How to use a Makita angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to fit a disc, or you have just unboxed one of these tools and the first job is a cut. The dangerous moment is usually the wheel change. How to use a Makita angle grinder, from these listings, means isolate the tool you actually have, keep the guard, and match the wheel to the mount the page prints. It is not a buying sort. The [Makita angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/makita-angle-grinder) is the table if you are still choosing. Peter F. followed the saved listings and public UK safety advice on 22 October 2026. These steps are not a lab method.

Isolate the tool you actually have

Take the energy off before you touch the nut, the guard, or the disc. On the Makita 9557HNR/1 the yellow 110 V plug comes out of the supply. The bullets call it a 110 V 3-pin plug. It does not belong in a 13 A socket. Unplug it from the 110 V outlet it is actually on. Why that plug is not a kitchen plug is on 110 V or 18 V. On every cordless row the pack comes off the tool. The DGA454Z is a bare 18 V unit. The Fledukten kit’s 21 V packs still come off before a wheel change.

Guard and both hands

The guard stays on for grinding and cutting. HSG17 is written for work: a trained person mounts the wheel, the machine speed must not exceed the wheel speed, and the guard contains fragments. A dropped disc, a disc that does not sit flat, or a disc marked slower than the tool does not go on. Keep both hands on the tool, and do not fit an attachment that turns the grinder into something else. The 9557HNR/1 names a side grip. The XAG25Z box names a side handle. The DGA454Z table does not list a guard. That blank line is a data gap. If your own box has no guard, you stop.

The mount changes the method

It is the wrong pattern for the XAG25Z. The bullets say that tool takes X-LOCK accessories only, with a snap-on mount and a pull release. You do not hunt for an M14 nut the listing has ruled out. The 9557HNR/1 prints M14 x 2.0. The DGA454Z table prints no thread, and two UK reviews disagree about M14 hole cutters. Neither review is the specification line. The brand field is genuine or compatible.

Wheels you do not fit

Match the wheel’s marked speed to a speed you can read. The DGA454Z and the XAG25Z print 8,500 rpm. The 9557HNR/1 prints 11,000 rpm, and the XAG25Z then only accepts X-LOCK wheels. Both Gautesy listings print 90,000 rpm on the technical line and a few thousand rpm in the bullets. PSA5 says an angle grinder must not be fitted with a toothed saw blade. The laloohome 76 mm kit names a woodworking cutting blade and does not say whether it is toothed. That name is not approval to cut wood. A flap wheel, a thin cutting disc, or a grinding disc, in the diameter and the mount the tool prints, is the class these listings describe.

When you stop

Stop when you cannot see the hazard or you cannot put the guard back. Stop when the instructions are not in a language you can follow. One UK review of the laloohome 76 mm mini says the instructions were not in English and that no goggles were in the box. If the wheel has been dropped, or you are about to remove a guard, get someone competent for that job. A comparison page does not become that person.

Common questions

Do I unplug, or do I take the battery off?
You remove whichever energy source the tool uses, before the wheel change. The 9557HNR/1 is unplugged from its 110 V supply. Every cordless body here loses its pack, including the Fledukten kit whose batteries are 21 V packs rather than Makita packs. A lock-on slide switch does not count as isolation while the plug is still in.
How does X-LOCK change the usual nut method?
On the XAG25Z the bullets say the tool takes X-LOCK accessories only, with a snap-on fit and a pull release. The pin-spanner sequence on generic UK guides is for a threaded nut. If your discs are ordinary threaded discs, they are the wrong stock for this body, even though the box includes one grinding wheel and one cut-off wheel of the X-LOCK type.
What if the listing does not print a spindle?
You do not invent one. The DGA454Z technical table has no thread. Two UK reviews say M14 hole cutters do not fit, and one names a 5/8 inch spindle. Those sentences are a dispute, not a line you can stamp on a purchase order. The 9557HNR/1 is the row that does print M14 x 2.0. If you cannot match the disc, leave it off.
Can I use the woodworking blade in the 76 mm kit?
The laloohome mini names a woodworking cutting blade and does not say whether it is toothed. PSA5 tells you not to fit a toothed saw blade to an angle grinder. A missing tooth description is not a green light. Leave the wood blade out unless you can show it is an abrasive wheel rated for the tool, which this file does not show.
What do I do with the yellow 110 V plug before any cut?
You confirm it is in a 110 V outlet, then you still unplug it before you change the disc. You do not fit a 13 A adapter so the 9557HNR/1 will run from the kitchen. The bullets specify a yellow 110 V 3-pin plug, and the box does not list a transformer. Double insulation does not convert the plug.
