UK reviews call the set heavy and describe a case with hinged holders, which the specification block does not name. Keep both statements. Do not use 376 g to decide whether the set will sit in a caravan locker or come up a flight of stairs.
