Butane or propane weed burner

Updated: October 2026

You already have a Calor bottle for the barbecue, or you are tired of small cans that fade halfway down the patio, and the titles say propane butane as if the gases were interchangeable. A butane or propane weed burner is really a choice of hardware. A wand wants a small canister on the handle. A hose torch wants a high-pressure regulator on the matching cylinder valve. The 37 mbar part that runs a barbecue will not run a torch that wants about 0.5–4 bar. The eight listings are on our [gas weed burner comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-burner-gas). This page is only the fuel and the fitting. The Products Compared editorial team read those amazon.co.uk pages on 16 October 2026. There is no lab test of flame temperature.

Butane cans are the wand fuel

The Onkruidbrander at £14.95 includes four butane canisters, with 4.0 from 7,733 reviews. Both Green Haven listings are butane as well: four cans at £19.99, model DYN13870, 3.8 from 3,256 reviews, and an eight-can title of the same model at £26.99, 3.7 from 812. The titles say electric. The bullets say cans, a piezo and no cable. A can is enough when the job is a short run of joints and you want fuel in the box on day one. It is a poor plan when you expect a cylinder’s endurance. As the can empties or the afternoon is cold, the canister frosts and the pressure falls. Onkruidbrander reviews describe the flame shrinking until you pause. That feels like a broken piezo. Often it is a cold can. Let it recover, and do not sit it on a radiator. A mix can is still a small canister, not a patio-gas cylinder. Some UK shops cite EN 417 for threaded cartridges. These amazon listings do not all print it, so do not copy that mark onto Green Haven. If the can will not seat, stop. Those reviews already include a seal that leaks or a bottle that falls off. When the wand is the right class and you still need to choose length, ignition and who should skip a flame, use the gas weed burner buying guide.

Propane cylinders are the hose fuel

A cylinder earns its place when the drive is long and you are willing to store propane outdoors, upright, which is Calor’s rule. You still buy the gas separately on every hose listing in this set. Gloria at £33.80 claims a 5 m hose and does not name a regulator. Dapetz at £19.79 and Yosoo at £23.26 have UK reviews that deny an easy Calor fit: a missing or incompatible regulator on Dapetz, a nut that misses the bottle on Yosoo. DVDVBOOM at £43.99 and HoldOneLight at £47.24 leave the cylinder out, and one UK review each is not a fitting certificate. HoldOneLight cites CSA, not a UK POL valve. Propane keeps pressure in the cold better than butane. That is a Liquid Gas UK point about vapour, not a test that a propane torch kills a weed faster. The degree lines here are seller claims. A weak orange flame is often low pressure. iGas Direct says to find a leak with soapy water, not with a flame. A barbecue regulator builds that weak flame on purpose. Liquid Gas UK’s sheet puts domestic butane regulators nearer 28–30 mbar. That is still not a torch regulator. If you only have a green leisure cylinder, read the next section before you order a POL kit. Once the gas flows, the surface limits are on the weed burner for patio and driveway page.

Three fittings that are not interchangeable

Standard UK propane cylinders use a POL connection, 5/8 inch, left-hand thread. Flogas describes that as the ordinary propane valve, and the green leisure cylinders as a 27 mm clip-on. They do not cross over. A left-hand thread tightens anti-clockwise, which is why a Dapetz review mentions fittings that screw that way. Soap the joint after you have made it. Bubbles mean you stop and remake it. The third mix-up is the regulator. Liquid Gas UK puts propane appliances at a nominal 37 mbar and torch regulators at a higher pressure. Trade kits are sold around 0.5–4 bar. A DIYnot buyer fitted about 35 mbar, saw a weak orange flame, and found the torch wanted roughly 0.5–4 bar. Four bar is on the order of a hundred times 37 mbar. The barbecue regulator will light something. It will not feed the jet the torch was sized for. A 27 mm patio clip is the leisure-bottle valve. Your green bottle is the wrong valve for a high-pressure POL torch. Change to a POL propane cylinder and a torch regulator, or stay with a butane wand. Sibbons sells a 0.5–4 bar POL regulator, cited to EN 16129, at about £14.95 including VAT. It is not in these ASINs.

Which listing still leaves you to buy the regulator

Every hose row in this comparison leaves a gap you have to close yourself. Gloria’s contents line names the burner and a 5 m hose. This listing, model 000296.6000, does not name a reducer. Do not assume one is in the carton. Dapetz and Yosoo reviews say the supplied connection failed. DVDVBOOM does not list a cylinder. HoldOneLight does not include propane and does not name UK POL. The wands are the other way round. The cans are in the Onkruidbrander and Green Haven offers, and there is no cylinder regulator to forget. You trade that for frosting, a short reach and a piezo that often gives up. Photograph the cylinder valve before you order a hose kit, then check the price and star line on the comparison linked above. POL, a 27 mm clip and a 37 mbar badge are three different answers.

Common questions

Why does the can get cold and the flame die?
A butane canister loses pressure as it chills, which is what Liquid Gas UK describes for butane in the cold, scaled down to a wand. Onkruidbrander reviews describe the flame fading until you pause. Let it warm in the air. A radiator will not fix a can that is icing because you have been running it hard. If the can is warm and the seal is hissing, that is a leak.
Is propane hotter, or just better in the cold?
Propane is the cylinder fuel that holds pressure outdoors and in cold weather. Butane, in the wands’ cans, weakens when it is cold. That is Liquid Gas UK on vapour pressure, not a test that propane kills a weed faster. A weak orange flame on propane is often the wrong regulator, as when a DIYnot buyer fitted about 35 mbar on a torch that wanted roughly 0.5–4 bar.
Will my barbecue regulator run a weed torch?
Expect a weak flame. UK propane appliances sit at a nominal 37 mbar. Torch regulators on UK trade listings sit around 0.5–4 bar. A buyer who fitted about 35 mbar reported a weak orange flame for that reason. Your barbecue regulator can be a perfectly good barbecue part and still be the wrong part on this tool. Look at the pressure printed on it before you blame the nozzle.
Do I need a POL nut or a 27 mm clip?
POL, 5/8 inch left-hand, is the standard UK propane valve Flogas describes. The green leisure cylinder is the 27 mm clip-on. A POL torch regulator will not clip onto that green bottle, and a patio clip regulator is the low-pressure part, not a 2–4 bar torch part. Cans on a wand avoid the valve. A hose torch needs a POL cylinder and a high-pressure regulator these listings mostly omit.
Which way does a left-hand thread turn?
You tighten a left-hand POL nut anti-clockwise and undo it clockwise. A Dapetz review notes fittings that screw anti-clockwise, which matches that pattern, though you should still look at the nut you were sent. Forcing it the other way feels like it is stuck, and it is actually coming loose. After it is seated, soapy water on the joint should show no bubbles. Do not use a flame to hunt for the leak.
What do I buy if I only have a green leisure cylinder?
Stay with a canister wand, or change the cylinder. The green bottle is the 27 mm clip, and a patio clip regulator is the wrong pressure for a torch that wants about 0.5–4 bar. The Onkruidbrander and Green Haven wands take cans and sidestep that valve. You still get a short wand and, in the reviews, a piezo that may not last.
