How to use a rechargeable spotlight on a wall or floor

Updated: October 2026

You have a small head in the hallway, or a compact flood on the garage floor, and the first evening is when the remote does nothing or the pad lifts the paint. How to use a rechargeable spotlight is a charge you can see, a mount you can undo, and a clear point where you stop. Which model to buy stays on the [LED battery spotlight comparison](/hub/workshop/led-battery-spotlight). The Products Compared editorial team used the listing notes and UK safety sources with the shelf lines dated 15 October 2026. We did not write a manual that replaces the paper in your box. Charge it where you can see it

Use a hard surface you walk past. If the head gets hot, swollen, or starts to smell, unplug it and leave it off. The current limit is the paper in that box. A Uni-Com manual, a different product, specifies 5 V up to 2 A. A Unilite manual warns against a faster charger. The K&F Concept listing instead claims PD 3.0 at 30 W. Do not put 30 W into a head whose instructions say 5 V. GOODEA, EZVALO, Bonsery, and the K&F torch are the USB listings. Helcona is not: reviews say 3× AAA, not in the box. If a port does nothing, stop. That is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a reason to open the cell.

Fix it so it can come off

A stick-on head does not need an electrician. Opening a lighting circuit does. A magnet needs steel, or the plate in the box. GOODEA includes a magnet. Bonsery includes adhesive pads for paint. EZVALO lists screws, tape, and an iron plate. Helcona is tape. K&F Concept uses 1/4-inch threads and weighs 1.01 kg, so a picture-rail pad is the wrong fixing. Adhesive on fresh emulsion can lift the paint. Fit the pad, leave it, then hang the head. The head has to come down to charge. Beizkna claims a magnet, and at least one review said it was missing.

Aim it, then try the remote

Point the beam at the object, not into glass. A reflection off the glaze hides the print. A work flood should sit above and beside your hands so you are not in your own shadow. An infrared remote needs a line of sight. On the Bonsery, one review says a physical switch must be on as well. Helcona's timers matter because reviews say AAA cells die if the light stays on for hours. Only Beizkna claims IP65, and that is jets, not a soak. The accent heads and the K&F torch are not water resistant. Buying criteria are on the battery spotlight buying guide.

When to stop

Stop if the pack is hot, swollen, or will not charge. Do not open a sealed cell. If water has been in the bay, do not switch the lamp on. Call a qualified person if you are opening a mains circuit, if you need a lamp for a flammable atmosphere, or if work equipment needs an inspection you are not trained to do. HSE guidance on handlamps is about choosing and checking a work lamp. It is not a certificate for these ASINs. The garage-or-frame choice is work light versus picture spotlight.

Common questions

Can I leave it on charge overnight?
No. Electrical Safety First says not to charge overnight or while you are out, and to unplug when charging has finished. Charge where you can see the lamp, and take it off the lead when it is done. That applies to these USB heads in the same way it applies to a phone on the same socket.
Which charger should I use?
Use the limit in the box for that model. Other UK spotlight manuals cap USB charging around 5 V and 2 A and warn against a faster charger. The K&F listing claims PD 3.0 at 30 W, which applies to that torch only if the paper agrees. Do not put 30 W into a head whose sheet says 5 V. Helcona takes AAA cells, not a USB charge.
How do I fix it to a wall that is not metal?
Use the adhesive metal pad or the screws, not the magnet alone. Bonsery includes pads for non-magnetic surfaces. EZVALO includes tape, an iron plate, and screws. Press the pad onto sound paint and let it hold before you hang the head. If the paint is new or flaking, screws are the safer fixing. The head still needs to come off for charging.
Why does the remote do nothing?
Infrared needs a clear path to the receiver, and the remote may have its own flat cell. On Bonsery, a review says the physical switch has to be on as well. A GOODEA review reports pairing trouble on a multi-pack. Point the remote at the front of the head before you assume the lamp has failed. If the button on the head also does nothing, check the charge, then the returns route.
When do I stop and not repair the pack?
Stop when the cell is swollen, hot, wet, or will not charge. Do not replace a sealed lithium cell at home. Return the lamp or take a damaged pack to a recycling point that accepts it. A stick-on battery head does not need an electrician. Call one if the work is a mains lighting circuit, not because the remote missed the sensor.
