Laser engraver fume extractor

Updated: 2026-10-21

You have a desktop diode laser in a small enclosure, the first cut on plywood fills the lid with smoke, and a solder fan on the bench is the wrong shape for the port at the back. A laser engraver fume extractor has to hold that smoke in the box and pull it through a sealed hose, into a filter or to a safe discharge outside. This page says what the £229 listing limits, why a high cubic-metre blower is not a filter, and where the shortlist stops. Prices are stored amazon.co.uk figures. Peter F. did not test enclosures. The smoke has to be contained first

An open grille does not seal to an enclosure. The KOTTO, WEP, Preciva, Treedix and SainSmart CSE01 are carbon-pad fans for an iron held a few centimetres from the pad. They have no enclosure port. Smoke that leaks around a lid never meets the media. Containment comes before filter class. A sealed hose from the enclosure port to the extractor is the shape that matches a small laser. The lid joint, the clamp and the port diameter matter more than the star rating. HSE RR1146, a 3D-printer study and not a laser test, found an enclosure, extraction and about 20 minutes of clearance cut measured emissions. Real-room harm was not settled. If your machine has no enclosure, a hose unit cannot invent one. An open diode with a carbon fan beside it copies the solder setup onto the wrong job. Hood placement, once you have a hose, is on the how to use a solder fume extractor page.

What the FC-2001X listing covers

The only listing in this set written for a small laser is the FumeClear FC-2001X at £229. The title limits it to diode lasers up to 15 W and fibre lasers up to 5 W. It names a pre-filter, H13 and carbon, a 60 mm hose, three levels and a claimed 2.2 kPa. The supply is 24 V DC, and a mains plug is not stated. The listing has no customer-review line. An unreviewed spec is not evidence that the hose fits your lid. The FumeClear FC-100A at £319.99 names laser engraving among its uses, with H13, carbon and 200–260 m³/h claimed. Voltage and plug are not stated. That airflow claim is still a listing claim. It does not prove the hose seals your cabinet. Inside the stated wattage you are choosing an unreviewed 24 V unit at £229, or a heavier mains unit at £319.99 whose laser line is a bullet rather than a wattage limit.

A blower is not a filter

The Nordswal 12 inch blower at £179 claims 3,600 m³/h and a 10 m duct. No filter stage is listed. Moving smoke is not filtering it. If the duct discharges to a safe place outside, you have ventilation. If it dumps into a hallway, a loft, or the same room, you have relocated the smoke. The volume claim does not replace H13 and carbon. A HEPA and carbon stack, sealed to the enclosure, is the option when you cannot duct outdoors.Acrylic and wood smoke are particles and vapours, and the nose is a poor meter. A carbon-pad solder fan does not become acceptable for that smoke because the window is open. Flux distance stays on the fume extractor for soldering page.

Where this shortlist stops

PVC is the hard stop. Laser processing of PVC can release hydrogen chloride and other hazardous substances. A university laser-safety note, which is not a statute, is enough to say you do not cut PVC and then rely on a hobby carbon pad. The wattage lines are listing limits. The FC-2001X title stops at 15 W diode and 5 W fibre, and a larger CO₂ cabinet sits outside that sentence. Where other people are exposed, most workplace local exhaust needs a thorough examination at least every 14 months.

Common questions

Can I use a solder smoke absorber on a laser?
No. The KOTTO, WEP, Preciva, Treedix and SainSmart are open carbon-pad fans. They do not seal to an enclosure port, and they do not name HEPA. Laser smoke has to be held in the box and pulled out through a hose. A solder fan beside an open diode copies the wrong shape.
What does the FC-2001X listing actually limit?
The title says diode lasers up to 15 W and fibre lasers up to 5 W. It states a 60 mm hose, H13 and carbon, 24 V DC and a claimed 2.2 kPa, at £229. There is no review line in the file, and a mains plug is not stated. It does not say the hose fits every enclosure.
Does a higher m³/h blower replace a filter?
No. The Nordswal claims 3,600 m³/h and lists no filter. It can move air along a 10 m duct if the outlet is a safe place outside. It does not filter laser smoke, and one UK review alleges unsafe mains wiring. Cubic metres are not a substitute for media.
What hose size does this batch state?
The FC-2001X states 60 mm. That is a product line, not a UK legal minimum, and not a 4 inch rule borrowed from a US forum. If your port is a different size, you need a seal that does not leak. The FC-100A lists a duct hose and does not, in this file, give you a second diameter to treat as a standard.
Do I need to vent outside a flat?
You need the smoke either discharged to a safe place outside or passed through a real particle-and-carbon stage and kept inside a sealed enclosure. A duct into a stairwell is not outside. A carbon-pad fan in the room is not that stage. Flats often cannot take a DIY hole through a wall, which is why a sealed particle-and-carbon stack exists, inside the wattage the listing states, and not for PVC.
Is acrylic or wood smoke just smell?
No. It is smoke from a hot process, particles and vapours, and smell is a poor test of whether it has been captured. RR1146, which studied 3D printers rather than lasers, still treated enclosure and a particulate filter as the control idea. Do not cut and then sniff the room to decide the filter worked.
