Solder fume extractor buying guide

Updated: 2026-10-21

The flux smell is still in the spare room when you open the door. A solder fume extractor buying guide has to sort that before the stars, because amazon.co.uk uses one word for three different machines. You need to know whether you want a carbon-pad fan, a filtered hose, or a duct to outside, and why 220 V is not a UK plug. Prices in this captured set run from about £31 to £319.99. Peter F. used the stored amazon.co.uk listings and public HSE guidance, and did not lab-test these units. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The shelf table is on the [fume extractor comparison](/hub/workshop/fume-extractor).

Three machines share one search

The search results mix a carbon-pad fan, a filtered hose unit and an unfiltered blower. They are not interchangeable. A carbon-pad fan in this set sits around £31 to £40. The WEP 948DQ-I, Preciva, KOTTO, Treedix and the cordless SainSmart CSE01 all return air through carbon. They do not seal to a laser enclosure, and none of them names an H12 or H13 class. A filtered hose is the next shape. The KINGSOM K7 at £119.99 and the FC-100A at £319.99 name H13. The FumeClear FC-2001S at £149 names H12, with 128–168 m³/h claimed. The FC-2001X at £229 is written for a small laser, not an iron. The third machine is the Nordswal 12 inch blower at £179. It claims 3,600 m³/h and a 10 m duct, and it lists no filter. One UK review alleges poor crimps and a switched neutral on a metal case. Treat it as a ventilation fan, not as a solder filter. How those rows compare on the bench is on the best solder fume extractor page.

Filter the air or send it outside

HSE's solderers page says bench-mounted boxes are of limited use unless they are fitted with a HEPA filter. SR20 says if the air comes back into the room, the unit needs a HEPA stage and a replacement programme. A thin carbon foam can take some odour. It is not that stack. Loss of smell is not a clearance test, because the nose tires, and particles are not gases. Ducting is the other option in the HSE sheet: discharge to a safe place outside. A pad fan with a vague fit-a-pipe line, such as the Treedix, is not a certified outdoor kit. The Nordswal has the duct and none of the media, so it only helps if the outlet is actually outside and the wiring is sound. Flux limits for the iron are on the fume extractor for soldering page.

Voltage is not a plug

UK mains are 230 V, and a domestic plug is BS 1363, the rectangular three-pin Type G. Only the WEP 948DQ-I states 220–240 V, 50 Hz, and a Type G plug, and it says not to connect the unit to 110 V. That is the plug check this batch can pass on the listing text. A 220 V line on the AOYUE, the FC-2001S and the FC2001A does not say the pins are British. A Schuko or Euro lead is a UK buying problem, not something you fix with tape. Open the technical table and the photos of the plug before you order. Laser enclosures need a sealed hose rather than this plug debate.

Home bench or a workplace

EH40/2005 lists rosin-based solder flux fume as a sensitiser, with an 8-hour limit of 0.05 mg/m³ and a 15-minute limit of 0.15 mg/m³. Those are workplace exposure limits, not a hobby badge you tick because a listing says CE or 99.97 percent. Employers who use local exhaust ventilation need a thorough examination at least every 14 months. A Sunday pedal repair is not that test. Occasional joints can use a close carbon fan, and the WEP is the one here that states a UK plug. Regular repair work in a small room is the hose unit with a named HEPA class. Staff on a bench, welding, or PVC on a laser is where you stop and get a competent person.

Common questions

What should I check before I compare models?
Check the contaminant, then where the air goes, then the plug. Hand soldering is not a laser enclosure, and a carbon pad is not an H13 hose. In this set the pad fans are about £31 to £40, the named HEPA hose units start at £119.99, and the only stated Type G plug is the WEP 948DQ-I at £38.99. Stars do not show the filter class.
Is a carbon-pad fan the same as a HEPA extractor?
No. KOTTO, WEP, Preciva, Treedix and the SainSmart CSE01 describe carbon and do not name a HEPA class. HSE says bench boxes that return air to the room are of limited use unless they have HEPA. A carbon pad can pull the visible plume off your face at short range. It is not the recirculating stack in SR20.
Does 220 V mean a UK 13 A plug?
No. A 220 V or 220–240 V line is the supply voltage. A UK 13 A plug is BS 1363, Type G. Only the WEP states that plug. KOTTO UK reviews report a Euro plug. If the technical table is silent, do not assume the pins will fit a British socket.
Can I duct fumes outside instead of filtering?
Yes, if the duct discharges to a safe place outside. That is the alternative SR20 allows beside recirculation through HEPA. The Nordswal has a 10 m duct and no filter, so it does not clean the air it moves. A one-line fit-a-pipe claim on a pad fan is not a certified outdoor kit.
Does COSHH apply in a home workshop?
COSHH binds employers. A hobby bench is not the 14-month LEV test. The exposure limits for rosin flux fume still describe the hazard: 0.05 mg/m³ over 8 hours and 0.15 mg/m³ over 15 minutes, and it is a sensitiser. If you solder as a job, or other people are exposed, get a competent assessment rather than a hobby listing.
Are any of these units for welding?
No. Welding fume is a separate HSE topic, and none of these ASINs is a welding extractor. The Nordswal is an unfiltered blower. The pad fans and hose units are sold for solder smoke, and the FC-2001X title is a small laser. Do not use a solder carbon pad on a weld.
