How to use a solder fume extractor

Updated: 2026-10-21

The fan is on, the joint is still smoking into your face, and you are not sure whether the hood is too far away or the filter is already full. How to use a solder fume extractor is mostly placement and a filter you change before the airflow dies. You should know where the intake sits, what a remaining smell does not prove, and when to stop. Peter F. used HSE guidance and the failure notes already stored for this set. This is not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Which class to buy is on the [fume extractor comparison](/hub/workshop/fume-extractor). This page does not rank the units.

Put the intake in the plume

HSE INDG248 tells you to keep your face out of the fume, and to use extraction for rosin flux and for other fluxes you use for more than a few minutes a day. SR20 says keep the capture hood close to the soldering point, and keep the iron rest inside the capture zone. The plume rises off the tip. A grille beside your elbow is stirring the room. A clip that holds the board 20 cm back from the grille has already lost the capture the listing claimed. The WEP suction line is 10 cm. Preciva UK reviews talk about 4–6 inches. If the board has to sit further away, you need a hose, not a louder pad. That split is on the solder fume extractor buying guide.

Draughts and distance undo the fan

A window, a door or a desk fan will steal the plume before the extractor sees it. SR20 names draughts from doors and windows as a reason capture fails. Close that airflow while you solder, or move the hood upwind of the joint. A higher speed does not repair a plume that is already travelling sideways. Pad fans in UK reviews only work when the work stays close. A collapsed hose, which UK notes record on the AOYUE, has the same result as a hood that is too far away: the fan runs and the joint is not in the airstream. Straighten the hose, keep the mouth over the tip, and watch the smoke. When a pad is the wrong class is on the fume extractor for soldering page.

Pre-filter, particle filter, carbon

Three media do three jobs, and washing the wrong one ruins it. A pre-filter catches the coarse dust that would load the next stage. The FumeClear boxes in this set include spare pre-filters. Change it when it looks grey, or when airflow drops and the hose is straight, before you blame the motor. A HEPA element, where the listing names one, is the particle stage. H12 on the FC-2001S and H13 on the KINGSOM K7, the FC-100A and the FC-2001X are seller claims, not a measurement we made. Do not wash a HEPA element and do not blow it out. None of the H13 listings here tell you to wash that stage.

When the unit is not extracting

Weak suction after a week is usually a loaded pad, a full pre-filter, or a hose that has split or collapsed. Treedix notes describe airflow that drops once the pad is fitted. Fit a fresh pad before you decide the motor is tired. On the FumeClear hose units, UK reviews describe a plastic tube that cracked within months and glue that let go after a day. A split tube starves the hood. Do not leave tape on that tube for a season. Stop and unplug if the case is metal and the wiring matches the Nordswal review: a failed grommet, poor crimps, and a switched neutral. That is an electrical fault. Call a competent person if staff are exposed, if soldering is the job, if you wheeze on soldering days, or if the process is welding or PVC. A hobby fan is not a local exhaust sign-off.

Common questions

Where do I put the hood?
Put the mouth or the grille in the rising plume, close to the joint, with your face outside that plume. Keep the iron rest inside the same zone, which is the SR20 point. On a pad fan that means the board stays near the listing’s short distance, about 10 cm on the WEP or about 5–6 inches on the KOTTO. On a hose, move the mouth, not your chair.
How close is close enough?
Close enough that you can see the smoke enter the inlet, using the distance your own listing prints. This set does not support one centimetre for every fan. If the plume still misses, move the hood closer or kill the draught. A stronger speed setting does not collect a plume that has already gone sideways.
What if I still smell flux?
Smell means something is still reaching you. It can be a hood that is missing the joint, spent carbon, or a split hose. It does not prove the air is clear when the smell fades, because the nose adapts and because a carbon pad is not a HEPA test. Recheck the position, then the pre-filter or the pad.
When do I change the pre-filter, the HEPA and the carbon?
Change the pre-filter when it is visibly loaded or the airflow has fallen and the hose is straight. Do not wash a HEPA element. Change carbon when odour control has gone and the position is already correct. These listings do not state a month count. A 12-month main-filter interval is trade guidance, not a figure printed on these ASINs.
Can I wash a HEPA filter?
No. Washing or blowing out a HEPA element can open a path through the media. None of the H13 listings here tell you to wash that stage. A coarse pre-filter is the part you replace often. Follow the sheet in your own box if it says a particular foam pad can be cleaned, and do not extend that sentence to the HEPA element.
Why is suction weak after a week?
Look for a loaded carbon pad, a full pre-filter, or a kinked, collapsed or split hose before you replace the fan. The AOYUE notes include a hose that collapses. The FumeClear notes include a tube that cracks. A new pad or a pre-filter is the first fix. A motor fault is what remains after the airway is clear.
