How to use a cordless angle grinder safely

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a Metabo 18 V body on the bench and a disc still in its sleeve. How to use a cordless angle grinder safely starts before the switch: the pack comes off, the guard stays on, and the rpm on the disc has to be at least the tool’s no-load speed. The [Metabo cordless angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/metabo-cordless-angle-grinder) holds the seven amazon.co.uk prices from 19 October 2026. We compared those listings and public UK sources, and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the disc goes on

Take the pack off before you touch the nut. Restart protection on the W 18 7-125 is not a reason to change the disc while the pack is clicked on. Set aside a disc that is cracked, chipped or dropped. Its maximum rpm has to reach the tool’s no-load speed: 8,500 rpm on the W 18 7-125, 10,000 rpm on the brushless 9-125, and 8,000 rpm maximum on the WVBF. A disc marked 6,500 rpm is too slow for the 7-125. BS EN IEC 62841-2-3 caps peripheral speed at 80 m/s. The 125 mm bodies are M14 and the 76 mm CC is M5, so do not swap the discs.

Guard, handle and both hands

The guard stays on for a cut and for grinding. HSG17 treats a guard in place as part of using the wheel. Every 125 mm box here includes one. Only the cardboard brushless 9-125, order 602374850, calls it tool-free. Point the closed section between you and the disc, then lock it. Fit the side handle on the guarded side, one hand on the rear and one on the handle. Do not remove the guard to reach a fillet. The WVBF is the listing for angles down to 43° and still includes a guard. How it differs is on the flat-head page.

Cutting disc, grinding disc or flap disc

A cutting disc works on its edge. A grinding disc works on its face. A flap disc blends a surface and does not replace a cut. Laying a cutting disc flat side-loads a thin wheel. Do not grind with a cutting disc. The WVBF box includes five 125 mm P60 convex flap discs. Read each rpm mark against that tool’s 8,000 rpm maximum. A wood blade is not a safe default. The CC MetaLoc is the 76 mm compact at 20,000 rpm. Neither compact takes a 125 mm wheel.

What these Metabo listings actually include

Most 125 mm rows use a two-hole nut and a pin spanner. Only the WVBF, order 601308840, lists a Metabo Quick nut and a stop within 1.5 seconds of switching off. On the 7-125 you wait until the disc has stopped. No price here includes a pack, and a metaBOX is a case. What the price leaves out is on the body-only page. Series letters are on the buying guide.

Noise, dust and who must train

HSE sets noise action values at 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A), and a limit of 87 dB(A) at the ear. Typical grinder use in its bulletin is about 90–95 dB(A), which is not a reading from these listings. Hearing protection is the sensible default at home. Wear eye protection to BS EN 166. HSE sheet SR21 covers masonry dust, so grinding block with no extraction is a job to stop. Employers train users under PUWER 1998 regulation 9. A householder is outside that duty. Get help for a 230 mm cut, a weld you cannot see, or a motor that smells burnt.

Common questions

Does the guard stay on an angle grinder?
Yes. Leave it on, with the closed section between you and the disc. HSG17 treats the guard as part of using the wheel, and every 125 mm box in this set includes one. Taking it off does not turn a standard head into the WVBF.
Which side does the side handle go?
Fit it on the guarded side before you start, one hand on the rear and the other on the handle. These 125 mm boxes list a side handle. A 125 mm disc used one-handed lets a kick come back into your wrist. Clamp the work, or a loose offcut will climb the wheel.
How do I know the angle grinder disc is fast enough?
Compare the maximum rpm on the disc with the tool’s no-load speed. The disc has to be at least as fast. The W 18 7-125 is listed at 8,500 rpm and the brushless 9-125 at 10,000 rpm, so a slower mark stays in the sleeve.
Can I grind with a cutting disc?
No. A cutting disc is for the edge, and grinding on its face side-loads a thin wheel until it shatters or the tool kicks. Use a grinding disc on the face, or a flap disc when you are blending.
What is the difference between a two-hole nut and Metabo Quick?
A two-hole nut needs the pin spanner, which is what the 7-125 and the 9-125 orders include. Metabo Quick, and a stop within 1.5 seconds of switching off, are named only on the WVBF 18 LTX BL 15-125 Quick.
Do I need a certificate to use an angle grinder at home?
No named certificate is required at home. PUWER 1998 regulation 9 is an employer duty to train abrasive-wheel users, and HSG17 is the HSE guide. It does not name one card you must hold. You still keep the guard on, match the disc rpm to the tool, and wear eye protection to BS EN 166.
