How to use a gas weed burner

Updated: October 2026

You have a wand or a lance in the shed, the patio joint is green, and the temptation is to burn the weed until it is ash. How to use a gas weed burner, on a UK patio, is a shorter job than that: heat the leaf until it dulls, then move, and do not start at all if the garden is dry. The products themselves are on our [gas weed burner comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-burner-gas). This page is the sequence and the stop rules. The limits below come from UK fire services and the amazon.co.uk reviews in this set, compared on 16 October 2026. A chemical-free claim is not a reason to bring pets out to watch.

Do not light it today if the garden is dry

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, writing on 29 August 2025 and again in its summer advice, says to skip weed burners when the ground and the foliage are dry. Fires have spread to fences, sheds and cars. Keep water ready on a day when you do light one. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service recorded a weed burner fire that spread to a shed and neighbouring gardens on 14 July 2025. That is the picture to hold before you click a piezo: a joint is a small target, and a dry fence is not far away. If the week has been hot and the lawn edge is crisp, put the tool back and use a knife, or wait. A claimed 1300°C or 1800°C does not measure how fast a fence dries. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds’ nests while they are in use. A flame pointed into a hedge, or along a fence bottom that may hold a nest, is the wrong pass even on a damp day. If you are unsure the surface can take heat at all, the weed burner for patio and driveway page separates block joints from tarmac, resin and decking.

Set the fuel before you want a flame

Seat the butane can before you look for a spark. On the wand listings in this set the can is the fuel system. UK reviews on the Green Haven pages describe a seal that leaks or a bottle that falls off, and one of those accounts is a lighter used beside a failed seal. If the can will not stay on, stop. Do not chase it with a flame. A gusty corner wastes the flame, which Onkruidbrander reviews already note. A hose torch is a cylinder job. Calor’s storage advice is that propane stays outdoors and upright. LPG is heavier than air, so a leak pools low. A left-hand POL nut tightens the opposite way from a normal screw. Which valve you own, and why a 37 mbar barbecue regulator starves a torch, is the butane or propane weed burner page. Check a new hose connection with soapy water, not with a match. Bubbles mean you shut the valve and remake the joint. If you cannot shut a leaking cylinder, Calor prints 03457 444 999 on its storage advice for that emergency. That number is for a cylinder leak, not for a butane can, and not a substitute for 999 if something is already burning. Gloria and the one-review kits do not name a regulator in the box. Without the part that matches the valve, you are not ready to light anything.

Wilt the leaf and move on

Garden Organic’s advice on hard surfaces is a brief flame on young weeds, a check for insects in the crack, and a repeat when they return. The Royal Horticultural Society still prefers a knife or a taproot puller when the root is the problem. Hold the flame on the leaf until the surface dulls, then move to the next plant. Ash and a hot slab are a longer pass than this job needs. DIY Garden publishes about 5–10 seconds as its own rule of thumb, not as a time we measured. Wind steals the heat, which Onkruidbrander reviewers mention. If the butane can frosts and the flame shrinks, pause. The cold can is losing pressure. Do not put it on a radiator, and do not decide the wand is broken before the can has recovered. Keep the hose, your feet and any dry grass behind the flame. Aim at the weed in the crack. If the leaf is pale, leave it. The collapse often shows later, and a second pass the same afternoon is how slabs scorch. A dandelion is not finished because the leaf went dark once.

Gas off, then wait

Shut the gas at the can or at the cylinder before you think about where the tool lives. The head stays hot after the flame has gone. Royal Berkshire and Shropshire both say to cool it with the gas off before storage. A metal nozzle that goes into a shed, onto a fleece or against a fence while it is still hot is how a finished job becomes a fire. Set it on bare paving, clear of dry leaves, and wait until you can hold the tube. Propane cylinders stay outdoors and upright. If the piezo will not spark, that is a known pattern on the Onkruidbrander and on both Green Haven ASINs. Reviewers then use a long lighter. If the seal is not sound, stop using that can. If the flame catches the fence or anything beyond the joint, get clear and call 999. A small scorch you can put out with water you already placed is the “water ready” point. A fire that has left the crack is no longer a weeding problem. A weak orange flame on a hose is often the 37 mbar regulator, not a weed that needs more seconds. The fitting check sits on the gas weed burner buying guide.

Common questions

What if the piezo will not spark?
On the Onkruidbrander, UK reviews describe a button that keeps clicking or a spark wire that melts. On the Green Haven wands the piezo is claimed and then described as dying after a few uses. Those buyers light the head with a long lighter. Do that only if the can is seated and not leaking. A Green Haven review links a lighter to a bottle that fell off a failed seal. If the can will not stay on, the spark is no longer the problem.
Can I use it in a hot, dry week?
Leave it. Royal Berkshire’s published advice is to avoid weed burners when the ground and the foliage are dry, because the fire risk runs to fences, sheds and cars. Essex Fire’s shed fire on 14 July 2025 is an example of that spread. Use a knife or wait for a damper day. The tool being new, or the listing claiming a high temperature, does not alter the weather rule.
How do I shut a hose torch off?
Close the cylinder valve, then let the remaining gas in the hose burn down if the torch instructions you actually have say to do that, and keep the head pointed at a clear, non-combustible spot. If you have no instructions, as one Yosoo reviewer reported, shut the cylinder and keep clear until the flame dies and the metal is cool. Do not kink the hose to snuff it. A leak you cannot stop on a cylinder is Calor’s 03457 444 999. A fire that has left the joint is 999.
When is the metal safe to store?
When the head is cool enough to hold, after the gas has been off. Fire services say to cool the burner before it goes away, not merely to watch the flame disappear. Rest it on clear paving, away from leaves, fleece and the shed wall. A cylinder, if you use one, stays outdoors and upright. A wand can go indoors once it is cold and the can is detached, away from a radiator that would heat the canister.
Will one pass kill a dandelion?
Expect the leaf to wilt and the plant to return. A single pass is a check on top growth, which is what these tools do in the reviews and what the horticultural advice allows for young weeds. The taproot is still in the joint. Plan a repeat, or pull it if you want it out. Burning to ash on the same afternoon adds heat to the slab and still may not finish the root.
