Ultrasonic cleaner carburettor

Updated: October 2026

You have a motorcycle or small-engine carburettor on the bench, and a spray can has already failed on the jets. An ultrasonic cleaner carburettor job is a water-based bath that scrubs passages a brush cannot see, if the fluid names aluminium and petrol stays out of the tank. A 10 litre squat bath is a size people buy for one body, not a promise that every body fits the basket. Prices are on the [10L ultrasonic cleaner comparison](/hub/workshop/10l-ultrasonic-cleaner). Products Compared used UK fluid labels and the listing fields in this set, not a teardown. Fill and degas are on [how to use an ultrasonic cleaner](/hub/workshop/10l-ultrasonic-cleaner/sub/10l-ultrasonic-cleaner-how-to-use).

Whether the carburettor fits

The litre badge does not measure the basket. On both DK SONIC listings the basket is about 272 × 205 × 87 mm, inside a tank near 300 × 240 × 150 mm. A compact motorcycle carburettor often lies in that footprint. A wide float bowl, or two carbs still joined, will not. Stand the body over the basket before you mix fluid. If it rocks on the rim, it does not go in. A long narrow 10 litre, around 505 × 135 mm on some specialist pages, is a worse match for a wide body. The SDKEHUI listings state 10 litres and name a basket without those millimetres. The heater at about £124.99 includes a wire basket and a ball basket. The ball basket is for small loose pieces, not a carb body. The digital at about £129.50 names a stainless basket and nothing about the opening. Measure on arrival, and accept a return if the body will not sit flat. Zhikang at about £120.99 states neither litres nor a basket, so it is not a carburettor pick here. UK texts on the SDKEHUI heater say motorcycle carburettors came clean. That file is 3.8 from 16 reviews, and more than one of 10 UK texts says the unit did not start or blew a fuse. The DK-1000HP-IE at about £209.99 is the listing that prints the tank and the basket you can check, with 240 W ultrasonic and a 300 W heater kept apart. Its 4.3 from 152 is not a clean sample, as the best 10L ultrasonic cleaner UK page explains. Fit is a tape measure. Reliability is a separate gamble.

Fluid and temperature

The bath provides cavitation. The fluid has to dissolve fuel gum and tolerate aluminium and brass at a stated temperature. Tap water and washing-up liquid wet the outside. They do not do the jet work these fluids are sold for. None of the five listings includes a carburettor fluid. You buy the bottle and you follow that label, not the heater’s maximum. The UK labels do not agree, so none of them is a universal 70 °C. Allendale’s Ultrocarb is mixed 1:10 with deionised water, stated up to 50 °C, with aluminium and brass named. Shesto’s sheet is also 1:10, with a bath at 50 to 80 °C, a rinse, a small-area test first, and aluminium named. DK Sonic’s carburettor fluid sits in that 50 to 80 °C band. Best Ultrasonic’s low-energy fluid is stated at 15 to 40 °C, and the maker says not to exceed 55 °C or the micro-emulsion can split. If your bottle is the low-energy one, a dial that reaches 80 °C can spoil the mix. Set the heater to the label you poured, and let the bath reach that temperature before the body goes in. If a test piece dulls or pits, stop and change fluid rather than extending the time. A knob without a calibrated display is a guide. Stay with the cooler fluids when you are unsure. Heater watts are not extra scrub.

What to take off first

Rubber diaphragms, O-rings, and gaskets come off. They swell in a degreaser that is fine on aluminium, and a perished diaphragm will not idle after you have cleaned the jets. Electrical parts, including a sensor or a solenoid you can unplug, stay on the bench. A metal body with brass jets is the load. Ultrasonics will not cut a new orifice in a damaged jet. They can only clear a blockage. Take the float and needle out so a passage is not masked. Keep jets in a basket, not loose on the tank floor. Durston, Ultrawave, and Branson all forbid parts on the floor. A heavy body feels stable in the bottom of a 10 litre tank, and that is the usual mistake. It belongs in the wire basket, with fluid above it and a gap underneath. If an 87 mm basket is too shallow, lay the body on its side rather than jamming it against the steel. Do not expect the bath to strip intact paint. The sources here do not claim that, and a long hot cycle can mark alloy you meant to keep. Brush external grime off first so the fluid is spent on the jets. Kemet’s note is the follow-on: a rinse after the ultrasonic cycle, not one bath asked to wash and rinse at once. When the body is down to metal you are willing to wet, degas the fresh mix, then load.

Rinse, dry, and what not to pour in

Petrol and other flammable solvents do not go in the tank. HSE guidance EIS21 says ultrasonics heat a bath, and a warmed solvent should stay at least 15 °C below its flashpoint. A heater that can reach 80 °C is the wrong experiment. Branson rules out alcohol, petrol, and flammable solutions. At home the rule is the same as at work under COSHH: water-based cleaner only, usually 1:10 on these carburettor bottles. Rinse before you refit. Shesto and Kemet both send you to a rinse. Detergent left in a jet will spoil the idle, and you will blame the bath. Dry the passages with gentle compressed air so you do not drive a flake deeper and leave it. Let alloy cool before new O-rings go on. Refitting rubber onto a warm, wet body stresses a new diaphragm from the start. Dump the fluid when it is dark, when a fresh part comes out no cleaner, or when the bottle says so. Do not top up a spent bath with water and call it renewed. Empty only after the machine is unplugged. There is no cycle time in these sources for these ASINs. Judge by a jet you can see through, not by a fixed quarter of an hour. If the body still will not pass fuel after the right fluid, the right temperature, and a rinse, the fault is wear or a passage the basket never wetted. That is a mechanic’s job, not a longer run at 80 °C.

Common questions

Will a carburettor fit a 10 litre squat tank?
Often, not always. The DK SONIC baskets here are about 272 × 205 × 87 mm. A single compact motorcycle carburettor may lie in that space. A wide body or a pair still bolted together may not. The SDKEHUI listings state 10 litres without basket millimetres. Measure the body before you mix fluid.
Can I use tap water and washing-up liquid?
Only for light external dirt. Fuel varnish needs a carburettor fluid labelled for aluminium, often mixed 1:10 with deionised water. Washing-up liquid will not do that job. None of these amazon listings includes the fluid.
What temperature should I set?
The temperature on the bottle. Allendale states up to 50 °C. Shesto and DK Sonic’s carburettor fluid state 50 to 80 °C. Best Ultrasonic’s low-energy fluid states 15 to 40 °C and not above 55 °C. A bath that can reach 80 °C does not make 80 °C correct for every mix.
Do I remove rubber diaphragms and O-rings?
Yes. Take off rubber, gaskets, and anything electrical. The metal body and brass jets are the load. A diaphragm left on can swell in a degreaser that is fine on aluminium, and the carburettor then fails for a new reason.
Is petrol in the tank acceptable?
No. Do not pour petrol or another flammable solvent into a heated ultrasonic bath. HSE EIS21 warns that ultrasonics warm the liquid and that solvent should stay well below its flashpoint. Use a water-based carburettor fluid only.
Do I rinse before refitting, and when is the fluid finished?
Rinse after the cycle, as Shesto and Kemet both say, then dry the passages before new rubber goes on. The fluid is finished when it is dark with oil, when a part comes out no cleaner, or when the bottle says to change it. Do not stretch a spent mix with a top-up of water.
